Shortstop phenom Starlin Castro will bat eighth in his Cubs debut Friday in Cincinnati. (Phil Velasquez/Tribune)
By Paul Sullivan
CINCINNATI -- The Starlin Castro era is set to begin for the Cubs. The 20-year-old shortstop was summoned Friday from Double-A Tennessee and will bat eighth in the opener of a three-game series against the Reds.
"I'm happy. Whoo!" Castro said in the clubhouse before the game, adding he was surprised when he received the phone call saying he'd been promoted,
"I said, 'Are you serious?"' Castro said.
Cubs general manager explained the team's decision in a conference call with reporters.
"We're excited about bringing Starlin to the big leagues," Hendry said. "Obviously, he's a quality prospect and a quality young man.
"We made the moves for a couple reasons. He played awfully well in Double-A for the first 28-30 games of the season -- a very low error rate this year and swinging the bat very well. ... We also felt he could come up and we'd get better defensively by having him at short and moving Ryan (Theriot) to second, which we think will be good for him, too."
Asked about making the switch before Friday's game, Theriot said, "It'll make our team better. Hopefully it'll kick-start us."
Hendry said he'd been considering the move for the last week, and came to the decision in Pittsburgh, where the Cubs were swept by the Pirates. The move was not a reaction to the sweep, Hendry said.
"I knew two days ago I was going to do this before Cincinnati," he said.
Castro is batting eighth in Friday night's batting order, and his presence in the lineup has shifted Theriot back to second, where he hasn't played regularly since 2006. .
The pressure is now on Castro to perform, but the Cubs hope he can just play well defensively at short. Any offensive contribution will be a bonus.
"Hopefully, the young man gets off to a good start," Hendry said. "We're not going to put pressure on him to do that. We just want him to come up and play good defense and let the offense take care of itself.
"I'm sure Lou is going to hit him down in the lineup for a while and let him get adjusted. Nobody is a finished product when they get to the big leagues at 20. We certainly don't want him to feel that kind of pressure, but sometimes a young player does give a club a lift."
The Cubs now have only one left-handed hitter in the regular lineup, but Hendry was not concerned about that. Mike Fontenot will be on the bench, leaving Kosuke Fukudome as the only lefty hitter.
"We all knew (Castro) was coming, and that's why we had a few left-handers in reserve," he said. "Now 'Font' will not play as much, obviously. He'll have to fight for his time and we'll have another left-handed hitter on the bench. The good players, it doesn't matter if they're right or left. We just need our marquee players to play like they always have."
Hendry also said that the move of Theriot to second base won't be a problem, despite Theriot's lack of playing time at the position since '06. Theriot was working at second with Castro at short before Friday's game, with Alan Trammell coaching both of them.
Castro, who at the age of 20 years and 44 days is the youngest Cubs rookie since 19-year-old Oscar Gamble in 1969, impressed Lou Piniella in spring training and hit .376 with one homer, 14 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs in 26 games at Tennessee. He had four stolen bases but has been caught stealing five times. He will wear uniform No. 13.
The Cubs sent Chad Tracy to Triple-A Iowa to complete the move, and promoted former first-round pick Andrew Cashner from Double-A Tennessee to Iowa and third baseman Josh Vitters from Class-A Daytona to Tennessee.
Here's the Cubs lineup for Friday night against Reds right-hander Homer Bailey:
Theriot 2B
Fukudome RF
Lee 1B
Byrd CF
Ramirez 3B
Soriano LF
Soto C
Castro SS
Silva P

Quite a debut for the kid, indeed. Ramirez looked like he was just going through the motions out there tonight. Grabow can't even close out a laugher without giving up runs.
Soriano in May:
4 HR, 7 RBI, .400 Avg, 1.500 OPS
Sit the hottest hitter in the league? Come on.
Why is Soriano starting today against a righty when the last 2 games he swinging like the old Sorry .. At balls in the dirt etc.. Colvin should have out and out started today against a righty.. Common Lou dont do to him what you did to Fuld. Play him against lefties .. Makes no sense.. Lou sucks. Same o Lou .. he cant evem make out a good lineup .. Yah Lou bat Castro 8th when he the best hitter on the team
Why is ramirex batting 5th.. Hes like Soto now. Only wants to walk since they know if they swing if will be an out While Soto is batting better his AVG will drop if he swings alot.. Now another key hitter Rami waiting for walks cause he knows he cant hit.
