Notre Dame: Sullivan inquiry public in 4-6 weeks

By Brian Hamilton and Stacy St. Clair

Notre Dame has been fined $77,500 for ignoring industry standards that could have prevented the death of Declan Sullivan, a football team videographer who died last year after the hydraulic lift he was using toppled over amid strong winds, the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration announced this morning.

The university released its responses to the IOSHA findings this afternoon, and the leader of the school's investigation into the tragedy indicated that its findings are expected to be made public in four to six weeks.

"The IOSHA findings are very helpful as we begin to conclude our own comprehensive investigation," said John Affleck-Graves, an executive vice president at Notre Dame. "As part of the agency's review process, we will meet with officials in the next 15 days.

By Dave Kaplan

Loyola has fired men's basketball coach Jim Whitesell after seven seasons on the job.

Whitesell's Ramblers went 16-15 this season, but finished just 7-11 in Horizon League play and in 8th place.

He compiled a 109-106 record during his time at Loyola. He previously was the head coach at Elmhurst College and Lewis University and had taken those schools to a combined six NCAA tournaments. However, he never reached postseason play during his tenure with the Ramblers.

Loyola hired Whitesell on April 14, 2004. A 1982 graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, he had been head coach at Lewis University for the previous 12 seasons, compiling a 214-126 (.629) record there.

By Chris Kuc

Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane will be sidelined "upward of three weeks" with a left leg injury, coach Joel Quenneville said Tuesday.

Kane was hurt during the Hawks' 4-2 victory over the Flames on Sunday night when he fell awkwardly into the boards after a check by Calgary's Cory Sarich. Kane appeared to jam his left skate into the boards as he tried to spin away from the check.

"Kane's probably going to be out upward of three weeks," Quenneville said after practice at the United Center. "We're hoping that's the maximum. He's progressing right now."

Sox, Dodgers will use weekend to decide

| 42 Comments | BREAKING STORY

mannyhittingblog.jpgBy Dave van Dyck

Now that the White Sox have been awarded the waiver claim on Manny Ramirez, according to several sources, they have until Tuesday to work out a deal with the Dodgers, who may have a clearer indication by then of whether they are in or out of playoff contention.

Nothing will happen over the weekend, according to one source familiar with the proceedings, allowing both sides to assess where they are and exactly what they need. The Dodgers, who are five games out of the National League wild card race and play the Rockies this weekend, have the choice of making a deal or pulling Ramirez off waivers and keeping his $4 million-plus salary for the rest of the season.

White Sox general manager Kenny Williams refused to talk specifics about whether he had claimed Ramirez, but did say "it will be an interesting weekend, in more ways than one."

NBC tabs Mayock as Notre Dame game analyst

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By Brian Hamilton

Notre Dame fans tuning into NBC will get their color this fall from Mike Mayock.

The network on Monday tabbed Mayock, who had served as an NFL Network college football and NFL Draft analyst, to fill the game analyst role vacated when Pat Haden left to take the athletic director position at USC.

"As the son of a coach and someone who has been around football my entire life, my favorite part of sports television has always been broadcasting games," Mayock said in a release announcing the hire.

"The fact that I will now provide commentary on one of the most historically important teams in the history of college football on NBC Sports makes me about as happy as I can be as a sports broadcaster."

It's an intriguing hire, as Mayock's name had not been bandied about in speculation as to who would replace Haden, the focus mainly on names such as ex-Irish quarterback Joe Theismann and Charles Davis, an analyst with Fox and the Big Ten Network, among others.

Sox's Peavy to have surgery, miss rest of season

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By Dave van Dyck

White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy said Friday he will undergo surgery next week to repair a detachment of the latissimus dorsi muscle in his back and will miss the rest of the season.

Peavy, who said the surgery would be performed Wednesday at Rush Presbyterian hospital in Chicago, vowed to pitch again.

"I hope to be up and throwing by spring training," Peavy said. "My future is not in jeopardy."

Nothing that few major-league pitchers have sustained this kind of injury, Peavy said,  "It's kind of uncharted territory. ... I guess I'm a guinea pig."

By K.C. Johnson

Vinny Del Negro, dismissed by the Bulls on May 4, will be hired as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, a league source told the Tribune.

Del Negro went 82-82 in two seasons with the Bulls, including back-to-back first-round playoff exits. But disagreements with management, which most spectacularly culminated in a brief physical altercation with senior vice president John Paxson on March 30, aided his exit.

