By Dan Pompei and Brad BiggsThe Bears' next candidate for their offensive coordinator position is Chargers assistant head coach/tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski, multiple league sources said.
Chudzinski is expected to arrive in Chicago on Wednesday night and interview over the next 24 hours. The Bears need to conclude the interview by Thursday night because the coaching staff and front office will depart early Friday on charter to South Carolina for the funeral of Gaines Adams.
Chudzinski previously was the Browns' offensive coordinator under Romeo Crennel and has experience as a play-caller both for Cleveland and the University of Miami.

Chudzinski was the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2007, when quarterback Derek Anderson began the season as a backup to Charlie Frye and ended up going to the Pro Bowl. He had a 10-5 record as a starter and passed for 3,787 yards and 29 TDs.
Anderson's strength was throwing the ball downfield, something the Bears want to do with Jay Cutler.
Chudzinski also is known for his ability to develop tight ends, having worked with Antonio Gates in San Diego, as well as Bubba Franks, Kellen Winslow and Jeremy Shockey at Miami.

hey Dago those jokes were pretty good. thanks for the laughs.
Mark my words: Marinelli as DC in 2010 and...
Wait for it....
Ol' Droopy Smith himself as OC. He sucked as DC, but with no obvious sense of urgency to find a GOOD OC, hiring all the position coaches first (why would an OC accept line coaches he wasn't a part of hiring?)...it's as plain as the nose an Angelo's face.
Cheap, cheap, cheap.