Unfortunately Castro may save Lou;s job this year.. I want Lou and Hendry gone!!!. Lous's comments about castro not being a savior or real help sucks.. Hell save your face Lou.. Now if you only get get Fuku to hit without his batting ciach from Japan on the road.. Colvin should be playing .. You are the worst Lou bat him 8th when hes the best hitter you got all Spring and for the next ? many years
Remember I said Castro and Colvin batted in a majority of the Cubs runs in the Spring.. Remember me saying that he should have stayed up at the beginning and Nady should have been sent down .. Well 1st at bat Castro hit a 3 run HR.. Now if we can only get Colvin some time playing.. lou can play this bum Ramirez till he drops .. Bat him 8th .
Next we need to get Lee some rest ..Playing everyday for this elder is telling .. If only the cubs had a left batting 1st baseman that could hit to give him a ocassional rest!!!
WOOOOOW 3run HR one 1st MLB AT BAT?? WHAT? YESSSSSSSSS This is the spark we need.
Ramirez should NOT be starting today.. What a joke. If people should be held responsible and pay the price, Ramirez should be sitting after 2 errors and more strike outs yesterday. If your going to make changes sit the guys NOT producing and heck Ramirez aint producing .. He should be batting 8th ! Colvin should be playing ,especially against a righty, but which outfieder should sit ??? . Lou always bats guys like Fuld and Colvin against lefties and they bat lefty .. I dont get it. Hope Soriano hits today, because I would have sat him for Colvin. Hope Im wrong..Sorry didnt have a good last game or so. When Colvin, Castro and couple other rookies were playing at the same time in the Spring they scored a ton..Lou sucks Send down Tracy would was playing grewat at third and play the guy against a righty that game has gone south .. I dont get it!!!
Oh for joy, now you flubber-dubbers get to listen to Len and Bob put a swell happy face on the brand new era. Those two are pure puke, the worst TV team in MLB.
This is a last ditch effort by Lou and Hendry to keep their jobs. If the Cubs don't improve in the next week, I believe Lou will be fired.
This will buy Hendry some time to save his job, however, I think he will be launched before the end of the year.
Castro is an excellent prospect, who if given time, will succeed. Colvin should play every day, but alas, the Cubs will let him roton the bench. The silver lining in all this, hopefully, is that Ricketts will blow up the team in July fire Lou and Hendry and start building a young hungry team for 2011.
I hope this is the jolt they need. I hope they released baker. Perhaps bring up Josh Vitters to and get rid of Ramirez. He is finished after last year's injury and now that is not on the juice any longer.
is he really going to wear #13? Oh boy, here we go....
I swear the Cubs could make a trade and get back Pujols, Utley, Jeter, and A-Rod, and most of you fools will still find something to complain about. For those of you saying he'll bust because Pie and Patterson did, why would you assume that? I mean, the farm system did just fine with Theriot, Marmol, Zambrano, Soto, Wells, Berg, and Russell. And for the record, Patterson was having a pretty good 2003 before he blew out his knee and missed the entire second half of the season. Who knows what would have happened if he had stayed healthy? Plus, as someone all ready pointed out, there are new people running the system now than there were back when Pie came up. That's like saying the Bears had a bad draft in 2006, so this year's draft must be awful too. Different people calling the shots, different types of players involved, apples and oranges.
And for those of you complaining about Castro's lack of playing time, can you tell me what the Lotto numbers are going to be for the next week since you are so good at seeing into the future? I mean, it would be one thing if they called him up today and he didn't play, but right up there is Castro's name, playing short and batting 8th.