He and Dwane Casey reprised their battle as finalists in 2008 for the Bulls' job, with Del Negro again impressing during the interview process. Del Negro and Casey first interviewed with Clippers management last week and were brought back for second interviews on Tuesday.

It's official: Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager to Thrashers

The other shoe has dropped.

The Blackhawks have traded wingers Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Eager, defenseman Brent Sopel and minor-league prospect Akim Aliu to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for the 24th overall pick in Friday's NHL Entry Draft, along with the 54th pick, veteran center Marty Reasoner, Joey Crabb and prospect Jeremy Morin.

On Thursday, the Hawks sent center Colin Fraser to the Edmonton Oilers for a sixth-round draft pick.

Rumors of trades involving the Hawks have run rampant since they won their first Stanley Cup in 49 years two weeks ago as the team is facing major salary-cap issues.

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a conference call early Thursday that while it was difficult to part with Byfuglien, the team will look in a number of directions to try to replace his hulking presence.

"He's a special player," Bowman said. "There's a few different ways you can make up for the loss of him. He's a great player and we're certainly going to miss him

"I don't think there's one guy who can replicate what Buff did. There's more than one way to approach it. I think we saw a little bit of what Bryan Bickell can do this year in terms of being a big body. We're hoping he can play a bigger role next year.

"We're going to have to have some guys from within to emerge with some bigger roles. A guy like (Tomas) Kopecky. By the end of the playoffs he was playing on the top line. He's a big, strong guy. He's physical and goes to the net."

Release the balloons. Ah, better make that purple and gold confetti.

In a game of two very tired teams, the Lakers exorcised the ghosts of past failures by winning the NBA championship against the Boston Celtics, 83-79.

The Lakers had to rally midway in the fourth period to make it happen and it took some key free throws by Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant to wrap it up. The Celtics were within two with 13 seconds to play. Sasha Vujacic was sent to the line and made both with 11.7 seconds to play, giving the Lakers a four-point lead and the win.

It was Coach Phil Jackson first ever Game 7 in the Finals. He's now 1-0 and will be the recipient of his 11th NBA Championship ring, two more than Boston's signature patriarch Red Auerbach.

The Phillies scored on an unearned run in the third inning when Marlins centerfielder Cameron Maybin misplayed a line drive by Chase Utley, scoring Wilson Valdez.

Halladay struck out 11 Marlins en route to the historic win in front of 25,086 fans at Sun Life Stadium. The Marlins crowd gave Halladay a standing ovation as he walked out to the mound in the bottom of the ninth.

Halladay retired pinch-hitter Ronny Paulino on a ground out to third to end the game.

Scott Skiles reaches out to Vinny Del Negro

By Fred Mitchell

Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles says he has reached out to Vinny Del Negro since he was fired 10 days ago by the Bulls.

"I have communicated with Vinny personally and I'll leave it at that. We have known each other a long time," Skiles told the Tribune on Thursday.

Skiles declined to discuss specifically the performance of Del Negro during his first NBA head coaching stint, which netted an 82-82 record and two postseason appearances. But Skiles, who has a career coaching record of 361-335, (including a 165-172 mark in 4-plus years with the Bulls) did say this about the NBA coaching experience:

"You try to be a student of the game, and you're working hard trying to build your club and all that. Every game you learn stuff, no matter where you're coaching. So many decisions are made during the course of the game ... it's impossible to make them all correct. You have the information and you try to make the best decisions possible. You hope they work out more than they don't. You will always be learning."

One year truly felt like 10 -- much like Green Bay for many years. That's what I was missing in my heart I suppose, a sense of belonging.''

"Very, very bad," manager Ozzie Guillen said."It's a shame. He has to use his speed.

Bears seal deal with Taylor; Peppers next up

Chester Taylor likely will be the Bears' starting running back next season. (Jeff Wheeler/Minneapolis Star Tribune)

By Brad Biggs

Two down. One to go.

The Bears reeled in their second free agent of the day at Halas Hall as running back Chester Taylor agreed to terms Friday on a contract that likely will make him the favorite to be the starter while also weakening the backfield in Minnesota.

Taylor agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract with $7 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. That's not far off the figures of $14 million in total value and $8 million guaranteed that a league source said the veteran back was gunning for last night.

