A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Hideki Matsui and the Los Angeles Angels have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract worth about $6.5 million.
The White Sox showed interest in the former Yankee last week but decided to go in a different direction, the Tribune's Dave van Dyck wrote earlier today.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet final. Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, confirmed "serious negotiations" but declined further comment.
Matsui batted .274 with 28 homers and 90 RBIs for the New(York Yankees last season, then was selected World Series MVP despite starting only three of the six games against Philadelphia. He went 8 for 13 (.615) with three homers and eight RBIs, tying a Series record by driving in six runs in Game 6.

Nobody likes a sore winner. Maybe it was the Blatz talking.
You did spell virtually wrong?
O.K. NadaSurf2009, I will pay attention to you. Say, in 2 weeks will you become NadaSurf2010 or will it not change? Anyway, how about the Sox get a lead-off man (Podsednik, Crisp, Pierre or preferrably Brett Gardner) and split the D.H. between Andrew Jones and Mark Kotsay.
So, Jwill is going to call this another of his great calls.
Sorry, he was wrong again.
There WAS a chance that Matsui would play for the Sox.
In a crisis, don't hide behind anything or anybody.
They are going to find you anyway.