And Castro is in a completely different situation than Colvin, so you can't take his playing time as the main factor in how much playing time Castro will get. Colvin is in the outfield with Soriano, Byrd, and Fukudome. Last I checked, they were all over .300, had a combined 17 homers and 54 Rbi. And let's also not forget that they all have large contracts, contracts maybe too large to sit on the bench. If one of them was not playing well, then I could see the argument for having Colvin play more, but since all three are playing well then how could you justify sitting one for Colvin for the rest of the season? As for Castro, he can plug into short, Theriot can move to second, and Fontenot can move to the bench without much difficulty.
And finally, even if Castro and Colvin do sit on the bench, it's not like they won't be doing anything. First off, there's a huge difference between playing at AA and sitting on a major league bench. A lot of being a major leaguer is how you prepare for the games and what you do to observe during the game. At AA players are just trying to get noticed by the big league club, so you don't really learn much from your teammates there. But at the big league level, you can learn a lot from just watching what the vets do before, during, and after the game. Also, I'm pretty sure that working with the AA hitting coach is nowhere near as good as working with Rudy Jaramillo. Even if Castro and Colvin don't play every game, I'm sure they will be working with Jaramillo everyday and that will pay off tremendously in the long run.
In my opinion, we should have kept Tracy, and sent Jeff baker packing.
Hendry being excited is the kiss of death!
Can we please stop pretending that Colvin is even remotely close to the level of prospect that Castro is?
Colvin grades out to a fourth OF, at best.
Castro, everyday SS.
If Castro struggles, he'll get sent down to get AB's, play everyday. That's what his future entails
Colvin's future/present is a backup OF. That's it. He is not better than any of the three regular outfielders. Probably never will be.
Bring up Castro and keep him on the bench with Colvin. Makes perfect Cub sense.
All those idiots comparing the Patterson's & Pie's of the world to the regime that currently has the Cubs farm system ranked 7th & sure to go up very soon are idiots! This is a completely different group Tim Wilken is one of the best at his job. Google him & get some info before you ignorantly post. They also have a shit load of new hires in the development & scouting end of things. So stop. Its like comparing the Cubs of the past to the Blue Jays system. I think they should have waited 3 more weeks, but He certainly belongs. He's widely endorsed by every expert there is. No one has this kid as not being a legit starting SS in MLB.
Hey FP Justin,
Just checked... DeRosa is hitting .205 in San Francisco. We already have enough hitters doing that.
But glad you're keeping track.
yeah real nice hendry. hows that whole getting rid of mark de rosa idea working out for you.i hope rickets is ready to pull the deal that involves you riding off into the sunset. maybe you can go to over to the toledo mudhens and sell some white walls
In the spring the cubs score d alot of runs.. Mostly Colvin and Castro RBI.Lou dont know how to manage unless he has 8 string hitters.. thats why Castro is coming up.. Lou dont want to manufacture runs. COLVIN should be in the lineup against a righty// Lou is going to screw up this guy ..like he did Sam Fuld.. Only batting hhim against a lefty like yesterday .!!! Lou sucks!!! if Sorry doesnt have his batting coach from Japan on the road , he dont hit!!! At home he hit a ton with the coach .. On the road NOT so!!!!

I welcome this move; however, I hope that the young man is put in lineup and stays there long enough to prove he is ready. Too often the Cubs bring up a prized recruit and then let him collect spider/cob webs and dust on the bench, that regulars (who haven't did the job) can play to regain their stroke.
I see this to some extent with Colvin, who is better all around than a couple others on team.
Will this get the Cubs going, I doubt it. Until regulars Rameriz and Lee once again find themselves, this team will flounder because Lou won't keep either on bench.
How pathetic to get "excited" right after you get swept by the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates
This is a big mistake. They are going to ruin this kid. Theriot is hotting and playing decent shortstop. They don't need to rudh the kid up and ruin his confidece forever.
AA is a long way from the big leagues.
The Cubs see thier kingdom quickly fading and are desperate.
A STARlin is born?
(Sorry, couldn't contained myself. Embarrassing).
hoping that 13 is close to 14.
Why send down Tracy a left bat to platoon with Ramirez .. If you have a right handed pitcher you cant platoon with Baker (a right handed bat).. UNLESS they plan on playing Fontenot at third, it makes no sense to keep baker up and send down Tracy.. Ramirex needs to sit against righties..
