Hue Jackson bypasses Bears for Raiders' job

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Bears' search for an offensive coordinator continues to be an unpredictable process.

Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson, who was headed to Chicago for an interview with the Bears today, was a last-minute scratch and instead has accepted the offensive-coordinator job with the Oakland Raiders.

"I'd been to the Raiders and spent time with (owner Al) Davis and talking to (coach) Tom Cable," Jackson said Tuesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000. "I had worked with Tom. We had worked together in college, and we have very similar thoughts, and the biggest thought is that we want to win. I was very impressed with the time I spent with Mr. Davis, talking about his vision, talking about his vision for me, for the organization and what he is trying to accomplish. It just kind of worked out."

A similiar situation occurred when the Bears set up an interview with then-USC coordinator Jeremy Bates, who pulled out at the last hour after agreeing to join Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks.

"I woke up, and I don't ever want to lead anybody on," Jackson said of his decision to cancel the Bears interview. "Lovie (Smith) is such a great man, and I didn't want to go down there and think I was going to put my all into it when I knew my heart was in California. I'm from California. It's a chance for me to go back home among family and friends and try to do everything I can to help the Raiders get back to where they want to be."

Before helping to develop quarterback Joe Flacco the last two seasons, he was offensive coordinator in Atlanta (2007) and Washington ('03).

The Bears are taking their time interviewing candidates and are in no rush to extend offers, which may have contributed to Jackson's interview status.

The Bears also interviewed Rob Chudzinski, the assistant head coach/tight ends in San Diego, and Ken Zampese, Cincinnati's quarterbacks coach. Chudzinski apparently was content with his current situation, while Zampese was given a week deadline to make a decision after interviewing Jan. 12-13, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told the Tribune.

Green Bay blocked the Bears from meeting with Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.

The Bears could wait until after the Super Bowl and look to pluck a coach from either the Colts or Saints. Clyde Christensen, the Colts' assistant head coach/wide receivers, might be worth monitoring.

Firing Turner and all those coaching underlings yet keeping Lovie Smith, Jerry Angelo and Ted Phillips and Lovie's many pals is a recipe for disaster. Do you honestly think--as lame as he was--Ron Turner was at the heart of the Bears' problem???

Any head coach who insists on pursuing an antiquated defense, can't identify or develop talent, hires his friends and doesn't have the ba**s to fire them when they don't deliver AND stubbornly refuses to adjust the gameplan when he sees IT'S NOT WORKING is no asset to a franchise.

And the people who hired him, who offered him an extension--just as bad. Blame the owners and the management they hired...and FOLLOW ANOTHER TEAM NEXT YEAR.

I have lived in Illinois for the past 10 years now and it is great to see this happen. I don't know "all" Bears fans but the ones I do know can not hold a decent conversation about football. I called it in the beginning of the season that the Cutler trade was a great deal for the Broncos. Trade away a QB that has never had a winning season, went to the probowl by default, and has never taken his team to the playoffs for TWO first round draft picks, Kyle Orton (who played pretty well this past season) and a 3rd round selection. I'm sorry but that was way too much for Cutler. I called that Forte would have a terrible season just like most 2nd year Bear backs do, I also knew the Bears wouldn't make the playoffs with the easiest schedule in the NFL. I know every team has the group of ignorant fans but all the Bears fans I know fit that mold. Right out the chute when the Bears traded for Cutler everyone was talking about Superbowl......not the playoffs.....SUPERBOWL! It was great to see the Bears true colors this year and to see how many gaping holes they have on offense and defense. Without any draft picks to fix those problems the Bears will be at the bottom for a long time to come. Green Bay will take over very soon if not this next coming year and as long as the Vikes have that D and AP you guys will continue to finish 3rd in the division.

A few comments...... First off, when the heck are Bears season ticket holder - and other spending their dough on Bears souvenirs - going to wake up and realize how dysfunctional this organization is? Everybody in the NFL obviously knows it, because the Bears can't even get a qualified NFL-caliber coach to interview with them. What a shame that the once-proud Bears have become the laughingstock of the league. WAKE UP PEOPLE - somebody chose the Raiders over the bears. How sad is that. And I thought the raiders were dysfunctional..... Next; regarding Cutler. ANYBODY that knows a thing about football knows that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have one thing in common that make them winners -- solid offensive lines that give them both time to throw. The last two games, when he wasn't running for his life, Cutler put up pretty respectable numbers and even managed to make a bunch of utter reject receivers look functional. Anybody that thinks it's Cutler's fault has a lot to learn about the game.

congrats to the idiots who suggest that the reason the Bears can't get a coach is because of Cutler. ESPN was blasting the Chicago media for making a comment about this. It's pretty sad when you're the laughing stock of the national sports media.. congrats guys. The reason you can't get a coach is because your organization stinks from the top down, all the way down to the local sports media. Who would want to coach a guy like Cutler? I dunno, pretty sure Mike Shannahan would LOVE to coach him. :P

Those supporting Cutler, forget what kind of season he had, didja? He is directly responsible for at least three losses,at LEAST! He threw to the opposing team as much as he did his own,so yes he IS a problem. No degree of euphymisms supporting him will negate the facts, folks. The record speaks for itself and it's a ugly one indeed. Can he be fixed? With his arrogant attitude,I'd doubt it. Can Lovie fix him? HA! Next.... can we get ANY decent coaches in here that have a clue how to fix him? The question is can we get just ONE decent coach in here that can do anything correct. This will be another wasted year till Lovie is gone and then if God permits,we'll get a real coach and staff in here....Bill Cowher.....

