Northern Illinois assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator Jeff Phelps is taking special pride in helping direct Crete-Monee all-state linebacker Greg Barksdale to the DeKalb campus.
Barksdale is a 6-2, 210-pound standout from University Park.
Phelps happens to be a Crete-Monee product who was delighted to have Barksdale visit the NIU campus on an unofficial visit during the season. That certainly cut down on NIU's recruiting expenses.
Phelps also helped land Morgan Park's 6-1, 185-pound wide receiver Da'Ron Brown. Phelps tried several times to reach Brown by phone Tuesday to gather information for Wednesday's new conference. He later discovered that Brown had the day off from school and had volunteered to assist at an election site in Chicago.