Also they nned to find a left handed batting 1st basemean that can hit 280 to help give a rest to Lee.. Lee plays all the time and needs a rest.
Batting a kid that has little plate dicipline 8th, that is a sure way to destroy him as quick as possible. He belongs at 2 or 7 where he will see a few more strikes.
I liked Bobby Scales.
Good job on spelling Cincinnati incorrectly.
The Pirates are a farm team for the rest of the majors. Maybe we should recruit one of them!
Hey Ghost,
Don't forget kevin Orie and Ty Griffin, two other "can't miss" prospects of the past. The Cubs are totally incapable of evaluating young talent.
"I'm sorry, but any PHENOMS come out of the White Sox organization that Kenny Williams DIDN'T trade away? "
Well, there's Gordon Beckham (who slumped like this last year before turning in a solid year), and also that pretty much everyone Williams has traded has done squat in the majors if they even managed to make it there. The best anyone has done so far is, who, Chris Young? Most of the rest have been failures or scrubs. John Danks and that one awesome year of Carlos Quentin have been better than anything they've sent away since Williams' first year or two on the job.
Anyway, this move only makes sense if Lou is under absolute orders to not bench Castro under any circumstances other than the occasional rest. I'm not sure he's ready, but if you're going to find out you have to play him and let him try to work through the inevitable slumps. Beckham was a more accomplished hitter by far when he came up (mashed in the minors, led the NCAA in home runs his last year in college) and he still had some awful slumps, and still does. Patience is a virtue.
How does Lou Brock fit with that list? He didn't suck, the Cubs just traded him away.
My mistake on Latroy
Prior was a Cubs prodigy...he was hailed as the second coming and was ineffective after one or two ok years. He has an integral place on that list like it or not.
LaTroy Hawkins was a FA signing...NOT a Cubs Rookie prospect!
Do you even follow the Cubs?
BTW: Prior doesn't belong on that list. His problems were not ineffectiveness as were the others.
Mike Harkey
Lou Brock
Jerome Walton
Dwight Smith
LaTroy Hawkins
Corey Patterson
Mark Prior
Felix Pie
Starlin Castro??
This sucks if true..Tracy playing third better than Ranirez , bats lefty so can platoor with Ramirez until he gets going.. Why Tracy he looked great at third.. Send down Nady not Tracy..THis org dont know what they are doing !!! or send down one of the young relief pitchers !!
As long as next year is starting now, play Colvin everyday. Next year when "The Fuke" is gone, Colvin will already have had a full year of experience to build on.
Anything will be better than the listless crap that laid down in Pittsburgh.
They should send Colvin to the minors for he could play everyday. Cubs are destroying Colvin.
This is not about Theriot or Fontenot this is about a kid that oviously can hit and is a better defensive player than either of those two. I love the move
Might as well start the rebuilding process now. I don't think this is an overreaction like the Zambrano-to-bullpen move. When you get swept by the worst franchise is sports, something has to change. These guys are awful
Why wasn't Castro at AAA?
A little early to bring him up, but I guess Neifi Perez wasn't available.
Only because Cub Phenoms
Corey Patterson and Felix Pie weren't available.
How many years have we heard about the "untouchable" phenom prospects in the Flub organization?
This kid could be the next Ronny Cedeno! He needs consistent at bats. Are they going to stick with him while he learns how to hit major league pitching? I hope I am wrong, but I bet he struggles to hit 200-240. That won't help him or the Cubs. They really need to trade for relief pitching NOW!
100 loss or 100 wins, I'm still going to love the Cubs.
Sure they're older players and probably not so great but if your scouting is doing their job, finding young prospects shouldn't be that hard.
Guys who probably could hit .200 and not cost a lot:
Bobby Scales
Micah Hoffpauir
Jason Dubois
Brett Jackson
Josh Vitters
Brian LaHair
I know it's not a popular idea given the amount of "Can't Miss" guys that completely missed. Developing young talent isn't a strong point with the Cubs.
Let's just hope the Cubs turn this thing around soon...