Okay, I've read all of today's blogs on this.....I believe here's what the Bears should do..........

Hire Pamela Anderson as Offensive Coordinator

Hire Jenna Jameson as Defensive Coordinator

Bottom line..............the 2010 Bears won't be competitive, good or even fair..........but EVERYONE will pay attention at their press conferences.

Oops, never mind.............both ladies passed on the Bears' offer and have signed with the Moosejaw Meeces...in the CFL minor-minor league.................

i don't even care about this unknown but it speaks VOLUMES when some unknown will pick just maybe the worst NFL team ever assembled over the bears....what a absolute joke...my favorite team and sport and i can see no real football for a long time....spread the word all u sheep, BOYCOTT THIS CRAP TEAM...but i'm sure all u sheep will be there for training camp etc so it's pointless cause not only does the front office not get it but YOU FANS don't get it either. BOYCOTT!!!

How can Lovie wake up day after day and look at himself in the mirror, and not realize what is going on? He has made a joke of CHICAGO! GET THE HELL OUT!

Hey, stop blaming this whole farce on Cutler. They trade the farm for the guy (not his fault) and give him the most UNimaginative OC in football (not his fault), a running back with a bad knee (not his fault), an old 'O' line that can't pass block OR run block (not his fault) - icing on the cake, not one experienced ROUTE RUNNING RECEIVER - not one! Harrison was there as was Holt for the taking - but NOOOO! Yes, he threw 27 picks and half the time the receiver was going in the opposite direction as the ball. Cutlers a good QB and he didn't get stupid or lame overnight - neither did BEARS MANAGEMENT.

LongtimeBearfanhere....I can't laugh at something so darned comical. When a coach takes a pass on the Chicago Bears, after leaving a very successful organization like Balt. - to go work for the nutjobs of all nutjobs - Al Davis? Then, there IS something seriously wrong with the Bears. What? Don't want to work for Smith? For Angelo? Not enough money? Too cold here? WHAT???? This is why a complete house cleaning was in order. We'd be looking at Shanahan or Cowher and a staff would be in place. Can anyone spell dysfunctional??? Did I get it right? Virginia, still time to get the broom out. Poppa would be P.O.'d

His refusal to not even talk to the Bears and Lovie Smith just goes to show you how dis-respected the Bears are by coaches in the league. Really pathetic to have a reputation around the league that is even worse than the Raiders. Nobody has been worse than the Raiders and potential coaches won't even talk to the Bears front office. This says something about the Bears and it isn't good.

Plain and simple if available most NFL coaches would make the Bears their #1 coaching destination ony after Lovie is gone or given an extension. Lovie has many close friends in the coaching business but business is business. Until Lovie's situation is clarified after this coming season you're going to get a lot of coaches making excuses.

haha...this is hilarious! Great to see the McCaskey's get what they deserve!

NECutlerFan on January 26, 2010 4:49 PM

Cutler threw for the second most yards in Bears history and second most TD's in Bears history while setting records for attempts and completions. What a bum! The Bears had NEVER had 4 receivers with 50 catches and 4 receivers with 500 yards in the same season. All of this with the most predictable offense in the NFL. He is definitely the problem. Not the lame duck coach and GM.

THE PLANE HUE JACKSON WAS ON FLEW PAST CHICAGO AND LANDED IN OAKLAND.I THINK THAT ABOUT SAYS IT ALL.

Chicago has now officially become the worst NFL coaching destination in the league. Thanks Jerry and Lovey for this ignoble position. Your ineptitude has brought us here and will likely take 5-10 years to dig us out of it. Can anyone say Jerry Krause and the 98 Bulls blowup as an example of where we are headed?

The sorry Bears and their Sorry management remind me of the CUBS org. BAD BAD. If I ever have hear crap from Lovie like Rex is our qb.. He said nothing inspiring a real DUD.. How long do we have to watch this BAD ORGANIZATION perform .. Bring in GUYS like Mike Singletary.. How about Doy=ug Buffone for DEfensive coor.. ..

