Bears hire Mike Tice to coach offensive line

| 13 Comments | UPDATED STORY

The Bears are bringing Mike Tice to Chicago as their offensive line coach, the Tribune has learned. The team was very aggressive in negotiations and struck a deal quickly.

"I'm excited, really excited," Tice said.

The former head coach of the Vikings had been working in Jacksonville as the assistant head coach/tight ends coach. The Jaguars gave the Bears permission to talk to Tice when it was unclear whether or not their staff would be retained.

Since that time, the Jaguars have decided to retain their coaching staff.

A source said Tice would like to be in the Midwest so he could be closer to his children.

Ellipsis - is a mark or series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word or a phrase from the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence (aposiopesis) (apostrophe and elipsis mixed). The ellipsis calls for a slight pause in speech.

It would seem to me that a good General Manager would first hire an offensive co-ordinator, who would help select his staff. Angelo is a dope.

The Tice Is Right. Pretty good hire and not a Rams flunkie and he doesn't look like he'd tolerate being a Lovie puppet and maybe he has a few secrets how to beat the Vikings.

it's Launchpad

No pocket protector needed. The man wears his writing utensils on his ear(s). Good hire.

This team needs position coaching. I believe there is some talent on both sides of the ball, but they need to play their position, stay healthy, and not give up penalty yardage. Position coaching should correct that, and two maniacs like Tice and Marinelli should keep these mofos paying attention to the details. As for the scheme and play-calling, we need a guy with brains. I like Martz for that role, but it wouldn't suprise me if the brass F it up.

You know, just what exactly did Tice do with the Jags? Andy Heck was and is the line coach and they have a coordinator. Tice worked with the TE's his first two years but was named assistant head coach and they hired a TE coach. So what the was Tice doing? By the way if you actually cheeck his record working with Lines, he has developed some players, but like Marinelli he was given a lot of talent to work with. But the actual history of his lines is not very good. After his first 2 years as a line coach with the vikings, his lines started giving up 40 plus sacks a season. After he became the Assistant Head Coach of the Jags, they also started giving up 40 plus sacks. What exactly is he good at? I mean Lovie likes him, but Lovie has liked lots of coaches and then fired them.

Walter Bearstradamus Brzeski on January 15, 2010 7:19 PM

Joe Felicelli: You 'stole my thunder' as Tice's arrival would seem like Kreutz would be gone. But, maybe the Bears needed a veteran O-Line coach that can work with young players and veteran players will listen to and not walk on or control

I highly doubt Kreutz or Roberto Garza listened much to Hiestand, or Bob Wylie before him, as Kreutz seems like a player that doesn't take well to be being corrected or told what to do and thought he was the 'guy'

IMO....Kreutz has been a cancer of the O-line for the past 3 years

beardown_NYC on January 15, 2010 7:14 PM

I like this hire. Tice is a meathead, but - like Lovie said - his record speaks for itself. 10 pro-bowl appearances during his time with the Vikings o-line. With Marinelli, this is an all-star pair of line coaches. There's a LOT more work to do, but I like the direction.

I think even John Shoop might have looked ok if he had had Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Issac Bruce, Torry Holt, Rick Proehl, and Orlando Pace (in his prime). And the same can be said for the roster that Ditka had.

A lame duck pick to assist a lame duck coach. My bears are becoming a laughing stock!

You're both wrong, it's spelled ellipsis. Stupid Bear Fans. Now go to bed and don't wake up until after Labor Day.

How are the going to get a O Man now, when you hire a coach before he comes.

Typical BS from the Bears...The O Coordinator hires picks their own guys

FIRE EVERYONE NOW

Mike,

Good call by you. I can write a sentence but apparently can't spell. I lent my spelling book to Sammy Sosa in the event he has to testify again. Have a nice weekend. God knows that Bears fans won't.

Although this is like putting the cart before the horse in hiring an offensive line coach before hiring an offensive coordinator...Never the less this is an excellent Hire by the Bears...I lived in Minnesota for 12 years before moving back to the Chicagoland area and got a chance to see Tice coach on a regular basis...He may not be a great head coach but he can definitely coach an offensive line...I can forsee a vast improvement in the offensive line play in the 2010 season...For all of those who can't read in between the lines...The Bears hired an offensive line coach before they hired an O.C. because they intend to hire Mike Martz as O.C.

