Georgia DT Owens fits Bears' system

Expectations are that the Bears will look at defensive back - either a safety or a cornerback - when they go on the clock Friday night with the 75th pick.

But if those positions have been picked over pretty good beforehand, the club is always looking for depth on the offensive line. The third round could be fertile ground to find  a guard. It could also be a place for general manager Jerry Angelo to consider a defensive lineman.

Consider in the last seven drafts, Angelo has used seven picks from the first three rounds on defensive linemen. In three of the last four drafts, he's used a third-round pick on a defensive lineman (Jarron Gilbert in 2009, Marcus Harrison in '08, Dusty Dvoracek in '06) and in '07 he used a second-round pick on Dan Bazuin.

One player who looks like he would fit the Bears' scheme well is Georgia defensive tackle Jeff Owens. At 6-1, 304 pounds, he's similar in many respects to Anthony Adams, who has been the Bears' most consistent interior lineman the last three seasons.

Owens is incredibly strong and can bench press 550 pounds. He did 44 reps at 225 pounds at the scouting combine, one shy of tying the record. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds, and has good lateral quickness for his size. He plays with good leverage.

Owens suffered a torn ACL in the 2008 season opener against Georgia Southern when he tried to hurdle a player. He was considered a strong prospect for the draft after that season, and now finds himself in a loaded class headed by Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy.

The Atlanta Falcons are known to like Owens and he's had private workouts with the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, so he's drawing interest from 4-3 and 3-4 teams. It could be that he becomes a third-round selection. The Bears have a cast of young players on the line, but that's by design and they're always looking to augment the group. So Owens is a player to keep an eye on Friday night and into Saturday if he slips past round three.

Perfect Angelo draft choice. Not a need position and a bum ACL. Sign him quick in the third round before another team gets him as an unsigned free agent!

JA... Trade next year's 1st, 4th and Olsen to NE for their last two 2nds .... get Nate Allen and Carolton Mitchell or John Asamoah....Maybe trade down with that last 2nd and see if you can pick up another 3... If your going to spend a 3rd on a DT why not try and get Haynesworth?....pick up another guard or corner with the rest of the picks and you have a pretty good draft and addressed your needs...GO BEARS... if they pan out you guys save your jobs with a 10 or 11 win season...

yup, sounds like a pick Angelo would make. Ignore our needs and try to make up for a prior year's bust