How pathetic. We lose candidates to the worst franchise in the league? There has to be more stability in Bearland than Raider Nation. Are we the ugliest kid in town asking every chick we see to the big dance? Nobody wants to go out with us. We are about to hit rock bottom folks. The good news; there will be nowhere to go but up. Ah, finally; The stench of failure has reached all the far corners of the NFL. Is anyone going to want this stinking job?

ive compared da bears to the browns on more than one occasion this year. never have before, so sad. so sad

penalties, no in game adjustments, bad play calling, players aren't disciplined. all good signs from a coaching staff lol. its such a joke, i hope theyre happy they convinced the 8 morons in chicago that we're actually good. cause no one else believe anything that comes out of lovies mouth.

lovie has fired ron rivera, who was our last D coordinator when our D was good. hired BFF babich, basically fired him the next year but kept him on the payroll cause they're BFFs, good use of bears money. he took over D himself cause hes good at D i guess he thinks, now D is just as bad if not worse than before. now hes no longer D coordinator. he tried and failed miserably, on every level.

oh and im glad his other BFF marinelli lived up to all the hype of evertone talking about how he was a miracle worker and was gonna turn the D line around. haven't heard anything about him since the season started.

everything that happens points to lovie/jerry/every decision maker in the bears organization being a complete joke. its just sad to know theyre lucky to have a fan base thats gonna shell out the dollars to watch the games regardless.

Cutler Haters on January 26, 2010 3:43 PM

You guys that blame the entire season on Cutler are a disgrace!
Cutler did not take out your franchise MLB in week one.
Cutler didn't give Nate Vasher a $25M contract.
Cutler didn't tell Tommie Harris to play like a bum.
Cutler didn't tell he receivers not to finish their routes!
And most importantly, Cutler didn't want to keep Lovie here!

Again, the sky is not falling.

Jackson has had limited success as a coordinator, although he was placed in some bad situations.

There are still a ton of guys out there who have play calling experience, including some of the best offensive coordinators of the past decade in Martz, Bill Callahan and Jim Fassel.

And that doesn't even get to people in college or other assistants.

The Bears are going slowly . . . too slowly . . . but there is no real panic to find a coordinator, especially with Martz waiting on standby.

In other words, I'm not freaking out like some of you are. They will find someone, and that person could be a blessing in disguise.

There are a ton of examples of second or third choices who have gone on to do much better than the original pick.

After all, that is how the Bears ended up with your beloved Ron Rivera. after a lengthy search for a Defensive Coordinator, a person who, BTW, had no play-calling experience.

Chill, people.

Nothing to really get distressed about. Hue Jackson did the right thing by canceling the appointment if he really wanted to go back to California. I'd much rather the Bears try to get a coordinator from one of the Super Bowl teams anyway. The Bears are the Bears. If no pro coach wants to be the offensive coordinator there's always some college coach.

Responding to what a dork on January 26, 2010 9:04 AM

By comparing Bears management to other failed management team does nothing but confirm what you are arguing against.

But you got the idiot with a forum bit right brainless.

There are several comments about management not surviving in the real business world and you call me brainless?

The real genius has finally arrived to this forum.

oh i forgot one more thing cutler had to deal with, worst offensive coordinator and game plans and in game adjustments ive seen. same as last year, same as the year before.

To pretend Cutler is not a huge part of the problem with the current Bears is beyond naive. he will be an albatross on then for years to come and they may take a decade to get over losing those high picks.
A long drought indeed.
----------------------
To think that is moronic. Give us all a break. He was a Pro Bowl QB until he came to the Bears. When was the last time a QB didn't stink in the Chicago system?
-----------------------
wow i cant think of a more perfect word to describe that first statement. moronic. ur right, its cutlers fault are WR are short, we have no O line, no running game, and our "best" offensive weapon is greg olsen who is OK i guess. we're talking about things that make a QBs job easier or harder, and i think we're near the bottom of the league in the most important categories to help a QB: O-line, run game, and receivers. gg. wat do u want him to do

This is disturbing for two reasons:

1. Oakland and Chicago have the same job security for an assistant.
2. Hue Jackson would rather work with JaMarcus Russell than Jay Cutler.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON IN LAKE FOREST???!!!

Just hire Martz and get it over with. He wants the job and has more experience than these other guys anyway. Plus, nobody else seems to want to come into a situation where Lovie only has one year left. Come on Bears, you are looking ridiculous losing out on coaches as they choose the Raiders over Chicago....wow!

Not to stir the pot but.

Lovie Smith Quotes from the worst press confrence ever.

"How are we going to convince someone to come here to coach the Chicago Bears, our offensive positions, defensive positions?" Smith said. "Believe me, people will want to come here."

"Coaches don’t deal in long-term commitments and things like that. It’s about getting the job done right away. There will be a lot of candidates that will come and want to be a part of what we’re going to do next year."

"We have a good nucleus of players here that they all see,"

"I think a defensive guy would want to come here and coordinate a defense with a guy like Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, and guys like that, and fix some of the third downs. I think he is going to look at and he’s not going to see a lot of big holes, he’s going to look at us tightening up a couple bolts to get back. Somebody will want to do that."

"I know some may disagree, but I believe that the fastest way to improve is to keep the continuity that we’ve had with both Jerry Angelo as our general manager and Lovie Smith as our head coach," said Phillips.

That would be the well established non playoff continuity. Perhaps Phillips can hire a outside organization to find a coordinator for them.

I am with you James P. Firing Lovie and Angelo is the only Plausible solution. Ted Philips should be fired too.

