Rod Marinelli goes over a formation with the Bears' defense during minicamp. (Nam Y. Huh/AP)

A former eight-year veteran on the offensive line for the Bears, Tom Thayer will be dialed into the rebuilding offensive line in training camp that is being constructed by new line coach Mike Tice.
That's just one of the storylines Thayer will be following as he prepares to enter his 14th season in the booth as the Bears' radio analyst. This is the 10th season he will be paired with play-by-play voice Jeff Joniak.
Thayer weighed in on issues facing the entire team. Today, in part two of the series, he tackles five questions pertaining to the defense and special teams:
Rod Marinelli will be the third defensive coordinator in three years for the Bears. Do you believe we will see noticeable differences with him at the controls?
"I don't think there are going to be huge differences. It's still going to be a Tampa cover-two. There is going to be a variation of defensive backs. A lot like seeing how the offense can take advantage of the defenses they are playing and finding an area to attack, you are going to have to do the same thing with the Bears defense. How in the first couple weeks of the season do offenses go out and determine the importance of stopping Julius Peppers, to securing Brian Urlacher to attacking downfield? Scheme-wise, there is not going to be a big, huge change. Obviously, Brian and Pisa (Tinoisamoa) staying healthy would be a huge key. Tommie Harris has had great OTA sessions and has looked as good as he has in quite a while, but I still have concerns about Mark Anderson and the DB's. Those are going to be my two areas of concern. Yeah, you're still going to go out and use the cover-two scheme and a variation of coverages, but there are still some personnel groupings that I have concern about. It's not Rod Marinelli. Those guys are as smart about defensive football as you are going to find. Again, there are some personnel that I have concerns about."

Marinelli's biggest challenge will be to get production out of the DT position. Nose tackle and 3 technique are both a big source of the weakness of the defense. We are thin and not necessarily talented at DB, but without that control of 3 OL by the 2 DTs, this entire defense does not go.
Tommie Harris, Marcus Harrison, Anthony Adams, Gilbert, Melton, Idonije (still think with Wootton being on board Izzy will end up back inside) all need to play well for us to have a chance.
Peppers will do fine by himself (double digit sacks), but the other end will not get anything done without support from inside. Urlacher, Briggs, and Tinoisamoa/Roach need the DTs to keep the OL off of them so they can make plays and attack the ball. The QB cannot get comfortable stepping up in the pocket, or we expose our secondary to big plays due to our lack of elite speed at the corner and safety spots.
The Bears need DT play to be outstanding this year to not put pressure on the offense to need 30 points a game.
