Former Blackhawks star Chris Chelios was arrested early Dec. 28 and charged with speeding and driving under the influence, Westmont police said.
According to police, Chelios, now playing for the Chicago Wolves, was driving alone in a pickup truck east on Ogden Avenue in the area of Blackhawk Drive in Westmont when he was stopped.
Chelios was then taken to the Westmont police department, where he was charged and later released on bond. He has a Feb. 1 court date, according to reports.

The man was fine the cop new who he was and tried to get him in trouble hes a great guy and a hero and they didn't drop the dui charges cause he's a superstar it's because he was fine and cop was a crook
He was treated just like any other average citizen ... he got pulled over and popped plain and simple ... all these people clamoring for a "break" because he's a pro? What the hell! Pro athletes get enough breaks in salary, perks, freebies, comps, etc. not to mention too much adulation from the fans. Its time guys like this walk a little bit in a average joe's shoes. I admire Cheli's hockey career but that is totally separate from taking a 1 ton weapon and driving it drunk ... I WAS glad to see P Kane in a limo drinking though ... I have a bad feeling this guy is gonna get it himself sooner or later ... this little man can't seem to hold his booze and make good decisions off the ice ...
Hey....this gut is NOT an asshole. he poses for every picture that he's ever been asked. Too bad one was a mugshot. I would hate to be the Westmont cop that busted him.Probably a rookie that didn'e even know him. Any one of us, AT ANY TIME, can get a DUI. Towns are looking for revenue because of shortages and the economy. Westmont was ALWAYS looking for money when the economy was great. So this doesn't surprise me. Chelios has done more for the City of Chicago, and the fans than most of the Blackhawks have. How soon we forget!
Ron-the investigators waited too long to check Heatley to SEE if he was intoxicated. So we will never know if he was drunk. But he was driving the wrong way and speeding, so either way he is a jerk.
There is not such thing as "DWI" in the State of Illinois...You need to freshen up on Illinois law, or your bound to be next.
All this expert legal counsel from a bunch of idiots who probably never made it through high school.
I particularly enjoy the DUI vs. DWI and legal limit discussions.
He was driving drunk and was arrested. Period. Who he is and who he was is irrelevant.
WELL, NOW I SUPPOSE ALL OF THE KNUCKLEHEADS WILL COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK TO EXPRESS ALL OF THEIR HOI POLLOI WHY THE GYROS KING OF CHICAGO IS A BAD GUY !!! By the way, the pronounciation of that word is ( yiddos ) not jiro !!! BUT I WOULD BE CURIOUS HAVING READ THE STORY AND SEEING THAT CHRIS GOT STOPPED AT BLACKHAWK DRIVE, IF HE MIGHT BE SENDING THE HAWKS A MESSAGE THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO SHORE UP THEIR DEFENSE FOR THE CUP RUN ???
DUI isn't DWI. He wasn't drunk.....
How dare the lot of you. This man is a legend in hockey and should be remembered as one. This incident has nothing to do with his hockey career and is a personal matter in which he made a stupid mistake. As well, he is probably the most fit and in shape person on the planet; I am confident he was fully capable of driving his car despite blowing over the legal limit.
hey, lets pull the white guy in a Bentley over and find something on him.
Who knew hockey fans were so self righteous? I'm sure Chris Chelios is sitting as his computer right now to get awesome advise from all you guys because he really cares what you think. Fact is, it's his mistake, his problem, and none of your business. God bless him and his family in what is no doubt a pretty crappy time for them.
This guy is and always was a jerk. He should have stayed in Detroit. I hope the Blackhawks never consider retiring his number.
Rent a Limo??? Remember when the Red Wings did that after 1997 when they knew they would be drinking & a team trainer & Vladimir Konstantinov were almost killed when the pot head driver wrapped the limo around a tree?
Yeah I guess that did alot of good.
I met him 3 years ago at a bar frequented by Blackhawks. The got was hammered! He was playing for Detroit and had a game here the next day. I assumed he was taking a cab that night like most people in the city do. But they have cabs in Westmont. Really dumb move Chris. Did you not just read about Savard's business partner who killed his girlfriend while driving drunk? That didn't send you a reminder?
Ok he is an idiot, he is also human and humans do stupid things, bad thing is he is Chris Chelios future Hall of Fame hockley player from Chicago, if he was the average human this does not make any paper but the local Westmont paper. For those of you who think he is a role model get a life, he is an athlete not a role model. Maybe the trib should run a article like this for every DUI arrest made each day.