Nobody wants to join the Bears staff because the head coach is probably gone next year. They want job security more than one year. Philips should have fired Angelo and Smith at the end of the season. Cowher said he'd be inteterested in the Bears job, but they didn't bother going after him. Shame on them. Guaranteed lousy season again next season. We may not even had an Offensive coordinator. That should be interested. Looks like they're going to have to settle for Martz.

I am with you James P. Firing Lovie and Angelo is the only Plausible solution. Ted Philips should be fired too.

Not too late to fire Lovie and Angelo!!!

its just sad, there is currently no hope for the future. we finally get a QB and this is the direction we're going in? so sad. i wish there was something we could do. unfortunately i think it would be hard to get everyone to boycott games. so so sad

I think the biggest problem is coming in is where Lovie will be gone after the season. They don't want to come here on a 1 year contract possibly.

ChicagoTim on January 26, 2010 2:12 PM

Un-freakin'-believable! Why doesn't anyone want to be a coordinator and work with Lovie? Is Lovie a jerk and we just don't know it or is he really a control freak and nobody with any intelligence wants to put themselves in that position? Is it Jerry Angelo? Does Angelo want to make all of the personnel calls and any good coordinator can see the flaw with that situation? Is it the whole organization? It is mind-boggling to think anyone would choose Oakland over Chicago. Let's not forget to mention Seattle or the NY Giants! I can understand San Diego, but Oakland...really?! The once great franchise known as The Monsters of the Midway has been turned into an abyss where coaches and coordinators are terrified to go! Marinelli will be promoted to defensive coordinator and Mike Tice will wind up being the offensive coordinator because they are the only guys that will work in the present regime! It's very sad to see what the Chicago Bears organization has become.

There is still time to Fire Lovie and Angelo. Grab Cowher or Frazier or Rivera. Its obvious that nobody wants to work with or for a lame duck coach and one that is so damn stubborn he cannot even get position coaches to take a promotion to become the OC. What a joke. No wonder they got Tice, he seen the writing on the wall and figured he would be handed the keys to the clunker of an offense. Unable to bring in a DC as well. Yet the Bears care less as to what seems to be a crumbling franchise.

Can the Bears' owners FINALLY GET IT?????? As long as they keep "albatross" Lovie around as Head Coach with everyone knowing that he will be fired after next year unless the Bears win the Super Bowl, they can't expect to get even a 5th grade flag football coach to come to Chicago in either Coordinator position.......

Make up your mind, McCaskeys.......do you want to put an NFL team on the field with a chance to compete in 2010 or do you want to "reward" all of your faithful fans with a piece of trash team led by a lame duck loser?

Hey Virginia.....SELL THE F******* TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sick and tired of u making BANK off the chicago bears ruining football for 100, 000 thousands if not millions of chicago bears fans!!!!!!

BOYCOTT this CRAP TEAM!!!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

i don't even care about this unknown but it speaks VOLUMES when some unknown will pick just maybe the worst NFL team ever assembled over the bears....what a absolute joke...my favorite team and sport and i can see no real football for a long time....spread the word all u sheep, BOYCOTT THIS CRAP TEAM...but i'm sure all u sheep will be there for training camp etc so it's pointless cause not only does the front office not get it but YOU FANS don't get it either. BOYCOTT!!!

well....if that old HAG virginia was in a retirement home rather than running the Chicago Bears than maybe just maybe we would have a front office that was actually capable of making big boy decisions. What should have happen is simple...fire Angelo, Phillips and the entire coaching staff...bring in Cowher and let him make all the decisions...bill cowher out on the market and this INEPT organzation keeps all these ingrates. I hope all u bear fans stay far away from this crap team until they finally GET IT!!!

"We have very similar thoughts, and the biggest thought is that we want to win."

Looks like Abbott & Costello struck out again. Wassamatta' Jerry, doesn't anybody want to work for you and Lovie?

It's time McKaskey got off her wrinkled old keester and cleaned house - Cowher is still available!!!!!

What does Orton have to do with anything at this point? This blog is about Jackson not comming here. Orton is a FA, his team has decided not to extend him during the season and he is not on the Bears, end of story.

Their is some Silver lining this off season. While I do not think Tice is a great line coach, and believe he was handed a loaded line when he took over with 3 first round picks a Pro Football rookie of the year, on of the all time great guards in McDaniel and a first round LT and top level center. I do feel he does have a good eye for line talent. While Lovie and Angelo are not down in Bama, Tice is and that is a good thing. He has a better eye for offensive line talent then both of them combined and you know he is not down their looking at recievers. It looks like the Bears are going O-Line in the third round and thats a good thing. They will probably look for a new young guard or Center and the third round is good place to find them.

Its a lame duck situation in Chicago in terms of Coaching staff, and as Aikman said this morning on 670, the best coaches always go early. Word is the Bears are saying they are offering a 3 year contract but in reality when they speak with the agents they are offering only 2 years. I don't think the Bears are trying to get any of these guys. I think the Bears are doing what they are doing for apperance sake. I think they have one guy they want, his name is Martz and he will be the guy they hire. Look they have basically eliminated everyone already. It will be Martz, it was always going to be Martz.

