Brewers GM calls Cubs' tax 'competitive edge'

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports: Count Brewers general manager Doug Melvin among those opposed to the "Cubs tax" that would add a surcharge on all Cactus League tickets to help fund a new spring-training complex in Mesa for the North Siders.

"My point, and I've talked to other GMs about this, is why should we pay for another team?" Melvin said. "I don't care if it's the Cubs or not. That's a competitive edge."

Someone should ask Doug Melvin why the Cubs shouldn't get more of the gate when they play in Milwaukee since the stands are filled with Cub fans. The simple fact is that every other team playing in AZ makes more money with the Cubs there. The Brewers should be thankful the Cubs are in AZ and should be happy to help keep them there.

It's not the Cubs fault that no one outside of Milwaukee cares about the Brewers.

From the same GM who can pay his players with money from Cub fans who fill his stands when we play at Miller park. The Cubs are a driving force in Mesa's economy, and Doug, you aren't paying for the tickets, its the fans.

It's 43 degrees down here, my wife and 3 kids have spent $2,100 for 6 days, 5 nights, two rainouts, no golf (too cold) and a rental car that I could have BOUGHT for the price we paid.

Sunday they didn't cancel the Sox game until we paid for parking and bought food.

Mr. Ricketts do you hear me? Clark Griswold wouldn't put up with this *****. Move to Florida NOW!

Rock on, Doug!! The Cubs are constant whiners- whether its in Chicago or Arizona. At least Arizona only has to deal with it for 1 month a year.

Fine then, Doug. But when the Cubs leave for Florida and the Cactus League attendance numbers significantly drop off don't go asking MLB for a bailout. After all, why should they have to pay for your team's inability to bring fans in like the Cubs were able to?

To Doug Melvin and other GM's. Who Should pay for this? Are you suggesting hard working tax payers who do not go to baseball games should pay for this? It is time baseball teams and other professional sports teams took care of their own and stop being parasites on the rest of the world.