Taylor flew in this morning along with defensive end Julius Peppers, who is expected to reach an agreement with the team at any moment. Tight end Brandon Manumaleuna had a deal in place for a five-year contract with $6 million guaranteed and a total value of more than $17 million before he landed this morning at O'Hare.

Bears land blocking tight end Manumaleuna

| 38 Comments | BREAKING STORY

manumaleuna-horiz.jpgBy Brad Biggs

Greg  Olsen still could play a role in the Mike Martz offense, but so will one of the better blocking tight ends in the league after the Bears agreed to terms on a contract with free agent Brandon Manumaleuna.

Manumaleuna, who began his career in St. Louis playing for Martz, became the first of what could be multiple free-agent acquisitions for the Bears on Friday. Prized defensive end Julius Peppers will visit Halas Hall, as will running back Chester Taylor, and both could be Bears by the end of the day.

Manumaleuna, who at 6-foot-2 and  295 pounds is the size of an offensive lineman, will sign a five-year contract with the Bears later Friday pending a physical. His signing does not spell the end of Olsen's Bears career, however, but it does cast doubt on the status of veteran tight end Desmond  Clark.

"I played for Mike Martz (in St. Louis) and Lovie Smith was the defensive coordinator. It was a great situation," Manumaleuna told the Tribune on Friday morning at O'Hare Airport after arriving on a flight from Los Angeles. "This team has a chance to be real successful. It was difficult (to leave San Diego). I had a lot of friends and it was close to home, but the business is what it is."

Bears haven't hired Ruskell -- yet

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By Dan Pompei

A report that said the Bears have hired Tim Ruskell to be their director of player personnel is not accurate, according to a highly placed source.

Not yet, anyway.

The report might be more premature than outright false. Ruskell likely will be hired, probably in the very near future. It would make sense to have in place before the scouting combine kicks off on Thursday.

The Bears learned in 1999 about the dangers of announcing a hiring before it is official when they thought they had Dave McGinnis in place to be their head coach. Word leaked that McGinnis had been hired--except no deal had been struck. McGinnis was offended with how the situation had been handled, and subsequently backed out.

Ruskell stepped down from his role as president of the Seahawks late last season when it became apparent the team was not intending to bring him back in 2010. He worked with Bears general manager Jerry Angelo for 13 years; the two were the primary architects of the Bucs teams that Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden led to postseason success.

The Bears recently fired pro personnel director Bobby DePaul. If he is hired, Ruskell is expected to oversee the pro department as well as the college department, and the Bears likely will name another pro personnel director to replace DePaul.

Bears will raise ticket prices for 2010 season

| 7 Comments | BREAKING STORY
By Brad Biggs

The economy has not come back yet, but a raise in Bears' ticket prices has returned for 2010.

As expected, the Bears announced a hike in ticket prices in some areas of Soldier Field on Friday, marking the eighth time in the last nine years the franchise has raised prices in some form.

There will be no price increase for approximately 25 percent of the seats, the team said, with those seats being in the 400 level and the west grandstand. Non-club seat increases range from $2 to $17, and club seats will be raised from $10 to $20 per ticket.  The Bears non-club ticket prices now range from $68 to $125 and account for approximately 85 percent of the seating at Soldier Field.

RICHMOND, British Columbia -- Holding his arms high after a huge final lap, Chicago native Shani Davis became the first man to win two gold medals in the 1,000 meter speedskating race, crossing the line in 1:08.94 at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Wednesday night.

Davis was running just fifth after 600 meters but turned on the jets to become the only participant in the race to break 1 minute 9 seconds. Thus Davis reprised his gold medal win from the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

The U.S.'s Chad Hedrick authored a mild surprise with a bronze medal in the race with a time of 1:09.32.

Bulls on the verge of unloading Salmons

| 1 Comment | BREAKING STORY
By K.C. Johnson

NEW YORK -- Bulls management has told John Salmons to remain at the team hotel Wednesday night as it finalizes a trade for the veteran swingman, sources said.

It doesn't appear Salmons will be moving to Houston as part of a Tracy McGrady trade, as the Rockets' demands for multiple draft picks is too high.

Unloading Salmons removes all doubt about him possibly exercising his $5.8 million player option this summer and guarantees that the Bulls will have enough money to offer a maximum contract this summer.

The Bulls have a 6:30 p.m. tipoff against the Knicks, the team they have been vying against in efforts to acquire McGrady.
