Wrigleyville post office could honor Goodman

stevegoodman.jpgWASHINGTON -- A Chicago post office would be renamed for the late singer-songwriter Steve Goodman under a measure introduced Tuesday in Congress.

Goodman, who died in 1984 at 36 after a long battle with leukemia, penned hits including "City of New Orleans" and local anthems such as "Lincoln Park Pirates,"  "Go, Cubs, Go" and "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request." His ashes were scattered in Wrigley Field.

Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., introduced the measure to have the Lakeview post office, 1343 W. Irving Park Road, renamed for Goodman. The lawmaker said the bill is supported by the entire Illinois congressional delegation, the Old Town School of Folk Music and musicians including John Prine, Bonnie Koloc and Corky Siegel.

An aide to Quigley said if all goes smoothly, a renaming ceremony could take place with a musical salute at the post office by late spring or early summer.

Why a post office?

James Bau Graves, executive director of the Old Town School of Folk Music, judged it "entirely fitting" since the business of everyday life inspired much of Goodman's work.

No-one reads any more...they just bite on a tag line...

Now every semi-bombed "WOOO! ! !" person -North or South side- will think this is about "GO CUBS GO"

This is NOT a proposal to honor "GO CUBS GO" on a Post Office!

Steve Goodman was a real talent...a Chicago born and raised talent.
Maine East
University of Illinois
Talent , Brains , and a giant heart!
Old Town and Lincoln Ave. are so different now...
for a couple of buck he would be sitting a few feet away
and play for hours with such musical integrity...funny, witty and an excellent player.
The kind of person that , by all rights , SHOULD have a building named after him...

This song having its meaning to all you Cubs fans is just like Harry Caray. You are so uneducated. Harry was with the Cardinals and the White Sox before going to the Cubs...which would end up killing him.
--------------------------------------------

You forgot Harry's one year with the A's, but of course the A's have nothing to do with the Cubs so I guess that's why a Sox fan like you wouldn't know about it. And considering Sox fans love the Hawk, it's no wonder why you aren't mad at Reinsdorf for driving away the last great announcer you had for some country bumpkin with a man crush on Yaz and with no ties to the organization itself. But he hates the Cubs and sulks when the Sox are not playing well, so I guess he is exactly like any Sox fan.

Tradition? HA!! You're so wrong, In 1987, the song gave way to The Beach Boys' "Here Come the Cubs". Later team songs included songs such as Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" and KC and the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight". This crap song didn't come back until 2007. Now that's tradition for a team as old as the Cubs...you fans are idiots. I like my White Sox tradition....play hard and try to win.
----------------------------------------------------

How about your other White Sox traditions like fireworks after each home run, singing Hey Hey Hey Goodbye when the opposing team takes out their pitcher, the shower in the outfield grandstands, those ugly green hats you are going to be wearing today, yelling out Hawkisms like He Gone after a Sox pitcher gets a K, Dog Day At the Park, Mullet Night, Half-Price Mondays with post-game fireworks, annoying commercials, tailgating, and of course the one tradition that every Sox fan loves to follow: obsession with the Cubs! Yup, good old Sox tradition of play hard and try to win that they decided not to follow last year. At least you still have those 50 other traditions that you do follow year in and year out.

Your parents basement doesn't count as a nice place.

Well done, fake Chuck

I am going to stop posting my inane, pointless, completely devoid of humor drivel now.

It is almost as painful for me to write it as it for you to read them. Almost.

I am sorry, I just can't contain my overpowering, almost creepy cubsession.

Steve Goodman was a great guy and artist and "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" was a perfect song for any Cub fan. Go Cubs Go is insufferable when sung by the thousands each day at Wrigley whose only care is getting to the 7th inning stretch or as Cubs fans call it, halftime, to sing along with great Cub fans like Jim Belushi, Blago or "the cute one" from "Gossip Girl" and after the game, Go Cubs Go, (a tradition since 2007!). In each spot they invariably say "is it time to sing yet".

What's wrong with playing a simple song to celebrate a win. Pretty harmless. At least there haven't been any full blown riots on the North Side.

Tradition? I don't care what they do as long as it does not cost the taxpayer even one cent.

White Sox fans complaining about Go Cubs Go. Don't Sox fans sing (or used to) Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye after a Sox player hits a homerun? A song from 1969 which has been around alot longer than Go Cubs Go. Quit complaining when you sing a song thats become very worn out, it's alot worse.

So what did he die of? Clubhouse Cancer? What a crappy song for a crap team. Its so sad that people still have that hope

tell me this is not so. i cant stand that song. i despise that guy for ever writing that awful piece of garbage. do not ruin my post office by naming it after him.

As a diehard Cubs fan I love hearing Go Cubs Go after a Cubs win and to those questioning why it's played the answer is simple, Tradition. It's also played to entertain the fans, isn't that why people go to a baseball game? Entertainment? To have fun? Why change tradition. Go Cubs Go and ivy covered walls are to Cubs fans and Wrigley Field as an exploding scoreboard was to Comiskey Park.

