Smith shakes off 'Win for Lovie' storyline

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Whatever type of "Win one for Lovie" sentiment that might be out there isn't reaching the head coach.

Lovie Smith kicked off his seventh training camp as the coach of the Bears on Thursday with an optimistic look forward to 2010. If some of his players are talking about wanting to succeed to preserve the future of the coach, who is signed through 2011, it isn't fazing Smith.

"We need to win for the Chicago Bears," Smith said. "(The players) want to play their best. That's what we are going to talk about, players playing their best every time they get an opportunity to. Everything else takes care of itself. It's no more than that. You guys are going to talk a lot about that stuff.

"For us, it's been a long time since we've been in the playoffs. We want to play our best football, and I have been in this game a little bit. I think I know what a good football team looks like. This is a good football team. Every week, everything will take care of itself."

The Bears have not qualified for the postseason since 2006, the year they went all the way to the Super Bowl. In fact, they've been a sub-.500 club since with a 23-25 record over the last two seasons. Two victories to close the 2009 season over Minnesota and Detroit stopped a slide where the team had lost eight of 10 games, and Smith views the division victories as a spring board into this season. Along the way, of course, the offensive coaching staff has been completely revamped and the Bears spent in free agency like never before.

The challenge ahead will be finding a way for all of the new parts, including coaches and players, to mesh quickly.

"If you look at the things that are in place right now, I talked about the coaching staff. We feel good about the coaching staff," Smith said. "We've had success before. We know what a Super Bowl football team looks like. So this part of the season, all teams can do is talk about the potential they have for their football team and see if there are any glaring weaknesses. We just don't see that. We see guys in positions with an opportunity to really excel and take a big step forward. Before now it was about getting personnel getting a lot of outside things set. Now, it's down to just the coaches and the players with football and we feel good about that."

Injury report: Smith said all 80 players should begin training camp healthy. Center Olin Kreutz already announced he is fine coming off surgery to repair an Achilles tendon. Tight end Brandon Manumaleuna is also all the way back from arthroscopic knee surgery.

Uniform report: The Bears will hold their first practice in full pads Saturday at 7 p.m.

Lovie doesn't need his players to win to save his job. He has been the most successful Bears coach since Halas
___________________________

Not even remotely close to the truth.

Since Halas, the Bears had a coach who won 63% of the games he coached for the team. Won the big game when he got there. And never had three staright (four if you count this season) seasons where he missed the playoffs.

After this year, we will no longer have to see the now iconic shot of Lovie with his mouth agape staring cluelessly at the scoreboard.

Shamu-
Laugh if you want, but I am not making up the numbers. George Halas won 58% of his games as a head coach, Lovie has won 54%. And NFL.com has the Bears schedule ranked as the 9th easiest in the league (they get Detroit and Minnesota twice each.)

Of course they wanna win for him. He expects nothing out of them and then they get big bucks for mediocrity. Id love to have him as my boss.

I'm just "STRUCK" by the negative viewpoint of so many Bear fans. This is a Chicago team, you can't predict their outcome, prior to the season. How many folks HAS THE WHITE SOX in 1st place this year? And how many had the Cubs doing so poorly? OR the Black hawks winning it all???

When it comes to the Bears, I accept the changes made in the coaching ranks, hope for a Healthy Urlacher and Harris. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE told Jay Cutler- "You have 1- of the BEST KICKERS in the league.
No need to force throws. 3 points-
(a FG) is a heckuva lot better than no points.

The dynamics of a football team's fortune/mis-fortune, can change in a heartbeat. What if Favre doesn't comeback? What if the league FINALLY suspends the 2 Williams fellas? What if Rodgers gets hurt in Green Bay?

I'm looking forward to the season. Hell I'm tired of this heat and the Cubs stink. Thank goodness for the White Sox.

GO BEARS!!!!

Lovie doesn't need his players to win to save his job. He has been the most successful Bears coach since Halas and he has no worries about losing his job. Meatheads want a "screamer" even though these types of coaches haven't won a Super Bowl in many years.
The Bears have an favorable schedule and the Vikings will be struggling to win 8 games this year. The Packers and the Bears will be the cream of the NFC and will both get playoff bids.- - - - - - - - - - - Most successful coach since Halas? Favorable schedule? Ah-hahahahahahahah. Please pass that joint my friend.

I'm going with the lose them all so we can get rid of Lovie theme.

Yes, I was the captain of the Titanic, and my wife called me "Lovie". So?

This season is a win-win.
If somehow Lovie's lackeys can guide the team to the playoffs, fine. If not, we finally lose this clown who thinks making adjustments at the half means doing something different after eight games, and his all his Tampa buddies.

See, win-win.

Unless, of course, Lovie finds another coordinator to be the scapegoat. then we're screwed.
