Reed Johnson still in Cubs' outfield picture

Don't throw away your "With Reed We Will Succeed" T-Shirt just yet, Ted Lilly.

The Cubs still are interested in re-signing popular outfielder Reed Johnson, whom Lilly campaigned for last September by wearing the aforementioned T-shirt.

A fourth outfielder is the priority right now, and the Cubs are looking for a right-handed hitter to platoon with Kosuke Fukudome. Johnson and Xavier Nady both fit the bill, and both of their price tags figure to shrink as spring training nears.

"Reed is in the mix," assistant general manager Randy Bush said Wednesday at the Cubs Caravan kickoff luncheon at Harry Caray's restaurant. "Reed is doing what he should do and seeing what else is out there.

"Reed's main thing is playing time. Reed wants to play. You can't fault a guy for that. Reed wants to make sure he exhausts the possibilities that include significant playing time. We love Reed. We'd love to have him back. We'll see how it plays out."

Nada surf? The band?

Way to go, Bob. Your last post was so nasty they deleted it! And I typed that big old response to a post that isn't there anymore!

Ok, calm down Bob, just having a little fun with ya! Not that I need to explain myself, but I'm closer to 30 than 20 and I'm married (not to a man!)and have 2 kids. And yes, all those ladies you mentioned were pretty hot back in the day. You gotta understand how bad you're dating yourself mentioning all those dead actresses in the same sentence with Jolie, though. Imagine if when you were in your 20's talking about how hot Donna Reed is and then some old man steps in and talks about how he's never heard of her and proclaims some chick born in 1875 is hotter. BUT I DIGRESS! The reason I'm not defending myself saying Reed Johnson will never steal 40 bases and hit 20 homers is everybody already did that and you won't listen to reason, so whats the point? If you don't want to look up stats and want to rely on your own Reed Johnson dillusions, than be my guest. All I know is Reed himself would look at you like your nuts if you ran your predicions by him. He has never come anywhere close to those kind of numbers in his career. There's no reasonable indication that he will in the future either. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Reed back but I wouldn't get my hopes up for 40 SBs or 20 HRs. More like 15 and 10 with great clubhouse presence and solid defense.

Marilyn Monroe and Donna Reed?! They are worm food! Geez Bob! Nobody is disrespecting you because of your age. Your baseball comments are rediculous and your about 60 years late on your choice of woman. I'd prefer Angelina to exhuming corpses for a romantic encounter, but hey, that's just me. To each his own you sick old fart!

Xavier nady is better.Cubs should sign him.

at least kicking the tires on sheets certainly can't be a bad idea...is it just me, or should the cubs be looking into signing miguel tejada? maybe they are. last year he hit well over .300 in day games and on grass, and could fill the SS gap well until castro is (hopefully) ready. tejada doesn't strike out much either - which would be welcome in the cubs' lineup. we could move theriot to second, where he could become a very good 2nd baseman, as opposed to a very average SS....

and PS - we have a centerfielder who was just signed a couple of weeks ago.

You're going to re-think that statement in a few months.

Thanks Bob. I thought Maude was pretty hot too. After the operation of course, when she changed from Claude.
There is talk of Reed Johnson and Jermaine Dye being signed. They both have their merits, but if RJ is healthy, he can be a much better asset. Decent lead off man when starting, late inning sub in left, pinch runner, pinch hitter. To me, Dye is a better fit for the AL, but the power he would bring is intriguing. 9 games at DH, 15-20 starts at first, 10-15 starts in right, and power pinch hitter off the bench. Yes, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Bob is either trolling or he is just being sarcastic.

Regardless... I feel the need, the need for Reed.

Reed is a fighter - albeit a fragile one. We need fighters. Go on Jim, do something good for a change - make Reed the fourth outfielder... and fast!

Ban Bob Locher...

...and the day Reed Johnson swipes 40 bases will be the day I get to meet Angelina Jolie and invite her out to get drunk and "hug". I'd like Reed back myself, but he will never on his best day be as good as Holliday. Give credit where it's due and not where it isn't!

"Who the hell is Angelina Jolie anyway? I don't listen to the crap that is being played on the radio now." posted by boblocker LOL! Let me ask you this Bob, how long has it been since you were a spring chicken? 1930 or so? Angelina isn't a singer, she's an actress...and possibly the hottest female on the planet...just so you know :)

bob you're an idiot. think before you write

Reed Johnson has also never hit more than 12 HR's in a season, that season he played in 134 games. Sorry, Bob, without being too mean please stop talking about baseball to anyone, you might be one the reasons everyone hates Cubs fans... Drunks who think we are just one Reed Johnson away from ebding over 100 years of losing.

Bob... sorry man, I have tried to understand where you are coming from but I cannot. Please look at the stats... in 6 seasons Matt Holliday has stolen 80 bases, in 7 seasons, one more than Holliday, Reed Johnson has stolen 35. In fact in Johnson's first 4 full-time seasons with Toronto he played 531 games and only stole 24 bases, never stealing more than 8 in a season.

Wow... please look up & compare Johnson's vs. Holliday's stats Bob... I like to use www.baseballreference.com
I like Reed Johnson too, he makes highlight catches and is a tough scrappy player. But as mentioned below, we just did sign Byrd. We do need a guy that can play the outfield and hit a little too. I personally like Sam Fuld, he is just as scrappy as Johnson and probably would come much cheaper, although he is a lefty. I do agree with Bob on Bea Arthur being hot back in the day though.

Bob, you're a tool. Reed is a back-up/platoon player for any competing team. Sure, we all like him, but comparing him to Holliday is like comparing Bea Arthur to Angelina Jolie.

Oops, Mike S., you flew under the sarcasm radar so deftly positioned by Bob. LOL, that was pretty obvious. The main thing that concerns me about Reed Johnson is his fragility. That said, he's just a great guy who goes all out so I hope wherever he lands he stays healthy. Hoffpauir doesn't inspire me much, I'd rather see Nagy come off the bench.

Micha is still with the cubs. Only fox got traded with miles to okland for J.Grey and prospects.
Reed needs to come back but if were going to have 5 OF then on of are 3 infield would have to go:
OF SOREiano, Fukodome, Byrd=(, Fuld thats what we got now and if johson comes back then Sam Fuld might be out of options. Anyway The cubs need Reed to come back
Rember "With Reed We Will Succeed"

Look, I like Reed as much as the next guy, but to compare him to Holliday or say he puts the Cubs over the top in their race against the Cards is a little over the top itself. He makes a nice back up for sure and can step in and start as well, But i think Nady has more power, which I like having on the bench in pinch hitting situations. Who else do we have that can hit HRs off the bench? Weren't Micah and Jake traded? I think Nady is the better fit overall.

Bob Locker on January 13, 2010 2:16 PM

Please oh please tell me Reed Johnson is coming back. We have to offset the Cardinals getting Holliday. To me getting Johnson is just as big. He will hit and is a better fielder than Holliday. Also Reed Johnson can play center and Holliday can't and can't steal bases. This move should put the Cubs over the top and I can't wait for this weekend to get all the autographs and say hello to the Cubbies. Now if we can sign Sheets we will be World Champs.

Love REED! Hope he comes back!
