With the 2009 season finished, the Bears won't waste any time fashioning plans for next year.
That is what the meeting at Halas Hall Monday between Lovie Smith, Jerry Angelo and other members of the organization's hierarchy will be about.
Once the coaching staff is settled, the Bears will begin a roster makeover that is sure to happen. Angelo has made it clear he likes the young nucleus of the team. Twelve of the 61 players on the roster (53-man and injured reserve) are coming out of contract. However, only special teamer Darrell McClover, defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, running back Adrian Peterson and linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will be unrestricted free agents.
The wild card for four players is the collective bargaining agreement. If there is an extension, which right now no one expects, defensive end Mark Anderson, safety Josh Bullocks, nickel back Danieal Manning and linebacker Jamar Williams will be unrestricted. In the event there is no extension, they will be restricted free agents, meaning the Bears will have the chance to control their rights.
Here is a list of when the contracts expire for the players on the roster:
After 2009 season
Mark Anderson, Kahlil Bell**, Josh Bullocks, Danieal Manning, Darrell McClover, Adewale Ogunleye, Adrian Peterson, Nick Roach*, Tim Shaw**, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Matt Toeaina**, Jamar Williams.
After 2010 season
Anthony Adams, Devin Aromashodu, Brett Basanez, Josh Beekman, Desmond Clark, Rashied Davis, Corey Graham, Caleb Hanie, Kevin Jones, Olin Kreutz, Pat Mannelly, James Marten, Brad Maynard, Richmond McGee, Kevin Payne, Garrett Wolfe.
After 2011 season
Earl Bennett, Zack Bowman, Alex Brown, Kellen Davis, Matt Forte, Roberto Garza, Marcus Harrison, Hunter Hillenmeyer, Israel Idonije, Jason McKie, Greg Olsen, Orlando Pace, Kevin Shaffer, Craig Steltz, Woodny Turenne.
After 2012 season
Gaines Adams, Al Afalava, Jarron Gilbert, Tommie Harris, Juaquin Iglesias, Johnny Knox, Lance Louis, Henry Melton, D.J. Moore, Frank Omiyale, Brian Urlacher, Nathan Vasher, Chris Williams.
After 2013 season
Lance Briggs, Jay Cutler, Robbie Gould, Devin Hester, Charles Tillman.
* Restricted free agent; ** Exclusive rights free agent
NOTE: In the event the collective bargaining agreement is not extended by March, Anderson, Bullocks, Manning and Williams will be restricted free agents.

I think Lovie stays and gives up his Defensive duties to Marinelli. Ron Turner and offensive assts are let go....Bears hire Jeremy Bates as new OC/QB coach and bring in a PRO level offensive assts for the O-Line (Joe Bugel, Russ Grimm, Alex Gibbs), WRs, and RBs..........
My special request to Jerry Angelo: PLEASE GET RID OF DARRYL DRAKE!!!
Players that have played their last snaps as Bears are : Ogunleye, Vasher, Pace, Kreutz, Garza, Jones, Rashied Davis, McClover, Bullocks, Peterson, Tinoisamoa, Toeaina, Graham, Woulfe, and McKie.
And these players will get released witout playing a snap: Louis, Melton, Turenne, and Iglesias.
I say all 4 of the unrestricted free agents need to be let go. There is nothing of value in any of the 4. Adrian Peterson's contributions this year have been special teams penalties, Ogunleye is overpriced for a guy who only averages 6 sacks per year, Tinoisamoa has had trouble staying healthy the last few seasons, which means he is less likely to make it through full seasons as he gets older, and McClover is un-necessary with the emergence of Shaw as our special teams stud.
Pace, Vasher, and Kreutz will likely be the next guys to be let go. I think Angelo is going to make a power play with this squad and take control back from the players, and dumping Kreutz in favor of Beekman will be his first move. We will likely draft a center this year, but Beekman is the first option.
The next wave depends on how aggressively they want to turn over this roster. If they want to overhaul, and move away from the Tampa 2, thinking Lovie will not be getting an extension after 2010, then they should consider trading/dumping Tommie Harris, and either Urlacher or Briggs. Briggs has trade value, and can be "the guy" on another team, either in the middle, or outside. Urlacher would just be a salary dump, and then someone would sign him off the street. Tommie Harris is only a part time player as it is, and is not terribly effective any more, so that would also be a salary dump.
With the emergence of Kahlil Bell, Garrett Wolfe is on thin ice in my opinion. Despite being a 3rd round draft pick (still think it was an even worse pick than Okwo), he is not able to have much impact as a backup runner, and we need someone who is strong enough to break an arm tackle. We should sign a free agent or draft someone late to be the 3rd running back next year.
Guys we need to retain from this year's free agent group: Danieal Manning (KO returns), Jamar Williams (need him at LB if we move Briggs or release Urlacher), Anderson (played his best when Wale was out), and Matt Toeaina (run stuffer that hasn't gotten time in this scheme).
Hey, Woodny is a CB and I heard he can keep up with Hester and Knox when it comes to speed. Haven`t seen much, but I look forward to seeing him in the future, and how about Tim Shaw! he`ll surley be wasted talent if he stays in chicago as long as Lovie and Angelo are around.
Brad,
Good analysis. I guess we all wish there was someone we trusted with the Bears to make good personnel decisions, good player utilization, and good player development. Right now, based on the track record of the last 4 years, there is no one. Angelo and his people have failed. Smith and his coaches have failed. Right now it appears that nothing that happens in the next few days will correct this. I do not think I have ever looked forward to the next season for the Bears with so little hope.
Lovie's boy Orlando Pace was hurt too much, time to hang em up permanently.
Who?
