Notre Dame close to adding Texas to schedule

Notre Dame lately has not shied away from filling its football schedules with marquee names.

The latest example? The Irish are planning to mess with Texas.

Notre Dame and the Big 12 powerhouse Longhorns are "very close" to finalizing a four-game series for future games, sources told the Tribune.

The series could begin in 2015, sources said. The rest of the details are unknown, such as if it would be simply a pair of home-and-homes or involve games at off-campus venues.

But it would be another recent statement that Notre Dame remains in the business of big names and big venues on its schedule. The Irish also have firmed up plans to rekindle their rivalry with Miami in a 2012 game at Soldier Field.

The Irish and Longhorns have met 10 times before -- three times in the Cotton Bowl between 1969 and 1977 -- but have not played each other since 1996. Notre Dame owns an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series.

Maintaining that lead would be quite the challenge against the current incarnation of Texas football, as the Longhorns have won 10 games for nine straight seasons and snared a national title in 2005. They're ranked No. 5 in the 2010 preseason coaches poll.

But there's no shortage of history to the matchup: Entering 2010, only Michigan (877) has won more college football games than Texas (845) and Notre Dame (837).

Longhorn fan here: I can says this we betters starts gettins some goods teams to plays, or nds goonas showz us an azzes wippin.

ND can't get through their current schedule without at least 5-6 losses and they think it's a good idea to add another guaranteed lose.

This is a great move by ND. The future ND schedules include teams like Miami, Oklahoma, BYU, now Texas. Already feature UM, PITT and U$C.

Texas certainly has a great football program but 2 in the next 4? There is an awful lot of parity in College Football so Zombie please don't make it sound like Texas' National Championships are as probable as a coin flip. It took a last second touchdown with Vince, indeed a great team/player, but let's get real here. I don't think I'm really going out on a limb by disagreeing with you. But the series would definitely be great for college football.

i wish ND would play one game a year in soldier field.

Whenever I pick up my newspaper and read that the University of Georgia is seeking future opponents and then read the same about Notre Dame, I wonder why these guys don't pick up a phone and talk. A series between Notre Dame and Georgia would be a wonderful experience for both schools. They have played once before...in the Sugar Bowl for Georgia's only National Championship. As a Notre Dame grad and a Georgia resident, I have been to many games at both schools and can say that a Georgia-Notre Dame series would be a great series and a first class football experience. Both Notre Dame and Georgia owe it to their fans to stop digging for easy opponents and schedule a great new rivalry!

nice catch brandon. it is not out yet, publicly.

Horns are 5 with an unproven QB. These are good times here in Texas. We will get 2 in the next 4, should have had one last year, would have had 2 under Vince if he stayed...

Texas is football. Bring it on TD jesus (hey, when you come to austin you will pronounce that "hey-sue-ss" not "geez-us" ok)

When was the coaches poll released? I can't find it anywhere.
