Reds slugger Joey Votto wasn't going to pat a hated division rival on the back, even if he did play a key role in the National League's first All-Star Game victory since 1996.
According to Yahoo.com, Votto refused to congratulate teammate Marlon Byrd of the Cubs, who threw out Boston's David Ortiz at second base with a throw from right field in the ninth inning and worked a key walk in a seventh-inning rally that gave the NL a 3-1 win Tuesday and home-field advantage in the World Series.
"I don't like the Cubs," Votto told ESPN. "And I'm not going to pat anybody with a Cubs uniform on the back."
He did acknowledge, however, that Byrd made a "really cool play."
Votto, who was voted onto the team on an Internet ballot, did little to contribute to the NL cause, going 0-for-2.

This has nothing at all to do with baseball and /or it's teams. It's all about character. If Votto wants to present himself as a classless man with no character, that's his choice. However, when his career ends he is not made welcomed at social events, he will attone for his actions. As a man , you must look within yourself to decide how you wish to define yourself through your character. I for one chose not to bask others, there's enough of that in the media to go around

Joey must've skipped his meds. He went AWOL a year or 2 ago and couldn't compete to deal with personal issues. He's acting like Sox management..bitter, arrogant and still irrelevant"""
I guess someone not being able to deal with the death of their father makes them weak... get a clue you troll.
irrelevant is what you call soriano.
Marlon Byrd is one of the hardest playing baseball players in the game. He plays the game the way it should be played. If Votto doesn't like him then, so what? Votto does not play as hard as Marlon. Look at the idiots Marlon plays with on a daily basis - in spite of that he goes all- out on every play.
"Yeah, sour grapes. Reds in first, Cubs, where? Oh that's right...nowhere."
You're right, Mac, the Cubs are nowhere this year. Exactly where the Reds have been for about as long as anyone can remember. At least the Cubs have had a sniff of the playoffs in the last decade.
This guy is all right. He is obviously wise. He doesn't want to pat anyone with a Cub uniform because he doesn't want to catch Cub terribleness. Good luck to him and Dusty Baker, it would be fun watching his team get swept by the White Sox in the World Series this year.
Old school baseball, hate everyone not on your team. I'm all for it. Now let's see if Votto gets ear holed the next time the Cubs and Reds play. That's the way it should be. Open your mouth, and get a 4-seamer in your back.
Votto sounds like a child. I hope he breaks a leg. And all the idiot baseball fans commenting negatively here about the Cubs, grow the F up. Morons.
"Sour grapes from a guy whose team will implode before the season ends."
Yeah, sour grapes. Reds in first, Cubs, where? Oh that's right...nowhere.
And LBJ, just how is Sox managment "irrelevant"? What does that even mean? Like them or hate them they are always quite relevant. Guess you passed on the vocabulary lesson in grade school. Or maybe you're jealous that the White Sox are competing. Either way, what do the White Sox have to do with this story? I suppose Cub fans do care about the Sox after all. HAHAHA. And even if Sox management were "irrelevant" would you be talking about their exceptional GM or their awesome manager? Please explain...

Wait - is this the same 'unstable' Joey Votto? Musta forgot to take his meds.
-------------------------------------------------------
Yeah Steve, clinical depression is hilarious! This whole thing really warrants us ripping on his mental issues. I supposed whenever someone with those types of problems does something we don't like we should just rip their problem. Nice!
We have enough problems. So what that Votto doesn't like the Cubs. We should be praying that Ricketts doesn't drink the Jim Spendry kool aid and keep this bum of a gm. Remember who fired Dusty. Where is Dusty these days? Oh yea, managing the Reds to first place with Votto on the team. Where are the Flubbies? Oh yea, a million games out of first with the highest payroll in the national league. Good work Spendry.
If you thrive on hating another team more than you love your own, you should be playing for the White Sox.
Wait - is this the same 'unstable' Joey Votto? Musta forgot to take his meds.
P.S. Can't wait 'til Dusty blows a few arms out down there & their run is DONE!!!
Normally, I would find this annoying. But Votto is Canadian and my mom taught me not to say bad things about people with disabilities.
Actually Joey Votto clapped Marlon on the back after he scored the third run of that inning, thus congratulating him. So...why is this a story?
I'm a Cubs fan, but I think this is great. Reds and Cubs are division rivals and they should 'hate' each other. There's too much friendship and camaraderie between players on different teams these days.
Classless Jerk! You are at the All Star Game to represent the National League. Put your hatred for the Cubs aside for one night. I cant wait for the collapse of Dusty and the Reds
Thanks for giving the Cubs some good bulletin board material, Joey!! (they need that--thank you)
I wonder what his father would have thought of this.
Let's see here...
Votto: voted in last minute by internet poll, goes 0-2 batting, no memorable plays on defense.
Byrd: voted in immediately as a reserve BY HIS PEERS, rallies for a walk and later scores a run, then makes biggest hustle play of the game to get a crucial 2nd out in the 9th.
Any you opened your mouth why, Votto??
Matt on July 15, 2010 2:22 PM
You are a new favorite Mr. Votto. Good work.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Why?
You are a new favorite Mr. Votto. Good work.
Who's Joey Votto?
It's a non story. All Cubs fans would love to have Votto!
Joey Votto can go suck a "Richard". I'm not a Cubs fan, but I know what decent character human being is, one being Byrd. Joey clearly has some issues, one of which is being a Jagbag.
Even more reason to like Joey Votto!!!