Martz is not noted for having an offense that gives stellar o-line play...In fact if you take a look at his coaching history...most of his quarterbacks are often injured because of his offensive scheme which consist of 5 and 7 step drops with no fullback or tightend chipping...Hence this is the reason that Tice was hired first...When Tice was O-line coach in Minnesota, the vikings used a lot of 5 & 7 step drops...I don't ever remember seeing one of his quarterbacks carted off on a gurnee...Last but not least...Lovie likes to get off the bus running (stumbling)...With Tice's power man blocking scheme this should be an easier feat than it was last season.

Thank god the new football season is 6 months away. I can't wait for the cubs baseball season.

Southside,

You just made things worse. You spelled ellipse incorrectly.

Southside Cub Fan on January 15, 2010 5:54 PM

Mike,

It is called an elipse. Go look at your old English Grammar book from High School, or did you lend it to Ozzie Guillen?

Ok hire, but unless he can suit up and block himself we still will have big problems. Coaching can improve an o-line but our lack of talent is a concern. We better find at least one tackle and one guard who can start and do a better job than Frank Omiyale and Kevin Shaffer.

And, Tired Bears Fan, You make an outstanding point.

Wonderful! We can now add him to our growing number of terrible head coaches that come to Chicago looking for work because they can not get a job any where else! Just once, I would love to see us get some one at their prime, in stead of cast offs.

Never knew that dot dot dot was essential to proper sentence structuring. Another Cubs fan who tries to put down Sox fans and incriminates himself while attempting to do so.

DE,
I knew you were a Sox Fan; with the poor sentence structure and all... Be that as it may, it is sad that we have to start the baseball wars in January because the Bears are so miserable. In the interim; Go Hawks! Can we agree on that?

DE...
In 1985 the team was being run by Jerry Vanisi and Mike Ditka and was put together by Jim Finks, all of whom were hired by George Halas. Michael McCaskey "woofed" his way to ruining the team and now they have an accountant running the operation... Put 2 + 2 together... Disjointed McCaskey family + accountant = NO MORE SUPER BOWLS! I wish I was wrong, but I don't think I am. If I am, I'll buy the first beer for you at the Victory Parade, for which I will not pre-order the float building materials.

Introducing Lovies Cheap replacement.

COMING SOON!!!!!

this is a stellar addition by the bears. being an offensive line coach is a far cry from a head coach, so tice has something to prove and is considered to be one of the top o-line coaches in the game to boot. the bears offensive line was porous this past season, and it's one of the most crucial area in need of improvement. hiring tice is a piece to a puzzle i'm starting to kind of understand. zen patience, no rash decisions and a coaching staff that can help develop players.

position coaches are highly underrated and to have a coach of tice's quality and experience can guarantee jay cutler ample time next year in a moving pocket. the running game will improve, but there needs to be a second option to matt forte. fred taylor? i'm intrigued by the bears speed. maybe they know something we don't, but we've no choice but to trust and support the team's effort. the coaching situation will work itself out after this next season...

Hire Martz as well, and you'll have four former (or soon to be former) head coaches on one team! Did somebody forget to tell the Bears that too many cooks spoil the broth??

Wow they hired a kine coach before they hired the offensive coordinator. Lovie is already micromanaging a coordinator he hasn't even hired. That said Tice is a good line coach, but what does he have to work with in Chicago? Maybe Tice will take everyone on a boat ride.

Joe why don't you just knock Marten and Louis off your linemen list of the future, and I wouldn't hold your breath on Beekman or Omiyale. Take a look at the type of guys Tice likes on his lines. Now take a look at the guys on the Bears line.

I think Meathead's need a Meathead coach. Seems to me that Jacksonville always had a pretty good O-line so I think this is a good move. Now hire Trapezee and someone to call anything but Garrett Wolfe into the center of the line and the god awfull bubble screen to Hester for -2 yrds.

That's the parade I thought you were building a float for, you are a cub fan afterall. It's kind of a red flag.

Get rid of Smith, and Angelo for 2011. It's too late to do that for 2010.