Get a life dude. Seriously.

All this hate and pretend is turning your blood into acid.

We're currently working on Lovie Smith and Virginia McCaskey dolls. The Lovie Smith doll you pull a string and it says "Rex Grossman Is Still Our Quarterback" the Virginia McCaskey doll you pull the string and all it does is fall asleep. We'll have them in stores by Christmas.

My team hates me and we blew all our draft picks on crappy defensive players.

My lover Brandon marshall wants to leave me!

My passing stats will be in the low 2000's without Brandon Marshall!!

Hey Guys I'm a free Agent! I lead my team to a 2-8 record!!!

Now on one in Denver likes me!

8-8 we missed the playoffs! I tried my best with 2 pick sixes!! That's what I do best! Lose!!!

Don't worry about me I found a job, the Illini needed a new waterboy.

Maybe we could get Ron Turner to come back? I don't think he's doing anything.

I mean, we would probably have to pay him more money than the contract he just had, but won't be great to hear Bears management tell us this is the guy they wanted the whole time!!!

Go Bears! Top 5 pick in 2011...

Please people do something to hit this ownership where it hurts. Don't buy the merchandise
For the non season ticket holders-don't buy single game tickets.
For the season ticket holders or those who just have to go to the games, limit your concession purchases; considering eating and drinking your fill before you go to Soldier Field.
Every dollar that you give just perpetuates the misery, so it's right back on you as a contributing factor.
This ownership spews jibberish about pride in the tradition. What tradition? Tradition of futility and either miserly or foolish business decisions? A couple of division championships and 2 league championships in the last 64 years is not a tradition of winning.
A senile old lady and/or a silver spoon in mouth weasel is driving this bus off the road and I'll just wait for the next one.

@Bear Fan

there are a fair number of QBs in the history of the NFL who went to losing college programs and succeeded in the NFL. your arguments are hollow and not well researched at all. There are also a good number who made their program better when they were there...but saw the college fall back to its losing ways after they left. for starters...Drew Brees went to Purdue...PURDUE! they BARELY have a win percentage over .500...so yeah. TECHNICALLY brees came from a winning program but your arguments a lame about Cutler. come up with a real reason...not "he went to a losing college so he sucks" moron. Furthermore....Learn how to spell.

Have been thrilled with Cutler, again thank you Denver very much. With a horrible team, zero wide recievers, 1.5 seconds of line blocking per play and no running game what so ever he still throws more touchdowns than any other Bears QB in history save Eric Kramer. I find that truly unbeleivable. One TD shy of the all time Bears record of 28.
I am happy that this whole coaching debacle is shining the brightest spotlight possible on this organization. I hope professionally they are the laughing stock of the NFL. It is time that this ownership is shown for what it is. The worst I have ever seen. If they were a neighborhood grocery store they would have burned down the store by now to collect insurance. SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL NOW PLEASE

Unbelievable, this guy chooses the Raiders over the Bears. So, he chose Al Davis' drama, a bad QB (LaMarcus), a head coach that punches the assistant coaches, and the related job security over the loser McCaskeys, working for Lovely and the Bears.

The Abe Gibron days look glorious compared to these idiots who run the Bears nowadays.

How embarrasing.
I can't remember an organization looking so bad nationally before.

and I don't understand how Soldier Field is filled up every week to line McCaskey's pockets with cash and reward this.

Unbelievable.

and it probably wouldn't be so obvious that you were the same person if you didn't make the same consistent grammatical errors under each differing screen name. just a thought: mix it up a bit...haha!

Bandit_king on January 26, 2010 11:06 AM

IronDitka... Jay sucks at blowing. My dream finally came true yesterday and I had Ménage à trois with Lovie and Angelo!!!

You people dont know what you are missing.

Lovie Smith on January 26, 2010 11:02 AM

I had lame duck for dinner last night it was delicious.

The franchise that is The Chicago Bears isn't really about football any more. This is a very sad episode that, I hope, can be overcome. Shame on the McCaskey's and management! "Why, how can you not see it?"

never a Bears' fan on January 26, 2010 11:00 AM

Could anyone tell me if Lovie's head phones work or are they just ear warmers? I have never seen him talk into the mike. Maybe, we should be glad he doesn't talk.

I think the Chicago Bears have hit an all time low. They are even making my cubbies look good. When all the candidates come out of interviews to return to their orginal coaching jobs. Candidates won't even show for up for interviews because they were offered a job by the worst franchise in the NFL. I am embarrassed to be a fan Bears right now

jk80906 on January 26, 2010 10:11 AM
Some of you Bears fans still don't get it.
No one wants to come to Chicago and kiss The JayBaby's butt every day.
____________________________________________________________

Way to misread the situation dumb a$$.

This has nothing to do with Jay Cutler and everything to do with lameduck Angelo and lameduck Lovie. Who wants to get fired along with the GM and headcoach in one year?

This is exactly the term lameduck is used for these situations in NFL.

