Jones to handle Sox's DH duties vs. lefties

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Andruw Jones will get most of the at-bats as designated hitter against left-handed pitchers and bat in the middle of the order, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said after Tuesday's workout.

"I hope he (stays) in the middle of the lineup, and hopefully that works out," Guillen said. "If he's playing every day, it means he's doing a good job.''

For now, this means that Mark Kotsay will get the bulk of at-bats against right-handed pitchers. Guillen also didn't rule out Omar Vizquel batting leadoff as a DH against tough left-handed pitchers, meaning Juan Pierre would get a break.

Simple, joeynach. Ozzie puts a premium on hitting and not homeruns... as well he should. The idea is to string together high percentage hits in your lineup, and even though he was acquired as a heavy bat you don't sacrifice efficiency for perceived power. As LaRussa once put it (paraphrasing) you make a line up to get hits, and you let the big ones come to you. Yhe idea is that a certain number of his hits will end up over the fence because of his power, but it has a lot more to do with the speed, movement and placement of the ball and Andruw's timing than whether he goes against a lefty or righty. You want him making contact as much as possible, bottom line. Chasing home runs as a manager makes about as much sense as it does for a fan in the upper deck.

What the heck is Ozzie talking about. Just look at Andruw Jones' split stats, not only in 2009 but for his entire career the bulk of his power comes from hitting RIGHT HANDED PITCHING. When he hits against Lefties his BA and OBP go up very slightly but his power goes way down. So WTF is ozzie talking about, we got Jones because he hit 17 HR's in 281 AB's last year. We want good power production for someone making $500,000, then bat him against Righties for the most part. Give him 500 AB's and lets say 300 against righties, thats like 24HR's given his 2009 stats.
