CHAMPAIGN - Sunday wasn't the first time Illinois coach Bruce Weber and guard Demetri McCamey had, shall we say, a moment, and it certainly won't be the last (assuming McCamey does not enter the NBA Draft after this season).
But for as much as Weber gets on McCamey, it never seems to become a distraction.
Weber says what he says. McCamey hears it and that's that.
So it is, too, after their tiff Sunday during Illinois' 72-57 loss to Wisconsin.
"It was a nice teaching moment, a father-son talk," Weber said. "I was ashamed it happened on TV. I'm just happy he cares and I think a lot of it was out of frustration and that was it."
After McCamey committed a turnover and an intentional foul during Illinois' second-half comeback attempt, he became flustered, and when he walked back to the bench, bumped shoulders with Weber. Weber grabbed McCamey, pulled him back into the huddle and began screaming some words that would normally require a censor.
"I think a couple people blew it out of proportion as me trying to disrespect coach Weber, but we talked and I apologized," McCamey said. "But at the same time, coach Weber knew where I was coming from. It's like father and son. We both talked on the bench and cooled off and I got right back in."
Now Illinois gets ready to take on Wisconsin again on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament, a game the likely will need to win to make the NCAA Tournament.
"If you would've seen some of the ones I had with Derron (Williams) and Dee (Brown), that was nothing compared to that," Weber said. "It's just part of being a coach, a teacher and a dad, and making sure kids know what's right and wrong."
McCamey also was named to the All Big Ten Team on Monday, a goal he and Weber set for him early in the season.
"This season I took advantage and helped my teammates out and without them, I wouldn't have had the chance, and without coach Weber or Illini fans, they helped me get the award," McCamey said. "Now I just want to cherish it and bring it on the floor Friday."

It won't be long before BAM pulls a Knight and slugs a player. Fire the loser NOW!
Lets all hope McCamey decides to enter the draft! Up and down his entire college career. Totally agree with whoever made the comment about not looking any of his coaches in the eye. Total lack of respect.
Media always like to blow stuff out of proportion....as if basketball isn't a contact sport...leave Weber alone to do his thing, he didn't do anything wrong and he definitely didnt do it out of malace. I'm sure who ever McCamey's parents are, they appreciate someone making the effort to teach their son something.
Basically Campaign police could arrest Weber for his antics.
