The Fire reached into the international coaching ranks Monday, naming former El Salvador national chief Carlos de los Cobos as the franchise's fifth head coach.
De los Cobos, 51, brings more than 30 years of experience as a player and coach in Mexico and Central America. He succeeds Denis Hamlett, who coached the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
"After viewing tapes and seeing (Fire) games, I was able to see a lot of the characteristics of the team from the last couple of seasons," de los Cobos said during a news conference at Toyota Park. "I consider it a solid team, one that was well-ordered and played a very direct game, very frontal game and was very organized from the back. The defense was very strong."

As head coach of El Salvador's national team from 2006-09, de los Cobos
raised that team's international profile as it contended for a World
Cup qualifying berth for the first time in 12 years. He previously
coached Club America of the Mexican Primera Division and favors a wide-open style of play.
"My idea, philosophy is to play an attractive style of soccer," de los Cobos said. "I know that the most important thing is to win, but there are different ways of winning. My goal and objective is to play a style that's enjoyed by the fans, in which here's a lot of ball movement, good touch on the ball. That's the kind of style I'd like to bring.
"I have to learn things quickly, not only the players but how things operate in this league and the differences and nuances between this league and (others) like the Mexican First Division. But it also makes me excited and it makes me work harder in terms of approaching this challenge."