Johnny Milburn on January 26, 2010 10:58 AM

For the record. We as bears love cutler. To all the haters out there as awful as you say he was he still threw for a career high in TD last season. Cutler is not the reason for coaches turning down the job it's the fact that they don't want to work for lovie for one season. The fact that this idiot went to the raiders over the bears is laughable. He wouldn't have gotten the job here anyways. I would say the bears should be looking at the colts qb or wr coach. This guy really knows how to coach his wrs and would be an asset to this team. I expect cutler and company to have a big year next season, but the only downside to that is will that make it even more difficult to remove lovie?

I thought the Bears had a losing season last year because of incompetent coaching and management. I thought the Bears couldn't hire coordinators because of incompetent coaching and management. But then I come here and see that the reason for both is Jay Cutler.

I guess the problem is not that coaching and management are incompetent, it's just that no one can succeed with Cutler at QB. That's what I learned reading these comments anyways.

If any of us went for a job interview and we were told "we want to offer you a great job but the only drawback is you could be fired after year" would we want that job? I don't think so. Same thing is happening with the Bears, no coach wants to go to a team where they could be fired after a year. So if more coaches turn this job down don't be surprised.

Again, shouldn't the FIRST THING THE BEARS DID, was they should have FIRED TED PHILLIPS, and restart at the TOP, down !

Wasn't all of this obvious during that 3 ring circus act after the season.

No making the playoffs is not acceptable; the offense is showing improvement and the cover 2 is equally as effective (sarcasm intended) as usual. This is why we've decided to fire our offensive coordinator. Turner may have been on the list of potential firings but he wasn't at the top.

Here's the list and the thought process:

1. Fire the GM - too expensive
2. Fire the Coach - too expensive
3. Fire the OC - that way fans will have false hope for 2010 - check
4. Fire the DC - see #2
5. Fire any other Coach/staff not related to the McCaskey's

Potentail coaching candidiates SEE this much clearer than the BEARs brain trust - and ...

When we lose a coach to a team like the Raiders we have serious problems.

Mickey Mouse on January 26, 2010 10:42 AM

I am officially turning down an interview to be the Bears offensive coordinator, staying at Disneyland was something I couldn't pass up.

Bring back Wade Wilson!!

The best thing to happen for DENVER was getting rid of Jay Cutler. The Bears should be so lucky, the guy is a Cancer.
Will someone tell me about his success in Football? He showed his true colors in Denver. He will become known as a COACH-KILLER IN THE NFL.

never a bears' fan on January 26, 2010 10:39 AM

The Bears could put a Pop Warner team on the field and as long as they keep the tailgating, the fans will come. Forget about the team and improve the tailgating. Also, I like the scarves and promotions. Increase the parking fees and lower the ticket prices. Watching a game from the parking lot is better than being in a cold stadium with losers.

So this makes it the third "thanks but no thanks?" This has become so ridiculous. Hello McCaskeys? Angelo? Wake up, no coaches want to come here, doesn't that tell you something? Pay attention already. How about the Bears just don't play next season then Lovie and Angelo can FINALLY be fired then maybe we can find coaches who do want to come here.

Lovie, no one wants to put up with your bull. It’s time for you to pack your bags and leave town.

Lovie, no one wants to put up with your bull. It’s time for you to pack your bags and leave town.

It's pretty bad when you'd rather work for Al Davis. At this rate, the only choice of OC will be.....wait for it...........Ron Turner!!

this is a joke now!!!!! no one wants to coach here why ..? only 1 way to sort this out BILL COWHER

Yes I am still a viable candidate for the job. anyways I know I would be better then this Hue Jackson fella as what Ravens offense has been that good anyway. Time to keep brushing up my skills on Madden 2010.

Some of you Bears fans still don't get it.

No one wants to come to Chicago and kiss The JayBaby's butt every day. The guy is poison - lazy, mouthy, pouty, not-so-bright, no leadership skills - just the "potential" of that big arm to excite the uneducated fans and put the coaches on the hot seat.

The guy is a career loser. No coach is going to change that - and very few will want to try.

Please delete all postings under the "Jay Cutler" name. Obviously a angry Bronco's fan who has nothing of value to post here. Bears managment is braindead and it is becoming more plain with every rejection. If the Raiders are being percieved as a better job, then your organization SUCKS !

Please let this be one or two (packers, vikings,or broncos) trolls using different nicknames to hate on Jay Cutler. Please don't tell me the Bears have this many idiotic fans.I have a feeling its the former rather than the latter though. The reason why no coach wants to come to the bears is for the simple fact that everyone knows Lovie is gone next year, therefore they have no job security whats so ever. Bears need to wake up and get rid of Lovie and Angelo now before this embarrassment gets out of control.

Wake up everybody!!! Jay Cutler is a bona fide loser!!
The guy cane out of a losing program @ VANDERBILT. Would someone please name me a QB who came from a losing college program over the past 25 years who succeeded in the NFL.
The guy had a year losing record in college!!!!!!!!!!

