Bulls' broken record: Shorthanded at practice

After taking Saturday off, the banged-up Bulls returned to the Berto Center practice court Sunday. However, Derrick Rose and Luol Deng only participated in limited non-contact drills, and coach Vinny Del Negro said even that didn't go well for Deng.

"He was struggling," Del Negro said of Deng's strained right calf. "He couldn't push off very well."

Though the Bulls have a rare three days off between games, that makes Deng doubtful for Tuesday's game in Memphis. The Bulls have lost a season-high seven straight games.

Del Negro said Rose's sprained left wrist is improving. However, no determination about his playing status has been made.

The Bulls definitely will be without guard Kirk Hinrich, who was suspended one game without pay for bumping official Bennie Adams in Friday's loss to the Heat in Miami.

In his first public comments since the incident, Hinrich told reporters he conveyed to NBA security officials that he believed Adams initiated the contact.

"I was just following him," Hinrich said. "I was still upset. He turned and stuck his elbow out and kind of bumped into me. And I realized I better leave."

Del Negro said Joakim Noah also participated in limited non-contact drills. But Noah isn't expected to play all week as he continues to battle plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The Bulls begin four games in five nights Tuesday in Memphis.
