Maddux says McGwire 'trying to clean up past'

Greg Maddux didn't seem too surprised that Mark McGwire confessed to using steroids Monday after signing on with St. Louis last fall.

"He's going to be hitting coach for the Cardinals now, right?" Maddux said. "Maybe he's just trying to clean up the past a little bit and move forward. I've always had a lot of respect for him as a player. He was one of the most intimidating hitters I've ever faced. He was one of the toughest outs in the game back then.

"There was always speculation that guys were on that stuff. You just do what you can to pitch around them."
