Defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert, a third-round pick of the Bears and their top selection in the 2009 draft, told the Tribune he was released Saturday morning.

Gilbert was caught in a numbers game and may have lost out to close friend Henry Melton, a fourth-round pick in 2009 who secured a spot with strong special-teams play and a high motor.
Gilbert, who suffered a neck stinger during the preseason, never really showed much until the last two exhibition games. He had sacks in back-to-back games against the Cardinals and Browns, but it wasn't enough to save his job.

Gilbert played in just four games as a rookie, was inactive for 11 games and did not play in another.

The Bears apparently will release both of their third-round picks from the '09 draft with receiver Juaquin Iglesias expected to be let go, too.

If you remember, Gilbert was the YouTube sensation that was filmed jumping out a poll right before the draft.

I have a feeling some of these guys will need a good Austin Divorce Attorney... Good thing I know of one.

The Bears will need to invest in a better scouting department. Angelo was adequate on defense and woeful on offense. His philosophy at looking at a player's "floor" did not work out at all. Ultimately he gave up on drafting and just went with trades. He lost confidence in himself. He drafted Vanderbilt guys because he felt the school preselected mature, smart guys who he could not himself evaluate. The team will likely try the proven method of taking guys from big schools who have played their position for a long time and have a history of being relatively injury free. The days of taking athletic guys from small schools who have little experience at their positions and little experience against big time opposition is over. Jumping out of swimming pools just doesn't count.

Who is the Bears backup center to the 70-year-old Kreutz?? It's clear that the Jerry-Lovie strategy this year is to hope Rodgers gets hurt, Favre falls and breaks his hip, Cutler miraculously stays healthy and we sneak into the playoffs at 9-7.

Alright guys enough is enough..stop telling me everyone is a loyal chicago bears fan when the chicago bears organization isn't loyal to their fans..Every other owner in the nfl would love to take over the bears and turn them around. 2nd largest market next to new york and we have ONE NFL team! what a disgrace I hope the bears suck this year and I hope Virginia dies and sells the team to someone else. Mark Cuban couldn't get the cubs well i hope damn sure he can purchase this $800 million dollar team and turn it around into a billion. Our only hope lays on the death bed of the McCaskeys

If this was a franchise run by owners who want to win-it-all instead of a family business so that everyone has a place to work, I could look forward to an organization that would hire Bill Parcells as GM and Bill Cowher as Head Coach.

But we fans know that something like that wouldn't have happened in the 80's and 90's, much less in the mild Depression of Obama. Two guys like that would be too much money to spread around - not to mention player salaries. Instead, Bears fans in 2011 (in the likely event the NFL won't play in 2010) will be subject to head scratching hires for GM and Head Coach (hopefully by another group of "Head Hunters", right?).

For 2010 I am very pessimistic - I predict 3-5 wins. But will that be enough for the McCaskeys to uproot this front office/coaching staff collection? More importantly, would it be enough (enough EMPTY SEATS, that is) for them to sell to an owner with the desire and ability to lead the Bears to WINNING SUPER BOWLS!?!

Enough of this hour's rant...The projected roster cuts are just more reason NOT TO TRUST this organization to hire the right people or to either draft or develop talent!!!

When the time comes and Virginia McCaskey passes. Michael McCaskey will step forward and start running the organization again. The team will go from bad to worse. Chicago could easily support a 2nd NFL team. Does the Leaugue understand the relationship between Bears fans and Michael McCaskey ?

The bottom line is the bear need to stop drafting of pure talent and actucally get player who have production

dear virgina mccasky:

I am an attorney; real bears fan and I can spot talent. next time you want to hire on the cheap, hire me. I can do better than these bozos who have wasted your money and pissed off and pissed on the city of chicago. and p.s., please sell the team on your death bed to someone not named Mccasky. Pappa Bear would want it that way because hes the biggest bears fan of all.

dan bunzine, okwo, michael haynes, rex grossman, cedric benson, mark bradley, marc columbo, chris williams, daniel "I dont have a position but i got a girl's name" manning. the only "success" is tommie harris and devin hester? excuse me. I got to go take a dump

Winning football teams need constant infusion of new talent from draft and free agency. Simply put, Angelo can't pick them and Lovie can't develop them. THEY BOTH NEED TO GO ASAP!

