swissblog.jpgVANCOUVER--The United States has controlled much of the play but couldn't solve Switzerland goaltender Jonas Hiller in a scoreless first period of a quarterfinal game Wednesday at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

The Americans hold an 18-4 shot advantage and have had several prime scoring chances denied by Hiller. The Blackhawks' Patrick Kane had his best opportunity with a backhander with just under four minutes remaining in the first but Hiller was up to the task. A minute later, Phil Kessel rifled a shot off the post.

Ryan Miller is in goal for the United States. The winner will play in Friday's semifinals. Canada and Russia will play later Wednesday at Canada Hockey Place.