luckman - If the Bears won't offer Bill Cowher a deal he couldn't refuse, why would they present one to Frazier?
The only problem is that the Vikings will definitely block the Bears from talking to leslie frazier because he is under contract so there is no chance we will get him.
I'd hire this guy in a New York minute. Then give Leslie Frazier a deal he can't refuse and hallelulah...there will be hope.
For God's sake, just hire the guy. If we pass on him, we'll be left digging around for a HighSchool offensive coordinator. Will anyone really take this job w Lovie at the helm?
As for draft picks, honestly, the Bears don't know how to evaluate talent. Look at Pittsburgh's and Indy's first round choices (below). Indy's picking down near the bottom third of most of the rounds. Not every pick panned out, but don't tell me that's luck, that's just great management.
1996 19 (Round) Marvin Harrison WR
1997 19 Tarik Glenn OT
1998 1 *Peyton Manning QB
1999 4 Edgerrin James RB
2000 28 Rob Morris LB
2001 30 Reggie Wayne WR
2002 11 Dwight Freeney DE
2003 24 Dallas Clark TE
2004 No Pick
2005 29 Marlin Jackson CB
2006 30 Joseph Addai RB
2007 32 Anthony Gonzalez WR
2008 — — No Pick
2009 27 Donald Brown
some of you on here show a mountain of ignorance...there isn't a candidate out there you will be ok with. knute rockne himself could come in and you would not want him...some of you will never be happy. a depressing bunch of sad sacks...worse, the pessimists on here are completely throwing out incorrect facts and figures...
the guy just helped take a winning team to the No. 2 seed, he's a TE guru, and he has something many of the other options don't: a life completely separate from lovie smith. this isn't one of lovie's guys. this is one of the more popular up-and-comers in the league, moreso than bates, who you all decided (once we DIDN'T get him) that bates was the next great football mind...you don't want them until they're gone, so you can moan about how they didn't get them...then, if they do, you still wine...
pathetic existence if you lack optimism on any level...
Would Braylon Edwards follow him to Chi-Town?
I know the numbers of the Browns fell in'08, but D. Anderson proved to be a fraud (completed only 50.2 % of his passes when you need to be at 60 -65% these days); Braylon Edwards started dropping as many balls as he caught; and Jamal Lewis started to show his age. When those guys don't produce, there's not much that can be done.
tkevin: He would leave the Chargers because it would be a promotion to OC.
I'm not saying this is The Guy, but why (why?!) would he leave the Chargers to play for Lovie and the BEars?
He was also a great Tight End at the Univ.of Miami and part of a couple National Championship teams. The Bears could use some winners for a change!!
This would be another very good hire. The Chargers have one of the best offenses in the league. He is proven, sign him now!
There ya go Bears, interview coaches from winning teams! They are getting a little smarter.
Why should Norv Turner be interested in helping the franchise that just dumped his hapless brother by letting one of his assistant coaches interview there?
This makes no sense.
I forgot he was was a coach at the U. Considering that Shockey, Franks, and Winslow were all more polished coming into the league than Olsen is, maybe there is something to his work with the TEs. Tice really prefers the big uglies to the pretty boys who flex out like wideouts. Let him coach the line, and Chudzinski can work with Olsen and Kellen Davis, while coordinating the offense. We just need a QB coach who can work with Cutler.
Makes you wonder whether Martz is not an option any more. Chudzinski would not leave San Diego unless it was to be a coordinator, especially since they are looking for someone who can take over that side of the ball and let Lovie work on his pet projects, like staring at the clouds and picking out ones that look like animals...
If we don't allow Lovie's buddies and pals to come in here, we have the chance of stumbling across a competent coach....
There's another Chargers coach the Bears should talk to...
What does a qualified OC have to lose by coming to the Bears really? If he does well under Lovies pathetic system, he shows the resolve to do well in any system. Besides, the new OC knows that Lovie will not be here after next year. He can do whatever the hell he wants. If it works, Look what I did. If if it doesn't work, Well, I was forced into Lovie's system. Win Win. And, if Lovie is booted after next year and the offense DID actually put something together with what we have currently (because you know they aren't going to spend any money and get more "talent" in here next season), that new OC will probably end up at the new freaking head coach since the Bears cannot hire anyone outside the organization properly.
Looks like the Bears are having problems getting their coaching staff in line. WOnder Why? Maybe it is because anyone who talks to Lovie Smith sees how much of a loser he is. They see he has as much enthusiasm and energy as a rock. Who would want to work for a head coach like this. No one that is whom! The Bears will have to accept all the second and third tier coaches for their staff, accept it because it will stay this way until Smith is fired.
It was actually a pretty good set of picks up until about 1990 (with Urlacher being one of the only good picks since then). My personal favorite on the list is Dennis Fart – (1976)
What about Jim Fassel or Matt Cavanaugh?
Red Rover --
Just one? Since 1985? Which one is it?
Urlacher would be an easy guess -- but lets see...
Tommie Harris has been a pro bowl defensive tackle, whose skills have deminished a bit because of injury.
Marc Columbo is a guy the Bears gave up on too quickly. He certainly would look much better at right tackle right about now.
I realize Cedric Benson was a bust here, but did you see him ths season with the Bengals?
Mark Carrier went to three Pro Bowls and was the defensive rookie of the year.
Greg Olson is a pretty decent receiving tight end, albeit he needs to get better.
Walt Harris was a very very good cornerback who had a great career with the Bears and in the NFL.
No, the Bears have not picked up great players every year in the first round, but I'm wondering if the relative success rate is any better or worse than any other team. To me the bigger problem is how the Bears retain talent.
I think the timing of the interview is starnge. They have interviewed everyone over a two day period. What I find funny is that he is the third TE coach they have brought in. They love them TE coaches. I just can't imagine this guy giving Tice orders though.
You know what I always find strange is that the Trib only likes to give you part of the story. They talk about 07, but he was also the OC in cleavland in 08. When they went 4-12 and had a defense ranked 30th in points and 31st in yards. That was with largly the same offfense, Anderson was still the QB. The PTDIF was -118. The offense was ranked dead last in the nfl and no the defense was not that bad they were ranked 15th with an offense that hung them out to dry every game. Then he was fired by the Browns. Just think about that for a minute. Fired by the Browns.
Still better then Rehiring Ron Turner!
This guy got 3 Browns to the Pro Bowl? I didn't think that was possible! Especially on the offensive side. Hire this guy!
Find out what he wants and give it to him... It's that simple. He's far more qualified than anyone else they've talked about.
It doesn't matter who the Bears will pick as OC. The person will be forced to work within Smith's "We are a running team." and never be able to run an offense properly. Also, unless the OC has significant say into who plays for the offense, he will not have any chance at success. The coordinators are puppets controlled by the incompetent Smith/Angelo puppeteers.
Hey, a polish guy...he'll fit right in, hire him.
Did some of you even read the story. Lets see a coach that was the assistant head coach/tight ends coach for a team that just lost in the second round. I think he is just a little bit qualified for OC. Just like MT Bears Fan said he was responsible for the Browns best season in how long. Maby he can do the same for us. Look at the players Anderson vs. Cutler Winslow vs. Olson and ok right now they win for WR. But remember 2 and probley the third guy from that browns team is not even there anymore. Maby this has something to do with the coaches. Why not bring him to us, cant do any worse then last couple of seasons.
Well look. You know I'm still a strong supporter of Angelo and Lovie Smith because they knew exactly what to do at the end of this dissappointing season. What they did getting former offensive coordinator Ron Turner was the 100% right thing to do.
However, to interview this...schmoo..Chudzinski as a possible replacement? No..no...no!! Chudzinski is not a good choice, not a good choice at all.
A smart person stated that the Bears should interview Wade Wilson. I think Wade Wilson having a past history as the Bears QB coach would make a good offensive coordinator. Heck, the Bears should have made Mike Tice the OC as opposed to OL coach. Better yet Mike Tice could double as offensive line/OC. These two options would be way better than considering Chudzinski.
In all I have fait in Angelo/Lovie. When they interview this...Chudzinski guy, they will come to their senses and not bother with him. Chudzinksi, given his terrible tenure on the Cleveland Browns is too much of a red flag.
Sounds WAAAAAY more qualified than Turner. What a joke, just like the leadership of the organization. I say bring back wanstadt...At least they would have a real excuse for being bad.
I think the problem started in 1976 with Dennis Fart ahhahahahha
In reference to the Browns and Chudzinski comment, he was OC the year that Derek Anderson, Kellen Winslow, and Braylon Edwards went to the Pro Bowl. He's got a history of managing an offense and has a little credibility as well. Better than an OC from University of Tennesee or a retread that's bounced from team to team.
Hopefully Matt Cavanaugh gets a shot he's been around great play callers and coaches, ah man that takes out of the running no ties to a turner that wouldn't open a spot for Ron in san diego
WOW! They are desperate...OC from the Browns under Crennel...wtf is up with this organization propensity to hire average/mediocre coaches from losing programs. Damn they are cheap! They should have hired Nolan as soon as he was available...Angelo is a turd.
Not just a bit off topic...WAY OFF topic. the article wasn't about 1st round picks, especially going back to 1973.
A bit off-topic - but here's a history of BEARS 1sr round draft pick's - I think this helps us to see where the real problem lies up a Halas