Love the story, the clip is very cool. You can clearly tell the guy's talent from it and he definitely passed too soon. The Go Cubs Go song is one of my absolute favorites. Newer teams like the Diamondbacks WISH they had something like that.

Let's all stay a little more positive.

Plenty of posts here from the moronic green hat wearing, ballpark avoiding set.

The creepy obsesion of all things Cubs of those from the disgusting side of town continues...

Why is there always one person who has to bring up the wars? In some people's mind, you cannot be honored in any way whatsoever as long as there are soldiers. I love the men and women in uniform, but seriously, lighten up.

It's really unfortunate that Steve Goodman is getting razzed about "Go Cubs Go" in the messages that accompany this article.

I'm a White Sox fan and a Jimmy Buffett fan. While I know that most people know Steve Goodman for Go Cubs Go, he was an OUTSTANDING songwriter. Jimmy Buffett songs like Banana Republics, This Hotel Room and California Promises are among my favorites. Of course we should also mention two songs that Steve wrote - City of New Orleans and You Never Even Called Me By My Name are classics. Steve left this world way too early.

So, while I know Steve Goodman aka "Chicago Shorty" was a Cubs fan (as is his good friend Jimmy Buffett), I don't hold it against him.

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at an age gap dating site- A_ge_m_in_gle @ c/o/m a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

Watching a drunken Cubby Nation wave "W" flags and sing this song after they beat some other piece of crap team like the Pirates or Nationals always produces a mixed reaction in me. While my stomach begins to churn and I can feel my lunch starting to come up, I also have the urge to laugh at those ridiculous Cubby fans celebrating a meaningless win during yet another losing season. Enjoy another year with no World Series rings, losers.

Without commenting on Steve Goodman's abilities as a musician, I just think there are others that are more deserving of this recognition. Who do we want to honor as a society? A songwriter who penned some catchy tunes or maybe one of the 97 Illinois residents who have died in Iraq in the last 7 years?

Edgewater on March 17, 2010 8:43 AM

This song is awful in every way. The droning, repetitive lyrics are incredibly annoying. I cringe when I see drunken twentysomething transplants from Ohio and Michigan slurring their way through the song after a game.

It needs to be retired immediately.

Seamus, as a Sox fan I'll point out the Sox have the Go, Go White Sox song from 1959. They resurrected it in 2005 (I've never heard at any games prior to that year). It's not the best song either, but it's less cheesy than the Blackhawks song and a heck of a lot better than Go Cubs Go. At least the Blackhawks and the Sox songs are more peppy than Go Cubs Go.

Go Cubs Go is a terribly annoying song. Hopefully, the Ricketts family will feel the same way and just get rid of it once and for all. Its a cheesy middle school cheerleading song that literally makes me turn off the TV when it starts. horrible

"Yea, Hey, blow away. The Lincoln Park Pirates are we. From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothing so harry and we always collect our fee."

I always hated the "Go, Cubs, Go" song. And I am a Cubs fan. It's just way to cheesy. Kind of like "We are the Hawks, the mighty Blackhawks".

"Lincoln Park Pirates" and "City of New Orleans" are great songs. I was at Wrigley for the Jimmy Buffett concert over Labor Day of '05. He did a cover of "City of New Orleans" the gave me chills. It was right after Hurricane Katrina.

Ya know, that Post Office has one of the worst customer service records of all Chicago Post Offices.

Sorta like the Cubs failure to get into the World Series year after year after year!

Why do people write the phrase, "hate ON this man"? We don't "hate ON people" we just plainly hate. What's with the extra preposition? I also think John Prine, Goodman's friend, should sing the song live, even though Prine is from Maywood, or worked there I think.

while the man who wrote GO CUBS GO deserves some remembrance his work deserves no such posterity. It should be buried somewhere back-of-the-yards and never performed again. period.

People hating on Steve Goodman, watch that video. The man was a Chicago treasure

your grandpappy slap happy on March 17, 2010 4:36 AM

READ THIS! What this doesn't say is that Goodman wrote go, cubs, go as a joke. wgn asked him to write a song about the cubs, so he wrote a dying cubs fan's last request. they thought it was too depressing, so he wrote 'go, cubs, go' tongue in cheek in 1984 and died before he could see the cubs choke as they are generally known to do. don't hate on this man for writing that stupid song. he wrote 'city of new orleans,' and unbelievable song and part of americana.

Why a post office?
While struggling to become a pro songwriter,Steve Goodman,
a graduate of Maine East High School, worked at the Park Ridge Post Office. The Lakeview Post Office is probably the closest to Wrigley Field. GO CUBS GO !

I never heard a song like this about the White Sox. Then again, they don't drive their fans to an early grave or total madness. Goodman could have lived to 102 and still never see his Cubbies in a World Series

That truly is one of the worst songs that I have ever heard. It's worse than the "Super Bowl Shuffle".

No. Awful song. Represents all that is wrong with Cubs fans. The Cubs are going to win today? Win what, exactly??

Spare me. I'd rather watch that tape from The Ring...

Great song. Terrible comment.

Terrible. Terrible song.
