LAS VEGAS -- No. 1 draft pick Jared Mitchell will undergo surgery on his left ankle next week and could miss what would have been his first full professional season after colliding with the wall while making a catch against the Angels.
Mitchell, who was taken from the field on a cart, was diagnosed with a posterior tib tear on![]()
the upper inside of the ankle. No recovery time will be set until after the surgery.
"Very, very bad," manager Ozzie Guillen said."It's a shame. He has to use his speed.
Reassigned to the minor league camp two days ago, Mitchell was recalled because the Sox needed players for the split squad games. He had just entered the game as a defensive replacement.

Tom Z,
What does Mitchell have to do with JD?
Mitchell wasn't even going to make the team. He was already assigned to minor league camp.
The kid was injured making a great play. It's a freak accident
No coach is to blame, because everyone plays in spring training. And, for this year, there is no reason to panic, since Mitchell was at least a year away from the bigs. The team is set in the outfield, if not overloaded given the play of De Aza.
Let's just hope Mitchell's injury doesn't derail his career.
Bad luck, everybody is making this out to be a major surgery, I've never heard of it. Is it like an ACL injury to a knee? Or worse? He's 22 and in great shape, I'm sure with Herm Schneider doing the rehab he'll be back in a year good as new. He looked good in the games I saw, only time will tell if he makes it back.
This really sucks. I hope this has no ill effects on what would be a promising career for this kid. My prayers are with him for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. He was having a great spring and this kid is a gamer.
Mickey Moore r u stupid, watch the games and then pop off
Better hope we can still sign JD to some type of deal!!!!! Soon....
This is a terrible break for Jered Mitchell and the White Sox. This young kid sure looked like he was on the fast track to big league success.... Godspeed to a complete recovery.
Hey Mickey Mouse-
Every manager uses pulls their starters and puts in defensive replacements in spring training at least 9 times per game. Also, Ozzie was in Vegas and not managing this game.
Hate to see this, especially after hearing good things about his potential. You can't blame anybody but bad luck for this.
Who uses a defensive replacement in a pre-season game? Only Ozzie and this time it may have cost this kid his career.
