Shani Davis' self-coaching strategy questioned

shanidavis-ap.JPGUSA Today reports: Olympic and world-champion speedskater Shani Davis is essentially his own coach. He trains mostly with the U.S. short-track team and keeps a detailed notebook of his practice sessions and races.

"I don't know if there's anybody (else) who coaches himself at an elite level, in really any sport," says Eric Heiden, who won five speedskating gold medals in 1980 and is now an orthopedic surgeon and the US Speedskating team doctor. "It's unusual that somebody can have that sort of feedback from their bodies, that they know how to put together a training program."

But one of his former coaches, Bob Fenn, thinks Davis' solo approach is "dead wrong."

"It tears me up inside to see him out there just by himself," Fenn said.
