Tinoisamoa vs. Roach spices position battles

BOURBONNAIS -- Bears veteran Pisa Tinoisamoa simply flashed a Colgate smile when asked about the competition with Nick Roach for the starting strongside linebacker spot.

"I think there's just a respect for each other," Tinoisamoa said after reporting to training camp Wednesday. "It was weird because I didn't know anything about Nick Roach, and I don't think he knew anything about me last year.

"Then we watched each other out there. And we were just like, 'To the best man.'  It could be quite a battle."
It might be the most intriguing competition to watch as the Bears hold their first training camp practice Friday afternoon. Roach finished the offseason running with the starters while Tinoisamoa was limited somewhat while still recovering from last year's season-ending knee injury.

Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs openly lobbied for Tinoisamoa as the starter, while team leader Brian Urlacher constantly has raved about Tinoisamoa's playmaking ability. But both Briggs and Urlacher have praised Roach, too.

Health might be the deciding factor. The knee still appears to be a minor issue for Tinoisamoa, while Roach has had hamstring and concussion issues in the past.

"I haven't really sat down with the training staff and figured that part out,'' Tinoisamoa said. "I'm trying to win the job, so you can't really take any days off. Not this time. It's too close to the season."

Others battles worth watching include Mark Anderson and Israel Idonije at defensive end, Danieal Manning and Major Wright at safety, Josh Beekman, Lance Louis, and Johan Asiata at left guard, and Garrett Wolfe, Kahlil Bell, and Harvey Unga for the third running back spot.

love me so me pisa but he has got to stay healthy.. he sounds like hes not sure about his knee eiether but glad that there are two players worthy of playing well...

I think this battel would have been a lot spicier with Jamar Williams in the mix and it sounds like we might have gotten Harris back just by waiting for his release.
Good luck Jamar but I hope you don't go to Carolina and become all pro!

It sounds like Garza is also going to have to earn his spot at RG this season. He was our most consistent lineman last year, but that is another case of tallest midget if you ask me. I think they want the young guards to get a shot this year, so they can start re-making the line for the future. Kreutz is done after this year, and Garza I believe is done in 2011 with his deal. We need an infusion of new talent, and Williams/Omiyale is not enough.

My hope is that Wootton shows up big in camp this year, and gets put into the rotation at DE. If that is the case, we have 3 guys that can play on both sides, and have very good size in Idonije, Peppers, and Wootton, and Anderson can also play both sides (and is not exactly tiny at 6'4"). Idonije can then move inside in passing situations. We have no idea whether Melton or Gilbert are going to be anything for us, so we are going to have to lean on guys like Izzy to pull double duty again.

I am very interested in watching the secondary as well, to see how the depth chart shakes out. I worry about our athleticism at all 4 spots, as Tillman has never been a speedster, and Harris is not exactly fleet of foot. We will need the pass rush to cover for that group's weaknesses, but we need to get the smartest guys on the field back there to protect against the big plays.
