KINGSTON, R.I. -- Northwestern was looking good until Rhode Island freshman Akeem Richmond caught fire late in the first half.

Richmond, a 6-foot-1 freshman, scored 14 consecutive points to give his Rams a 37-30 lead into the break.

Northwestern took a 22-20 lead on a dunk by center Kyle Rowley, who started for the injured Luka Mirkovic. Rowley took a feed from Michael "Juice" Thompson to put the Wildcats ahead.

But then Richmond went off, drilling four 3-pointers (mostly over John Shurna) and a pair of free throws.

Thompson leads Northwestern with eight points. Shurna, who blew a dunk, has six points on 2-for-9 shooting.
