Lefty Ted Lilly is reportedly the latest Dodger to be put on waivers, according to a FOX Sports report.

The move can only be viewed as part of a larger plan by general manager Ned Colletti of protecting against owing money to players with expiring contracts should Los Angeles fade further from the playoff race before a Tuesday deadline to set post-season rosters.

Teams will have until Tuesday to put in a claim for the 12-year veteran, after which time the Dodgers will have a small window to try and work out a potential trade.
The 34-year-old Lilly is 8-8 this season with a 3.27 earned run average in 23 starts split between the Dodgers and Cubs. He was acquired from the Cubs at the trade deadline along with infielder Ryan Theriot in exchange for infielder Blake DeWitt and a pair of minor league pitching prospects.
Since coming to LA, Lilly is undefeated at 5-0 and owns a crisp 1.83 ERA in five starts.

Sorry, boys, but every player gets placed on waivers in August.

Ironically, Manny R was put on waivers the year the Red Sox finally broke through and won their first WS in almost 100 years.
Manny didn't get moved and eventually went on to be WS MVP.

Rod, do you have any idea how many players get placed on waivers at this point of the season? Most don't make that much news...the point of the Dodgers putting him on waivers is the same with Manny. If they decide they aren't going to get to the post-season and he isn't in their plans for next year, why not see if someone is willing to give something up for a guy who is throwing some phenominal baseball? Plus, just like the Cubs, if he wants to come back and re-sign the next year it works out even better. I have a pretty good feeling that he's coming back here next year.

Dear Dodgers,

Thanks for Blake DeWitt and a pair of minor league pitching prospects. DeWitt might be the lead off man the Cubs been seeking.

5-0 1.83 ERA. Not the type of record which you would think would get a player placed on the waiver wire. You'd think the Dodgers would be working on trying to get Lilly signed to another 2-3 yr. contract. Of course, if Lilly was still in Chicago, Hendry would be offering him a 5 yr., no trade contract. If people don't think a GM can make a difference, look at the Reds. Ever since they got the Cardinals ex GM, they've become a solid ball club. And they're not paying out the 3rd highest payroll in baseball either.