@ Bill - there was no alcohol involved in the Dany Heatley accident. Get the facts straight before you accuse someone of something!
I agree with CPD...take his keys away and give him a damn ride home.....
Nothing but a punk in my opinion. When are these morons going to learn and grow up.
Who cares and why is this news? People get DUIs everyday.
Yeah Rob, the headline should read "canadians killing other canadians":
CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and coach Keith Magnuson was killed in an auto accident in suburban Toronto Monday, the team said. He was 56.
Magnuson played for Chicago from 1969-80 and coached the team for 11/2 seasons. He was riding with former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Rob Ramage.
Ramage was later convicted and sentenced to prison for 4 years for DUI Vehicular Manslaughter.
Both sides of the borders populations do stupid things, its nothing unique to here. Time for the sport and the NHL to put the word out about making other arrangements for transportation if their players are going to (which they will) drink.
"then" I apologize, not "than"
Hey rob so you want to start something stupid with your comment huh? Ok. Here's one for you, remember Bob Probert? He got busted for drugs and wasn't even allowed back in Canada when playing for the Red Wings. A Canadian being dumb.
These morons should lose their licenses permanently for being so stupid and arrogant and dumb. If Chelios is hurting for money, than I apologize, but if not, there is no excuse for him not renting a cab or a limo.
Here's a little explanation for those who don't understand how DUI charges work. You can be charged for driving under the influence in two ways:
1) Based on your performance in field sobriety tests, the officer determines that you are under the influence of alcohol. Note that you can have a BAC below the legal limit of .08. Even if your BAC is only .02, if you fail a field sobriety test, you can be charged with a DUI.
2) Your BAC is .08 or higher. Note here that even if you are able to pass a field sobriety test</B, if your BAC is .08 or higher, you can be automatically charged with a DUI.
Basically then, just don't drink and drive. And don't think that you can have a few drinks, stay under .08, and not be charged with anything.
Busted on Blackhawk Drive, is this some kind of bad omen or something?
His DUI verifies rumors that have been out there for a couple decades now---the dudes a flaming drunk. Stories of him being carried out by other NHLers, each grabbing a leg and an arm, out of special NHL events in Canada, are apparently true.
Great he can still play and be in great physical condition---not so great for the reputation though. Especially given the DUI Denis Savards business partner had last week that killed that innocent girl.
We lost Keith Magnuson to a drunk NHL driver leaving a funeral of an NHL coach....
Heck even the current Hawks coach got a DUI summer before last...Old Man Wirtz had one, former Coach Mike Keenan got one..Savard had one too, but got out of it in court.
Dirtiest secret of the NHL---they drink like they play, recklessly. Time for an Expose---might save their and our lives.
Good Luck Chris--we still love you, but sober up dude.
If the NBA is the thug league, the NHL is the drunks league...time to clean both their acts up.
its called DUI, Driving under the influence. It doesn't say you have to be over anything. He was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. He could have only had one drink and a police officer can still charge him with driving under the influence.
Bad example for the kids that look up to him.
Not enough money for a Cab? The cops are out looking to make an example. Ask Dan Hampton. Not like the old days...
The guys is human after all. Great player for sure.
Hey RobJob, theres a lot of dumb Canucks too, only when they drink & drive people die ie: Rob Ramage, Danny Heatley
don't point fingers here start with your own barn.
he is a dumb american. GO CANADA GO!!!!
I don't get DUI, you can blow under the legal limit and still get charged with DUI. I agree, Chelios is awesome, I hope this doesn't tarnish his legacy.
cops are handing DUIs like candy. i got charged with a DUI and i blew a .05, which is under the .08 limit! It got dropped in court, but only after they made a broke college student even broker by having to get a lawyer.
Did he sibmit to a breathalizer? If so, what was his BAC?
He was arrested near Blackhawk Drive? Perhaps he was drunk and wanted to 'Re-Commit to the Indian'. I wonder if he was wearing a Red Wings jersey.
hey westmont... are you kidding me?!?! Ive never given one dui and I dont plan on starting now. Especially with chelios! Give the guy a ride home ya tool! Even I give the average joe rides home everyday instead of ruining thier life with a dui.. why the heck would you give him one.. HES AWESOME!
