The Rockford Register Star reports: Rockford RiverHawks took advantage of their Northern League move by signing former Cubs first baseman Randall Simon.
Simon, 34, would have been well over the Frontier League age limit (27). However, the Northern League's only rule on veteran players is no more than four a team.
"The first thing is he gives us some sort of identity of who we are and what we are about," said co-owner Dave Ciarrachi, also the team's director of baseball operations. "And last but certainly not least, he absolutely can still play a little bit. We expect a lot out of him."
Simon, who was a late-season addition to the 2003 Cubs, is best known for an incident when he hit with a bat Guido the Italian sausage with a bat during the Milwaukee Brewers' famed Sausage Race."
