PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Tiger Woods is to return to therapy after he speaks publicly for the first time about his infidelity, according to a letter from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem that was obtained by The Associated Press.
Finchem's letter to the PGA Tour policy board and other officials explained why Woods chose Friday to make his first public comments, which are to be televised live by all the major networks.
Woods' statement comes during the Match Play Championship, sponsored by Accenture, the first company to drop Woods as a pitchman.
"As we understand it, Tiger's therapy called for a week's break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning," Finchem said in a letter Thursday. "Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement."

Woods is to speak at 10 a.m. CT from the clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour.
The letter shed no light on whether Woods plans to return to the tour anytime soon.

I would have admired Woods so much if he had opened his remarks with something along the lines of "I deeply regret that so many Americans have such small, petty lives that they hate that I'm enjoying mine."
He gave the best "I'm really sorry speech" his billions could buy. Whether people like it or not - he will be back to his namesake sport: golf.
I liked that he invited only those closest to him, and I liked that he addressed his apologies only to them, to other business associates and those that had actually been affected by his behaviour. He doesn't owe the rest of us anything at all by way of apology...it is not our business. I am glad he is back, I love watching him play golf. What he gets up to in his personal life is of absolutely no concern to me, and I'm confused by the public outrage from those who aren't affected by it in the slightest.
I am amazed at how many perfect people read the Tribune. WGN must really have stood for We're God's Newspaper.
Get over it. He made a mistake; many, many mistakes; many, many times. The only question I have is, will he learn from it? He didn't wrong me; he wronged his wife and family. I am disappointed that he acted as he did, but we all make mistakes. If he ends up learning from this experience, I won't feel any shame or guilt about rooting for him again, just as I have in the past.
No one believes Woods, but at least it takes Barry Obama and his band of socialists off the front page for a day.
This guy is a jerk, but he's still a freakingly good golfer.
And in the end, when he goes back to the golf course, chances are he'll still be pretty good.
He is a first class JERK.
Cheeta woods leaving golf was the best thing that could happen. The commentators have been fored to talk about the other golfers who play just as hard as woods. I fear that if this jerk returns, they will revert back to worshiping woods!!! Remember people woods is not God or even a god!!!
I agree completely with Rocket Man. Especially with regard to numbers 1 and 3.
Four things need to happen soon:
1) Tiger Woods go away soon.
2) Dick Vitale go away very soon.
3) Sarah Palin go away very, very soon.
4) Russ Limbaugh... (you fill it in. mine would be unprintable).
I think there are a lot of people who like him better now than before the scandal. Come on, he always seemed like such a dork. Now, not only is he the best golfer in the world, but quite the skirt chaser as well. Probably not the image for Buick though.
he's an idiot, he deserves the unhappiness he has created for himself.
The grass looked greener on the other side of the fence, to Tiger. He just better to remember to "man up" tomorrow. If he tells the truth about his mistakes, it will become part of his past. If he lies, it will become part of his future.
