Young was asked if the Cutler-Mike Martz marriage would work. The Bears hired Martz as their new offensive coordinator.
"It will help," Young said. "Mike is more of a technician of a QB than
people realize and that's what Jay needs. He needs parenting, he needs
guardrails, he needs structure, all of those things being the same
thing. He leaks oil the way he plays. The ball flies around a little
bit, and he's got to be more careful.
"You saw it. He lost a lot of games for the team. He can't do that. He is a good player and he can be a great player, if they can put enough structure around him and force him to his footwork to how he throws and reads the defense and where he puts the football. Not a straight jacket, but structure, and I think Mike Martz, hopefully, will give him that."
Young believes Martz won't stand for any nonsense.
"He is a guy that in the middle of his drop in practice will stop practice and tell him that foot work will lose football games, that decisions will lose football games;" Young said. "As long as Mike stays on top of him and really, again, parents him properly, I think that Jay has a chance to really blossom."

Notice how Cutler wasn't getting any of this intense criticism about "needing to improve" when he was in Denver?!?! Oh, that's right, he had a decent offensive line & good, productive play-calling!
While I respect Montana, Aikman & Young & their Hall of Fame Status, they need to address the criticism where it is truly deserved---Bears Coaching, Angelo & Ownership! After-all, none of these Hall of Famers were taking these jabs @ Cutler 2 years ago!
Joe - you are correct. Double standard is the word when it comes to Cutler. The hilarious thing is these dumb arses don't even acknowledge they are doing it. Even funnier is that they don't think we notice they are doing it.
Young could have been cool and if he had some wise-been-there-advise to give to Cutler he could have done it privately instead of throwing Jay under the bus to the media. I have lost some respect for Young.
Man I needed one more ex-QB to take his shots at my quarterback. As a transitioned Denver fan to a Bear fan, I am getting quite sick of this. It is surely a good thing that cutler could care less what other people say about him and all that matters to him is winning. If his defense gives up 52, he is going to do everything he can to score 53. If he makes a bad decision, he will shake it off and come right back 100 miles an hour.
Here is the real problem I have and it is the double standard.. By now we all saw Favre's last through as a pro when he was rolling right and threw back across his body. Result INT and game loser. What I have a problem with is when Favre makes that throw critics and guys like Steve Young say the guy is just trying to make a play. If Jay makes that throw, he is an idiot and the worst decision making QB in history..
Can't wait until next year. If the D takes care of business, Cutler is going to put 30+ a game on the board with Martz and the continuity he builds with Devin, Devin, Earl, and Johnny Knox this offseason. He did it with Marshall, Royal, and Scheffler in Denver and he will do it again this year..
There are fans who get it!
The talking heads do not get it!
ON THE MONEY PETER!
ON THE MONEY DENNIE!
THERE ARE FANS WHO GET IT!
Having watched every pro game that Cutler has played, the Bears stink and I mean they stink!!!!! The Broncos defense was also terrible in every game Jay played in. The Bears and their fans need to get off his back and build a team around him like all good teams in the league do. The press is Chicago need to get off his back....I would hope for Jay that they trade him to Washington...
Wow Steve Young, a little harsh ya think? Don't you remember you didn't do so hot in the 4th year of your career either?
As much as I respect your HOF status, you can give constructive criticism and offer practical advice without showing your Cutler-hate so much.

Ain't that the truth.

If Martz can adjust to his personnel the bears will light it up!
Please add a couple offensive linemen.
Cutler has twice the instincts of mcmahon.
Jay was the only reason the bears had a chance to win in a lot of games.
I saw favre fall apart in the carolina game. Gee. He was under heavy pressure, running attack was ineffective and the d was giving up points.
Guess what? Cutler played in this scenario almost every week.
I see some fans really get it.
Steve,
I am sure you would have said the same thing about P Manning who threw 100 ints in his first 5 years. The talking heads seemed to enjoy beating up on cutler this year without even really watching the games.
I didn't hear any of the talking heads say how great cutler played in the win against the vikes (4 td passes), one of the top defenses in the league. But the announcers in that game barely acknowledged the bonehead throws favre made as if they didn't even happen. Example. Late in the game favre throws into double coverage and the ball bounces off of the bears chest. The announcer, jaworski BARELY whispers "he shouldn't have thrown that one". The sidekick announcers just ignored this terrible throw as if it didn't happen. This was the last drive and the vikes tied the game forcing overtime.
Mike ditka and michael irvin in a show barely whispered "Jay didn't have much to work with". I know it wasn't the popular view to appreciate what cutler had brought to the bears week in and week out. Cutler was tough and he gave a below average team a chance to win.
With one or two offensive lineman the bears will light it up.

He stares down his receivers too much and does not know how to scan the field.
Wrong. Jay did a good job of looking off defenders & throwing the ball the opposite way last year, watch the tape. Did he stare down some recievers? Yes, but I would say that was more a product of pressure, desperation and just trying too hard to make things happen. Won't be the case at all next year, he'll relax in a great system and blossom.
Martz and his giant ego and The JayBaby and his giant ego won't even be speaking to each other by the end of the season - another LOSING season.
Agree, you are either born with it or you are not. He stares down his receivers too much and does not know how to scan the field. Cutler has one season to prove his worth or he will be run out of Chicago at the end of next season.
I'd prefer to believe two HOF quarterbacks instead of Jim McMahon. He had the attitude and spunk like a good QB, but that's about it.

Jim Mcmahon said it best.a qb must have instincts and that is some thing that can not be taught not even by Martz.
