Cutler: Olsen will have key role in Martz's offense

BOURBONNAIS -- Jay Cutler isn't worried about Greg Olsen finding a role in the new Bears' offense.

Fans will get their first glimpse of Mike Martz's new show Friday afternoon when the Bears practice in shells at Olivet Nazarene University, and one of the interesting things will be how Olsen and the tight ends are deployed in the system.

What may have been some initial hesitation on the part of Olsen -- he knows Ernie Conwell's 38 receptions in 2001 is the most for a tight end in a Martz offense -- has changed, according to Cutler.

"I think Greg was a little bit frustrated early on because we were doing a lot of receiver sets and stuff," Cutler told "The Mully & Hanley Show" on WSCR-AM 670. "You've got to buy into the offense and I think that once he did buy into it and once he started doing everything he was asked to do, a lot more balls started going his way.
"Just talking with Mike, tight ends are going to be huge targets for us. We're going to use them down in the red zone, third down. Greg is so versatile we can put two receivers in and put him in and he can block for us, he can go out for us, he can do a lot of different things. So, I think if you talk to Greg recently, I think he is really happy with the offense and the direction it is going."

Cutler also has talked to Martz about the moving pocket and roll-outs. Cutler throws well on the run and is known for being a mobile quarterback. Previous offensive coordinator Ron Turner got to some of the bootleg and roll-out material in the playbook too late last season after Cutler publicly campaigned for it. Martz's quarterbacks typically have been dropback passers, but the Bears are looking to utilize Cutler's athleticism.

"Mike is definitely open to ideas and different things," Cutler said. "He's a football coach and he is going to do anything it takes to win games and if it means rolling out of the pocket that is what he is going to do. He's bent a little bit, we've put in some roll-outs. He's asked me some questions about things I have done in the past.

"It is definitely going to be a part of our offense. How big? We don't know that yet. It's going to depend on game plans and who we're playing against. We definitely have some stuff like that in there."

"I think we can all agree that Cutler will struggle in Martz' offensive system"

Um, no. We don't have the slightest idea yet whether he will struggle or not. Jeez, let's at least wait until the third pre-season game before making ridiculous proclamations.

Anybody remember me? I led us to the Super Bowl! If I can do it than Jat certainly can!!
----------------------------

I'm sorry son, you didn't lead us to a Superbowl. That's just what we told you. The Defense carried you to the Bowl and you made a few plays here and there. But my Tampa 2 scored the critical game winning TDs and dont forget Hester broke records on Special Teams and scored like 6 TDS that year! You Rex just did enuff not to lose for us. And then when we played the Colts All three of phases let us down. Oh well at least we beat the Saints to claim the NFC. BEAR DOWN MONSTERS 2010!

LAST YEAR LAST YEAR....Joe Montana couldnt have did well last year in our offense...Didnt realize we have so many Cutler haters...Out of all the OC's he's had this should be his best 1..They all have to do Very Well for there futures sake. There will be a chip on the shoulders of our Bears and really 1 on Cutlers. I will admit Jay did horrible last year im sure he wont repeat or no one would ever look in his direction again..So keep on hating haters. 3,666yards 26int 28Td I believe and his worst season ever imagine what he will do when he gets the proper coaching and he will make some bone head plays but thats part of the game.Cutler was under a parker brothers Offense everyone knew how to play it and beat it. So you doubting clowns BEAR DOWN find another team fair-weather fans, Let us real fans do the talking for our team .

I think we can all agree that Cutler will struggle in Martz' offensive system, but that doesn't mean the guy should just be thrown away after failing this year. Have some faith, he is young and maybe one day he will figure it out enough to use that arm of his effectively in another system.

QB's with slow reaction times and poor football instincts like Cutler have a tenancy of getting killed in offenses that force them to make quick decisions, I can't see any way he thrives in the environment he is going to play in this year. I think this is going to be a very long season for Cutler and the Bears, but it should force top to bottom changes at Halas hall afterward so it may be worth it.

I agree with BearsFan75, I mean if Cutler can't lead Vanderbilt to victory in a conference as weak as the SEC, he's obviously a loser.

If Martz and Cutler can click early enough we will have a legit shot at 500 this year, but we're going to need to get a couple breaks. Let's hope so.

Lets give the guy a chance. Last year Ron Turner's system got exposed. He was the most predictable OC in the league. Run up the middle run up the middle throw across the middle. Punt or interception. At least Martz will throw to the the RBs and not run them up the middle. Our offense also needs to get vertical Martz will do that. He got 4000 yard out of Jon Kitna on the Lions. He is going to do just fine with Cutler. Its Lovie and the D that I worry about if they don't adjust their system were not gonna stop anybody. Our TEs will be fine as well Olsen will get less balls but he does need to improve his blocking so its good they are challenging him. Manumaluena will help when we do long drops being like a 6th lineman out there.

Putting Cutler and Martz together is so Bears, a guy who has always wilted under pressure in Cutler and a guy who puts a ton of pressure on QBs in his system in Martz, how could this go wrong?

Bearsfan75 on July 30, 2010 9:03 AM

Everywhere Cutler goes losses follow, I see no reason to believe this year will suddenly change a lifelong problem for him. We bet on the wrong horse and I'm afraid we're going to be paying for it for a long time. But I hope not.

Cutler couldn't handle the offense last year, there's no chance a guy like him cam handle Martz' antiquated system. This will be a long year for Cutler so get your excuses ready.
