DePaul willing to pay for top coaching candidates

DePaul launched its basketball coaching search over the weekend and is willing to pay top dollar to lure candidates, many of whom are about to begin coaching in the NCAA tournament.

The program has a "robust" list of potential candidates who will be considered, but athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto stressed the desire to find someone with head-coaching experience in a power conference or a successful mid-major program to replace Jery Wainwright, who was released in January.

Interim coach Tracy Webster is a candidate, Ponsetto said when she met with reporters Tuesday.

"First and foremost, our goal is for someone who can come in and be succesful in the Big East conference," Ponsetto said. "That includes someone who can not only recruit, which is a high priority both locally and nationally, but also we need someone who has the technical acumen who can coach it up with the likes of the future Hall of Famers of the Big East conference."

You made the decision to take a mediocre Division I basketball program and throw it to the "Lions" who play in the Big East, the very best basketball conference in the land? What did this person think would happen? Winning one conference game this year is a major surprise. Last years results weren't much better. Who made the decision to play home games 20 miles away from campus in front of maybe 1,000 fans per night ? Who thinks that throwing a lot of money at some coach is going to raise a near dead basketball program from the dead ? What respectable coach would even take such an obviously lose-lose situation? Her name is Jean Ponsetto, and she doesn't know a damn thing about Division I Men's Basketball.

How about DePaul leaving the Big East conference? The Big East is too much for DePaul to handle.

DePaul needs to come back to Conference USA. Okay it is not a power conference but competitive enough to the point that Conference USA has a good reputation.