Hey Zman -

You're an idiot. Don't go defending that horse's ass Angelo by noting some later round picks that have made it while ingoring the fact that his early round choices have busted. A team's success is based on hitting on the high choices, not 4th and 5th rounders. And for Angelo, that's the case of a blind squirrel finding an acorn. And I know that Hester was a 2nd round pick. Angelo had no idea he was such a great kick returner, and Hester hasn't been worth his money as a wide receiver.

And there is no one in the NFL who would give Angelo or Smith a job. This team will continue to stink as long as Angelo and Smith are there, and as long as Ted Phillips is the president and old lady McCaskey owns the team. This team will not be a winning team until we get a new owner.

Hey Zman, Just because fans offer their criticism and freely express their displeasure with the Bears coaching & managment does not mean they are any less fans than you. Besides, it neither Lovie nor Angelo took the Bears to the Super Bowl; it was Ron Rivera's defense that took them there. Their offense still left a lot to be desired, and the Bears didn't match up to a better Colts team.

Angelo must go..Lovie can only influence what players he wants...and Angelo has had more busts than studs... He has passed up players that have produced on other teams...and drafted no-name small school players that never got on the field...sounds like Angelo must go...Go Bears!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable. Bears trade out of the second (passing on people like CB Sean Smith) and flop in the third. I think the Bears are now worse at drafting than the Raiders.

I love it. It's becoming an annual event to have Jerry draft people in the 2nd and 3rd rounds only to have them redshirt a year and then be cut. I cant wait for Lovie and Jerry to be fired, Cause there is no way in he!! we are better than the packers and vikings and making the playoffs. I only wish we could get a new owner at the end of the year too

Give the guy a break!!! Seriously!!! Some of you need to break out of you shell and check out the draft issues some other teams face. Don't discredit some of the great moves by Angelo as well, Briggs, Hester, and Knox just to name a few. Also, consider the free agent moves they have made over the past couple of years. Angelo and Smith took the Bears to the Super Bowl!!! I'm pretty sure there are quite a few teams who would take what Angelo and Smith have brough to the organization. I'm also sick and tired of watching our fans boo our own guys...as if that will help them play any better!!!

We were talking about the Bears yesterday and I was trying to remember the name of the Bears coach back when the sucked?

Kevin Bumstead on September 4, 2010 1:02 PM

OMG, OMG, OMG. This CAN'T be true. You don't waive a guy who can jump out of a pool!! That's the sure sign of a stud. He got sacks in two preseason games. That's got to count for something, Jerry and Lovie! This is HORRIBLE!!!! Angelo is the greatest GM to ever grace the NFL. His brilliance is sometimes just too much to try to contemplate. I'll just have to have faith in him. I hope he has a great labor day holiday.

"1, 2, 5!" ... "3, sir!" ... "3!!!" on September 4, 2010 12:46 PM

Can ANYONE actually believe this to be a surprise?!! I mean, didn't we just experience this 2 years ago with Bauzuin and Okwo?!!

Here is more evidence that the McCaskey regime gets what they pay for --- you buy cheap, you get cheap --- and rightly so!!

If it wasn't the McCaskey's as owners, I might think the Bears franchise might have a chance. But as long as they own this team, fans will have another 5-8 year cycle of another bad front office and coaching staff before the monotony repeats again!

jerry angelo, the village idiot, keeps his record alive...
you rule when it comes to "a bad draft" jerr....
consistency is your game ....

except for jknox ... you hit 'the gold' there jerr.

but sorry jerr-a, 1 out of 7 ....

way below the mendoza line,

"Losing out on 3rd rd. picks, along with some of the recent failures of many other high level picks, really makes you start to question the ability of whoever is making the call on these selections, Jerry Angelo i presume."

No, his draft record over the past 6-7 years makes you start to question. Recent horrible drafts only validate his incompetence. The Bears are completely inept in drafting quality players.

What a waste. I can't wait for Angelo to go. This is embarrassing.

Losing out on 3rd rd. picks, along with some of the recent failures of many other high level picks, really makes you start to question the ability of whoever is making the call on these selections, Jerry Angelo i presume. I understand there's risk, and it's sometimes difficult to figure out which college players will end up being quality pro players; however, the Bears are missing on far too many players. I can't speak for other clubs in the NFL, but i'd have to believe the Bears have fared as poorly as about any other team there is, barring the Lions perhaps.

Maybe he can go get one of those big-paying jobs jumping out of pools I've been hearing about.