Cutler has never done anything,( IN DENVER HE SAID HE WAS BETTER THAN ELWAY) but talk. The 2006 draft was hype , and the media convinced some teams that the guy could play in the NFL. The Bears should rid themselves of those guys that are from Vanderbilt as they don't know how to win. Hell, one winning season since 1982 says a lot about the players who come from there. Chris Williams will be a bust also. Cutler is Aggrogant, self-serving, self-worshiping, and will cause Lovie , and the next O-C to lose his job.
The way he left Denver tells the whole story about that guy.

I see a RYAN LEAF in the making!!!!!!!

Whenever your team gets passed up because of the Raiders you are in trouble.

voice of reason on January 26, 2010 9:36 AM

anyone notice that not many teams are making big changes with the nfl management/labor showdown looming. that nobody wants to move from their existing team especially when you add in the uncertainty of lovie's contract, well, this is what you get. the oc would have to go to someone like martz. even martz has to have some pride. he might not want the job if the list of rejections gets any longer. add my name to the list of those that think this team is rotten from the top down. another factor in the rejections may be that there are no high draft picks to rebuild the o-line or find a tall go-to receiver. (marshall in free agency is best bet) giving cowher the same deal as caroll got at seattle or shanahan got in washington, would be the best course of action. it won't happen this year though, and maybe never with the bears ownership. i prefer to wait and see how cutler performs with some talent around him before i condemn him. the o-line and receiving corp. have been degenerating since the superbowl year. it hit full force this season. no qb could have saved this offense.

Cutler is the problem?
Are you guys serious!!! He has the worst year of his career and hes already number 2 in most Bear QB stats! You people are STUPID! Devin Hester is the #1 WR! Devin Hester wouldn't start on any other team! Jon Gruden, Denny Greene, Mike Martz, Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, All of these guys would take Cutler in a heartbeat. They've got WAYYY more cred than you clowns.
Now the reason the Bears can't find a coach is Lovie Smith. No matter what Angelo says, he is a lame duck. No real OC or DC will come here knowing that they will be fired next year. Mike Tice came because he knows that he will get first dibs at head coach because Lovie will be fired by week 12-13. We all knew this would happen. You cannot expect top flight coordinators to come in to a short term situation. The Bears should just go ahead and hire Martz. I'm not a Martz fan, but he's the best they're gonna do. Then we can tool up to get Gruden or Cowher next year.

People, please lets get real here. Do we really want someone working here who thinks the Raiders are a better organization than the Bears. That in itself should tell you all you need to know. Have fun working for that nutbag Al Davis.

Look out Detroit..We're aiming for you! on January 26, 2010 9:26 AM

Seriously, even guys like this would rather go to the Raiders than join the worst coaching staff in the league.

Thanks to the McCaskeys for keeping this incompetent management team/coaching staff in place.

MA Bears Fan on January 26, 2010 9:25 AM

Would someone please Call Mike Heimerdinger? Get him here and show our famous coach the door. Let Mike build the group he needs and resign ourselves that 2010 will be a rebuilding year only.

Van Valvis on January 26, 2010 9:24 AM

how bout jim harbaugh out of stanford or maybe bob avalini

If other coaches read the comments on this site, no wonder they're staying away.

1985 Bears on January 26, 2010 9:14 AM

You people cannot be serious. Cutler is the greatest QB I've ever seen wear a Chicago uniform. His natural physical talent is phenomenal and his penchant for poor decision-making can be helped by a GOOD COACH, something this team sorely lacks. This half-assed search for a DC and OC have made Chicago the laughing stock of the NFL. As a lifelong diehard fan, it's absolutely embarassing. Bears fans need to stop accepting mediocrity and boycott the team until "real" changes are made.

This is just pathetic. The Raiders? The Bears lost out to the Raiders?

Lovie the Clown on January 26, 2010 9:08 AM

Losing a guy to the Raiders. The Raiders.
It's official, the Bears are a Hue Joke to the rest of the NFL.
Now I am going to go stare cluelessly and emotionlessly at the scoreboard, while pretending the Cover 2 still works.

This is what happens when you have a lame duck head coach. Everyone knows Lovies gone after next year, therefore no one wants to go through the hassle of coming here only to be let go next season. This team will never be a consistent contender until ALL of the upper management is replaced. Philips, Angelo, and Smith have to be relieved of their duty.

How funny is this becoming. We can't even get a decent candidate to interview for the job. Noone wants a job with a head coach on a one year deal, its obvious. When they decided to keep Lovie, they should have gave him a one year extension just for the sake of avoiding this from happening. Senior bowl is here and we dont have a offensive oc, defensive oc, db coach, te coach, or qb coach.

Fire everyone. Hire Leslie Frazier as Head Coach, and top flight OC and DC candidates will be willing to come here, since they'll have more than a year to prove themselves.

If you're an OC prospect, with a current job in the league, why would you take the risk for one year? If Cutler gets hurt and the team sinks, your Bears' OC career is over, and now you're looking for a new job again. Who takes this kind of job, except for someone with nothing to lose, and no current job in the league? Even Martz has said "enough is enough"; it's bad when you're rejected by a guy who can't buy a job in the NFL.

I still see Lovie pointing his finger, saying "Trust Me", as he threw out the only Bear who's been to the Superbowl with this organization as a player and a coach. You know how they say screw-you in the NFL? "Trust Me".