Anyone find it interesting that the two guys not taking to Rudy Jaramillo's approach are the one's that are struggling the most? If D-Lee and Rammy really know their own swing, how do you explain BAs of .217 and .148 respectively? Whereas the guys taking to Rudy are hitting .341, .339, .315, .338, & .296 (Theriot, Byrd, Soriano, Soto, & Fontenot). I know veteran big-leaguers can be stubborn, but c'mon! Utilize your team's resources to help yourself help your team.

DO you fall down a lot?
This is a money ploy. The Cubs suck this year and just got swept by the worst team in baseball. Attendance is down this year and the Ricketts are starting to worry. With all the renovations planned and the over payed team they can ill afford to lose interest in the team. Starlin is being brought up for use to continue paying $50 for a damn bleacher ticket just to sit with a bunch of drunks who don't know squat about the time.
"Cubs calling up phenom Starlin Castro for Cincinnatti series
Updated 10:18 a.m."
Yeah, Cincinnati only has one t.
Cubs starting pitching is 11th in the majors and that's with Silva and Gorzelanny in the rotation and one of the elite pitchers in baseball in the bullpen. I don't think Rothschild or any of of the starting pitching is much of a concern. The bullpen is certainly of concern but that blame is firmly on the GM not the pitching coach.
No trade clauses are waived all the time for the right situation. Ramirez, Lee, and Z will bounce back to form by late June. If there is a GM (Hendry) willing to pay Soriano the kind of money he's getting, then there is a GM out there that'll trade for his bat. Fukudome and Byrd also have value. A contender will come knocking sooner or later to gauge what the Cubs thinks all of these guys are worth. When they do, I say let them go. I would hate to see some of these guys be traded, especially with the production from the OF positions, but they should have done this last year. I mean Jake Fox could have got the same numbers as Ramirez has right now if he started everyday, don't you think?
Get what you can and start rebuilding.
Castro just gained a year toward arb status, tho I doubt anyone reading this has any clue what I'm talking about.
Barely 20 y/o, skinny, has played only 60 games as high as AA. He's improved his plate patience lately, but that's still a major concern against advanced pitching. He has excellent range and defensive skills but errs on too many routine plays. He's fast but doesn't know how to steal a base.
He's very talented, but this promotion is about two months premature. Hendry doesn't care. He's in panic mode to try to save his job. Castro or no Castro, this team is no championship contender. It's cluttered with slow, aging, overpaid, overrated, injury-prone core players. Hendry is risking the future to try to bolster the present. Dumb and irresponsible in this case.
Fontenot is not whats wrong here, it is management on the field, last year the same as this year to many LOB,the main job for a batter is to move runners to the next base, not to hit a 500 ft home run, with runners on base, shorten your swing,go to the opposite field,do whatever you can to move a runner ahead. Runs and wins will follow.
"Bring back Hoffpauir and Fuld and let them get some ABs during the rebuilding."
@Jeff:
Have you looked at what both of those guys are doing at Iowa? If career minor leaguers pushing 30 are part of the "rebuilding" process then we should prepare ourselves for some 100-loss seasons.
why not send the pitching coach larry rothchild to the minors ... sure hitting has sucked, but between a deplorable relief staff and now the mental lapses from the starters (Wells admitted he got cocky and wasn't prepared) LARRY NEEDS TO GO ... he's a relic and since he STOLE the job from Oscar Acosta, pitching has been the most inconsistent aspect of the team ...
Ramirez is the one killing the team. Close behind is D-Lee. Everyone else has been really good. Theriot has been great, and last time I checked, Fontenot was hitting over .300. Ramirez should be the one sent down to get his stroke back.
Whom would they trade away? Soriano would be impossible to trade. Ramirez is playing awful. Lee is in a contract year and playing awful. Zambrano is the highest paid middle reliever ever in baseball. Oh and all four of them have No trade clauses.
This is a headline grabber, but little else!
Unless the kid can pitch, it's not gonna mean much and may even risk dwarfing his progress in the long run.
He's not going to move into Z's spot in the starting rotation or Lilly's if he has to slow his pace after being rushed back to service too soon!
The CUBS issues are on the mound not up the middle defensively or at the bottom of the line-up offensively.
The urgency should be to trade for pitching as soon as possible!
