White Sox 'team to beat' in AL, Danks says

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Manager Ozzie Guillen believes the White Sox have the starting pitching to compete with perennial American League powers New York and Boston.

Pitcher John Danks feels even stronger about the Sox's chances.

"I'll tell you what," Danks said after throwing three scoreless innings against San Francisco. "We feel we have just as good a chance as the next guy. We know it's a long season and got to play the games.

"But starting right now, we feel we're just as good as these guys. We'll go out and try to prove that. Who knows. We'll see. But starting today, we feel like we're going to be the team to beat down the stretch."

@Dibber-
Are YOU paying attention or just making generalizations?

Pierre is a lifetime .301 hitter who hit well over .300 while "playing everyday" for the Dodgers last year when Manny was out on suspension. Oh yeah, he also led the league in hits an SBs the one season he was Cub.

Rios had a bad 7 weeks with the Sox last year, but he was a carreer .285 hitter with Toronot and hit .291 as recently as 2008.

If you want to talk about "out machines" in the OF, look to the North Side where Fonzi and "The Fuke" will lead the way....

As far as Dank's prediction, why shouldn't he be confident? The Sox have as a good a roataion as NY or Boston (and better than the Angels). And they have a balanced line up that will score different ways, not just waiting for the 3 run homer.

Everyone looks at JD and Thome's power leaving, but they were both on the decline and they will have power spread out throughout the lineup. Aside from Pierre, they should get at least 15-20 HRs from each of the other regulars, with Konerko and Quentin capable of 30-35.

Karlito..."team to beat" is different than saying they have a chance...granted, I'm sure he was backed into a corner like all sports reporters seem to do and I'm sure it might have been taken a little bit out of context, but "team to beat" isn't exactly the opposite of "we have no chance". there's a middle ground.

I guess you dolts expect him to say the Sox have no chance. There's a lot of talent on this team. Granted a lot of things have to go right for them to win but it can be done.

Nice try, but no Heinie.

If Juan Pierre plays everyday, he WILL lead the league in outs made.

Alex Rios. Really nothing needs to said. This dog cashed in a couple years ago. Anyone paying attention realizes, he's awful.

Carlos. Good when he plays. Which will be reduced by at least 50 games this season.

Heinie Zimmerman on March 9, 2010 6:31 PM

Dibber, you bad. We are talking about the Sox, not the chubaronies. Boy if we were talking about the hey dare nortside, let me see whom from the laughables I would want for the Sox. Humm, let me see. I know there must be someone. How about, no he was a big time user. How about, no he hasn't thrown a pitch in the majors since 2004. You know what, I will have to get back to you on that one.

An out machine in LF. Even worse in CF. RF will last until the next testing period. Mediocre utility man a 3b.

Yeah. Way better than the Yankees.

This team is not better than the Yankees, Red Sox or even the Angels. Plus there's always the pesky Twins and the Tigers in their own division. Not saying the Cubs are anything special, but I think it's going to be a lean year for Chicago baseball in general.

There is a big differance on Dempster's comments. He was talking about the Cubs a few years ago while John Danks is talking about this years Sox. I could see Johnny's prediction being right on.

Ryan Dempster 2008 on March 9, 2010 4:53 PM

"I think we're going to win the World Series, I really do!"

John Danks "we are the team to beat this year, I can't see us winning less than 90 games this year".