It looks real bad when someone rejects the Bears for Oakland. Al Davis still runs his team, even though he went senile decades ago. However, that must still be better than Lovie.

Bearsfan7255 on January 26, 2010 9:01 AM

Give a bunch of idiots a forum and they will fill it up! You call Bears management morons. What about AIG, GM, Dodge, BofA, an etc??? Get a life. Name calling doesn't solve anything. There is plenty of time. If they don't have someone in place by mid February, then start worrying. Don't you get it! Your opinion doesn't matter anyway!!!

Thank God he got hired by Oakland...

We did not need this guy or any more like him — under-performers who are overrated.

At this point, it should be beyond obvious, even for Bears management, that with Lovie still as HC, nobody would want to come here.
And the people suggesting it has anything to do with Cutler being here are so blinded by his 09 performance that really don't have a clue.

Hire someone from the Colts staff. I'm sure they're all buddy buddy and all because of the Dundgy ties, but let's get real here. Why would anyone from the Colts go to Chicago.

Mrs. McCaskey...again this is a joke. Look at your fan base and please understand that they are not dumb. A large majority of your fan base have a decent football I.Q. and they know your upper Management is terrible. This whole staff needs to be imploded. Even if someone from the Colts comes to help out you still have the 3 buffoons running your team into the ground.

Cut them loose before it's to late.

Someone WITH a Brain says on January 26, 2010 8:41 AM

Good Lord, Easy. Jay wouldn't go on a date with you or what? This has nothing to do with Jay you moron. It has everything to do with a completely incompetent management team. Try not to let your personal feelings of unrequited man-on-man love get in the way of your analysis.

Phillips, Angelo and Smith ALL have to go. If this were a business, the Board would demand it. They better hope the McCaskey's don't poke their heads out of their rear ends and take a good look at what's going on. Thankfully, Michael is probably writing the follow-up to his business management blockbuster "Managing Through Ambiguity" and thus too busy to notice that his company is being run by Larry, Moe and Schemp.

You folks want more change you can believe in? Stop making these people rich.

Hey, I got laid-off a while back. Maybe I should apply. I've got no football experience but it looks like the bar will soon be at my level, so if I apply now I'll be at the front of the line!

Mr Sandman on January 26, 2010 8:36 AM

Wake-up people, and smell the coffee.

chicago needs a second pro football team. bring in the rams or jaguars, their attendance is bad. the new team could play at sox park.

When does Ron Turner become the most qualified candiadate who will work for the Bears?

Vegas Bears on January 26, 2010 8:34 AM

If you people really think Cutler is the reason they can not find a OC, then you are the ones that lack a brain. Cutler is staying, and will break bears records left and right.

Coaches around the league would love to work with Jay that is not the issue. The issue is the Head Coach and the GM that people feel arent going to last more than one year and therefore this is a one year gig. Forget it and hire Martz now. I didnt like the idea before, but he would help in Jays development (got back to back 4000 yard years out of Jon Kitna for cying out loud).

Fred Rogers on January 26, 2010 8:33 AM

Can you say league wide Laughingstock? I think you can. This rudderless ship of an organization has no accountability at the top, unless we are to believe that we should be calling out an elderly 87 year old woman for this ineptitude. 2010- the year of family activity Sundays in Chicago. To think that tens of thousands of people in Chicago will still plunk down their money to go see this sham of a team is unbelievable. Sad but True.

What would happen to Lovely if he managed a hiring process like this in private industry?
Let's say the hiring was for key positions that customers and competitors had their eye on. Further, let's say that the company had a tough year and it was important to control perceptions, no matter what the truth really might be.

I'd say that Lovely would be fired for a very poor job that did not fulfill management expectations.

Why does he get a pass here? Time for McCaskeys to step up and admit their mistake in retaining him, cut their losses and bring in Cowher.

This feels just like a Bears game plan from the last 3 years.

How bad are these interviews on the Bears side? Angelo started off forgetting to check a box, and now this...

Wow - rejected again! This goes way beyond embarassing - it is time to seriously rethink the keep Lovie/keep Jerry strategy and start over. Someone (Virginia?) needs to wake up and call Bill Cowher today!

beareebear on January 26, 2010 7:50 AM

Hey, "it's easy really"...why all the Cutler hate? Is he the one you truly feel is responsible for the mess that the Bears are in? Tell us exactly why he's "brainless".

I think this already has become embarassing. We are now on Option #5 for Offensive Coordinator and Option #2 or 3 for D Coordinator. It is very sad that this once great organization has turned into a laughing stock where no one wants to coach. The fact that being the QB coach for the Cincinatti Bengals is not rated higher to some than the OC fo the Bears is a joke. One more year of this BS and we can clear house, cause Im telling you right now, this team is going to be 5-11 or 6-10 next year at best with the schedule they have.

MT Bears Fan on January 26, 2010 7:32 AM

At what point does this just become flat out embarassing?

Sorry but a QB coach is not good enough....still time ti fire everyone you cheap pieces of you know what.