Another phenom? Remember Patterson, Hill, etc, etc. Glad to see Theriot moved -- worst shortstop in the majors, and doesn't seem to care when he bobbles or doesn't get to a ball!
As long as they bring him up and let him play out the year regardless of results, this will be a really strong move.
This team probably isn't going anywhere this year. Why not trade the veterans for some solid young pitching. Let Colvin and Castro play everyday. Bring back Hoffpauir and Fuld and let them get some ABs during the rebuilding. I'd rather see a young team grow and get better over time than an older overpaid team fail to produce...
I am glad to see castro come up. But tracey is the wrong one to send down. How about that high paid 3rd baseman who apears to be able to do nothing but pop out all the time. I dont care what he makes or what he may do someday. RIght know he is in a major slump and is not helping the team and MUST GO>
**WOW!! You took the words right out of my mouth! Esp...the full of #$*@ part! Awesome

I’m sorry, but can Jim Hendry be any more full of &%$#? Sure, getting swept by Pittsburgh helped. But he was adamant last week that Castro wouldn’t get called up for some time, making it seem laughable that people were even discussing it.
I like the sense of urgency! This team needs a shake up. If Tracy is sent down, it's got to be because he's been told they are going to try and showcase some tradeable folks. He's veteran enough to understand that and deal with it. They need a back up 3B and LH stick. Tracy will be back up once they clear out a middle infielder, which with a sense of urgency should happen soon!
Right or wrong, this is a strong move.
Between Z getting put in the pen and this, it's easy to see a new direction is being taken by the front office.
The players are no longer running the show.
If he has a pulse, he should be an improvement over the 25 that are out there now. Terrible team put together at this point.
Coolies- Fontenot is terrible. .676 OPS? Come on. He has zero range. He's a poor fielder.
And he's a career .234 hitter as a PH with 1 HR. He's a major fail.
Yes, please don't let him turn into that southside phenom Gordon Beckham (who shoulda been ROTY, but now will probably be flipping burgers in a year or so).
I’m sorry, but can Jim Hendry be any more full of &%$#? Sure, getting swept by Pittsburgh helped. But he was adamant last week that Castro wouldn’t get called up for some time, making it seem laughable that people were even discussing it.
Sorry, Theriot and Fontenot SHOULD STAY. Where have you been David? The last few weeks Fontenot has picked it up. Problem is, the Cubs have too many good shortstops, 2nd basemen, and outfielders.
Hope so, because Fontenot and Theriot haven't been the problem. It's been the bullpen and the middle of the order. Another kneejerk reaction by the incompetent front office.
Is it time already for the next Cubs "phenom" to step in? I'm still amazed by what all the other Cubs "phenoms" have done - Patterson, Pie, Choi, Murton, Hill...
Is it Starlin Patterson or Felix Castro? I can never get the names straight of the north side team's phenoms of the month.
Kid can hit and has range plus strong arm in field, but too many errors last year. 32 errors through July last year (Daytona) translates to about 50 errors for a whole major league season. Pinella will explode with that kind of errors. Hopefully that's all in the past. Well, we will see!
Chad Tracy to the minors? How about sending Ramirez with the .150 average?
I hope castro performs under the pressure and I hope the cubs are patient with him. Please do not do this kid like they did felix pie.Pie got a raw deal and was benched or sent down after a 1-4 game.Be patient with castro
BE SWEEP BY THE PIRATES? losing one game to them is embarassing enough
and i thought we were back on track after the crush of the brewers
Sent the wrong guy down. Fontenot needs to geaux! He's so godawful.
Certainly can't hurt! Doesnt do us any good having him tear up the minors - we need someone in this lineup that can play baseball for crying outloud! There's an unwritten rule in MLB - YOU DONT GET SWEPT BY THE DAMN PIRATES!! This team is beyond pathetic.
Desperate times call for desperate measures...
As long as the kid is up here he needs to be in the lineup. If he has an 0-4 day DON'T SIT HIM! If you aren't gonna play him, send him back down.
YES This is what Im talking bout I hope this kid stays the cubs need a spark. This shows they are getting desperate.I will watch tonight.
