Staff report
The Bears' trade for Jay Cutler came with an added bonus: the fifth-round draft pick that Denver included in the deal turned into Johnny Knox, who caught 45 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie.
Former Packers All-Pro wide receiver James Lofton was impressed, but not surprised.
"You're getting a good receiver in Johnny Knox," Lofton said Friday on "The Mully & Hanley Show" on WSCR-AM 670. " I like Johnny Knox. I worked him out during the off-season and I was really high on him. I was a little worried that he's not real big, but there are some guys who aren't real big that can play in the NFL, and he's one of them."
Asked about Bears' so-called No. 1 receiver Devin Hester, Lofton replied, "(Let's) leave it on a high note."

so the only two people who still insist that devin is a number one receiver are lovie and jerry? no big surprise.
One other thing the I don't like is the coach don't play bears football it's ram football no ex bears is on the coaching staff I find that hard 2 swallow.
If anything they need 2 fix the o line fast.If cutler gets time 2 throw he can be dangerous. Hester should be a d back . sign Marshall go from there.Maybe go after L.T. but that tampa2 crap don't work in the pro's go to a 3-4 it works. if G-bay can make work the bears can do it 2.

The Bears should start Earl Bennett and Devin Aromashodu...then fix the problems with the OL. The Bears remind me of the Redskins...they want to win now, but not build a team that can always win. Stick with these guys, and bring someone in who can develop them. The Colts developed Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, and Green Bay developed Donald Driver and Greg Jennings...and if Green Bay can develop Probowl receivers the Bears can too. The Bears need to follow their script.
Hester only had 3 TD's and that tells you something, he blew three easy TD passes because he quit on his rout or he let up. If he had not gotten Hurt we would have never seen DA, who showed clearly he is the better of the two. He knows his routs better and he does all those little things that recievers do. Back shoulder plays, blocking, not giving up on a play, making in rout adjustments. He isn't really anything special but what he is, is an actual reciever. In consecutive seasons Hester has missed consecutive games do to injury.
Knox has the physical talent to be a good reciever in the Harrison mold, but what he is missing is Harrisons toughness and reciever smarts. Harrison never practiced with gloves, in fact no Bear reciever should be allowed to practice with gloves. Toughen up their hands, Knox is small but he has to learn not to let DB's push him around, guys make contact with him and he just stops and looks for a flag. Good hands, good routs, good instincts for the game and QB, and good speed equal a good reciever.
Hester has good speed. But he really is a trick play guy and thats what he should be doing. Boldin, Breaston, and Harvin are all trick play guys.
Yonatan, we would all love a Brandon Marshall although I would not put Roy Williams in his class, but guys like Marshall don't grow on trees. Even Colston isn't as good as Marshall but yes we could use a 6-4 beast with good hands who has a 35 inch+ verticle. That would be nice.
If you look at the Bears and Saints you could see that their recievers actually compare except for one guy.
Bennett = Henderson (not as good as henderson but close)
Knox = Moore (actually Better than Moore)
DA = Meachem
Hester however does not equal Colston, not even close.
But then you have the main problem which is the Bears offensive line. The Saints have one of the best lines in football and are great at pass protection.
Not much available for the Bears or anyone else this year as far as FA go.
However Kevin Wlaters from Texas would be a nice addition to the WR group. 6-4 220, he does not have great speed but is great at everything else, and I mean everything else.
If the Bears do not go after Logan Mankins this year their is something wrong with them.
Other names they should look at include Ray Edwards, Kampamn, Dunta Robinson.
They don't have two first round picks and have a few well paid players leaving. So they will have more than enough money in an uncapped year.
well from what ive seen cutler has his guys that he wants to get the ball to! hester is doubled covered alot and if not for missing 4 games he could have had 1000yrd season. Hester had a great year and was the only consistent wr the bears had all year
Considering the poor route running that Knox exhibited as a rookie, what does that say about Hester? Lofton was one of the most technically sound receivers to ever play the game. The guy knew how to set up defenders, how to get separation no matter what the coverage, and how to help his QB.
This is the kind of guy who should be coaching our WRs. Maybe an offseason of work with Lofton will get Hester the coaching he needs to find out what he can really do. If he can't cut it as a WR, we need to make that decision quickly and move on to plan b. If he can, he needs the right type of coaching and development so that he can slow down and catch the ball instead of it bouncing off his shoulders, or work back towards Cutler when he leaves the pocket. Or to COME BACK on a comeback route.
Daryl Drake either has not taught him these things, or he hasn't caught on. The problem we have is we do not know which one of those is the case. But it sounds like Lofton thinks the problem is Hester, not Drake.
Johnny Knox is very good, the Bears will still need Brandon Marshall or Roy Williams to compete.