Southside Cub Fan on January 15, 2010 4:41 PM

DE,
Fortunately the SS Irish parade was cancelled so I don't have to watch north side and suburban idiots travel in buses to puke on my lawn. Don't worry though. I hear there is a parade you may enjoy that travels near Halsted/Broadway in the spring! By then, the McCaskeys may have decided on their coordinators.

MT Bears Fan on January 15, 2010 4:40 PM

This is NOT a bad hire. We'll see what OC ends up being but his O-Line in Minnesota helped them put up 2,500+ rushing yards the year they went to the playoffs. Love the Krenzel comment. New saying is WWCD (what would Craig do).

"According to one of his former players, Jerome Bettis, Cowher has been waiting for the New York Giants job to become available, according to the New York Daily News. Bettis, who also supposedly goes by the nickname The Bus, says that Cowher is pals with the Mara family, which owns the Giants, and he was apparently in line to get the job if current coach Tom Coughlin got canned a few years back but then the team went on that surprising run to a Super Bowl championship."

Looks like Cowher doesn't want to be a Bear even if the job was open

South Side Cub Fan-

1985

Don't you have a float to build for a parade or something?

Southside Cub Fan on January 15, 2010 4:24 PM

Everybody is sure making a big deal about an offensive line coach... Doesn't anybody get it? The Bears will never win a Super Bowl as long as the McCaskey/Halas family owns the team. I would bet that they can't even agree on a "family cell phone plan" let alone how to run an NFL franchise.

Zampezee aint coming to Chicago. Why would he leave a playoff team? So he can coach here for one year and be done? Lovie needs to put his ego aside and just agree to Martz. I dont know why management is even letting him have this much say. He's had all his "own guys" ever since canning Rivera and look how that's turned out. Tice was in over his head in Min. What exactly did he do in JAX that made us run out to get him? If the Bears even THINK they can call offense by committee next year will go down as the worst in the history of the franchise.

Have lived in Jacksonville since 2001, been a Bears fan for 40 years. Tice is a divisive putz. In 2008 Richard Collier, the Jags #3 tackle was shot 14 times, subsquently losing one leg. That offensive line never recovered from that tragedy. Leadership from Del Rio and Tice would have made those young men stronger not weaker dealing with that tragedy.

Del Rio and Lovie are both too expensive to fire and on one year leashes. Only Lane Kiffin has a worst record. Neither team will be good for 3 years when the Bears and the Jags have some real leadership.

The O.C. will be Mike Martz and the QB coach will be Zampeeee-seee. Remember, Martz encouraged the Bears to contact the Zamp. Think about it, folks.

Watch, he'll end up being the OC in 2010.

I actually would have been ok with Tice being the OC. Nice hire IMO. Hopefully they won't drop the ball when it comes to the other hires.

Good Hire! Gotta love the look on the Mike "Meathead" Tice face in the picture! What a doofus! Precious! hahaha

Joe Felicelli on January 15, 2010 4:06 PM

So does this mean that Olin Kreutz is done in Chicago? Tice is a young player's coach, so I would guess that he is being brought in to not only groom Williams and Omiyale, but to make Beekman or a draft pick into the new center. Considering the youth on the roster (Beekman, Louis, Marten, Williams, and to a lesser extent Omiyale), he is going to have a tall task shaping the line of the future in Chicago.

There could be behind the scenes work going on here...Maybe the coordinator is already identified, and he has asked for certain assistants....ok, I can't even type that without laughing. Either way, this is a good hire, and if nothing else, we no longer have to watch Harry Hiestand stare blankly at his line and wonder what to do.
But if they do the "co-coordinator" thing with Tice and Zampese, it will take me weeks to stop swearing.

Yonatan R. on January 15, 2010 4:04 PM

This is good!

SUPER BOWL HERE WE COME! YAY!

not bad

But what does Craig Krenzel say about that?

Tired Bears Fan on January 15, 2010 3:52 PM

Shouldn't the new offensive coach have some say in who coaches the O-line? Tice may be a great choice, but it's pretty dysfunctional, as usual, that this choice be made before the offensive coordinator is chosen. No wonder this team seems in such disarray all the time.

As just an Oline coach, this is a great hire.
