ND's Brey to handle player arrests his way

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Mike Brey has 23- and 20-year-old children. And a decade ago, before his first practice as Notre Dame's basketball coach, he had to answer for a star player's brush with the law.

So the weekend underage drinking arrests of two of his players, Tim Abromaitis and Eric Atkins, were disappointing and unfortunate -- but not nearly unprecedented in Brey's world.

"It's handled downtown, it's handled by Student Affairs, and then the old coach will address it," Brey said Tuesday during a general catch-up session with reporters.

"The one thing I'll say is, a lot of sweating will be involved."
Abromaitis, the second-leading scorer for the Irish last season, and Atkins were among more than 40 people arrested when police broke up a house party in South Bend last weekend.

They have July 30 court dates for the misdemeanor underage consumption charges and then must go through the process with Notre Dame's Office of Residence life before Brey imposes any discipline.

And judging by precedent, Abromaitis and Atkins are not likely to face severe consequences from the legal system, or Student Affairs, as first-time offenders.

As for Brey's punishment, that's a different story.

"Both of those guys called me, they called me right away," Brey said. "The tone is, 'I'm very disappointed, and now it's just got to run its course.'

"We'll handle it in our locker room, like we always do."
