White Sox to reinforce efforts in Latin America

Less than two years after firing three members of the Latin American operations, the White Sox plan to reinvest in that market.

''With all the problems we've had over there, and whether those problems were the result of those problems are something that didn't enable us to get the players we need to get, or whether we just aren't doing a good job over there, we need to get better at,'' scouting director Doug Laumann said Sunday morning.

''We're going to make a commitment for a little bit of time to add some resources, some manpower and get it better over there.''
The Sox fired David Wilder, their senior director of player personnel, and scouts Victor Mateo and Domingo Toribio, in the wake of investigations in the Dominican Republic. A major league source told the Tribune in May of 2008 that the dismissals were due to the skimming of bonuses that were targeted for players..

Pitcher Clevelan Santeliz and catcher Miguel Gonzalez, the Sox's ninth and 10th top prospects ranked by Baseball America, were signed out of Venezuela before the firings.

''We definitely need to get more production out of the Dominican,'' Laumann said. ''We need to tap that resource more than we had.''
