Cutler says hand OK, praises Packers' Woodson

Dan Pompei

In Jay Cutler's weekly media news conference today, he talked about his hand injury and the Packers,  the Bears' opponent, on Sunday. These were the highlights.

• On his hand: "It feels fine. I'll be ready to go on Sunday."

Cutler also said the injury was to his finger and hand, and that he has been getting treatment.

• On if he is a better quarterback now than he was when the Bears played the Packers in the season opener: "It's up for debate maybe. It's been a long year, a lot of ups and downs."

Cutler later said he believes he is better, but he refused to elaborate.

• On the challenge of playing against Packers cornerback Charles Woodson: "He's played for 12 years. He's very smart. I'm sure he watches a lot of film. He reads route concepts really well. If you run the same thing on him twice, it probably won't be very successful. He baits you a little bit. He was good awareness, great football instincts. His athletic ability alone doesn't make him as great as he is. It's his mind and his ability to mess with quarterbacks a little bit."

Cutler also said Woodson is one of the top corners in the league and is playing some of the best football of his career.

• On the difference between preparing for the Packers now and preparing for them prior to the season opener: It was tough that first game with a new defensive coordinator not exactly sure of what they were going to do. There were a lot of unknowns. Now there is a lot more film on them. We're going to get a lot better bead on them."

• On why the Packers have the top-ranked defense in the league: "They are very active. Very good secondary. They have lost a few guys up front and Al [Harris]. But they have been able to replace some people and stay at a high level. They cause a lot of turnovers. That's one of the biggest things they do well. They cause a lot of chaos offensively with their front and their ability to cover guys up in the secondary."

I actually have a lot of respect for Cutler. He takes a lot of the heat for the Bears bad season and doesn't throw anyone under the bus for it. Jay has class! To all of those who don't like him, oh well that's your choice but your reasoning behind it doesn't make sense at all. How can you possibly blame one guy on the team for all the woes? Please, that's just stupid. Put Manning, Brady or Brees on the Bears team right now and you and the media would be bad-mouthing them too. And they have all been on losing teams before too. I think Jay is a very talented young QB who really just wants to win. I hope he sticks it out with the Bears. Besides I'd rather watch Jay play than boring goody-2-shoes Manning any day. Barf.

Hey all you Cutler haters, eat a d.ck losers.

Packers are going to win this Sunday. The Bears only motivation in this game is beating a hot team right now. The Packers motivation is getting the playoffs. This is how it is:

A-Rodg > Cutler
Packers D > Chi D
Packers O > Chi O ( not O -line )
Packers ST Chi RB
Packers coach > Chi Coach ( not by a huge margin)

Fact, is Packers are simple better and will win. But it will be a good game to watch.

To those that say Jay Cutler sucks I would ask you to look at Brett Favre's numbers in s 2005 and 2006. Was it Brett in decline or the team around in? I think Brett has proved that it was the team around him...Cutler can't turn the Bears around by himself.

Wow!!! I don't know what's worse? Dumb fans with terrible facts, or Horrible Scouting and Game Planning by our Coaching Staff? Maybe Angelo's scouting? Jay has made mistakes, we've seen it, but most aren't even his fault, also he's the only thing that gives us a legit threat of a future on offense! I've played QB, on good and bad teams... The FACTS ARE; Turner is terrible calling games, our line/WR need time to gel, both units have used stop-gap pick ups in FA... We as Fans can Support, I WILL til the DAY I Die, but my 12 years straight going to games is prob. Gonna End?! This is Four Years they haven't made the playoffs, reached on drafts, then get a Franchise QB and surround him with ?marks! This organization doesn't care about me/you/winning! I'm sure Lovie/Angelo are good people? But Phillips.... To think We as Fans are blind/idiots and say the team is getting better and the media causes the problems... I Really would like A Team President/Leader that watches the Game! Which Comes back to Supporting, Mr.Phillips, Can You Tell Me Why We As Fans Should Support a Product that is Unsuccessful for Years(4) now and trashes the fans with Expensive Tickets, Small Stadium with too few a bathrooms, and Most important Upper Management finishes us off by acting like WE don't Watch the Games!!! Prove To US Fans Bears Management, then you'll be beloved again... Pick up Top Flight FA, Find the Right Coaches(Frazier,Harbaugh,Bates,Toub?) Quit Reaching on Draft Picks!

Mako, you can look at all the crap QBs and all that would prove is cutlers a monster. My only arguement with saying that was to explain that picks ca diminish as a player grows. People continue to say he sucks but he has yet to be the reason his team is not better. He has lost 2 games this year, and won 3. Matt forte has been invisible and cutler cannot get 2 seconds in the pocket. You can say what you like but the system makes the qb. When they gave peyton what he needed you get the best QB of all time cutler may not be that, but he will be dame good!

Michael Griffin, Cutler is a Pro Bowl QB! Do you really think they hand that to everyone? If so, why don’t the Bear’s have more Pro Bowler’s? Sure he's made mistakes this season, but when you are saddled with sub caliber players and coaches anyone would begin taking bad chances to try and make something happen. They have a load of holes to fill, but not having an O-Line is the most glaring. It doesn't give him a chance to see the open receiver nor does it give Forte a chance to get through a hole. When the lineman is on you before you can drop back or the receiver turns there is a huge problem! Some folks really need to learn your football!

Jay cutler has the tools, the brains, and if he gets the right personnel a great chance at being great. look at Peyton Manning's early years. He threw 28 picks his rookie year and 23 his fourth. You have to get used to everything before you can truly be great. Like ocho cinco would say CHILD PLEASE to all you CUTLER haters. Get off espns dick!

Thank you John Tanner.

I work at Vandy. Jay took Vandy into UT and beat UT at their home stadium. Vandy had not beat UT at home since 1974 and it was 1982 the last time Vandy beat UT.

At Florida. Jay took Vandy to the then ranked #4 in the Nation at Florida and took them to Double OT! Vandy got screwed on a call or we would have won. Vandy had not beaten Florida since 1948!

Jay in High School only lost 1 game!

You can't look at Jay's record at Vandy or the Pro's and say he is not a winner. That is crap. He needs weapons around him, a running game, an offensive line and a receiver over 6 feet tall that will go up and get a ball! Then Jay can fully use his talents!

Ben miller on December 9, 2009 1:42 PM

Jay cutler was a winner in high school and vandy was the best its been since 1927. Jay cutler is extremely intelligent, look at the qbs last year who had more attempts then him. Only one and drew brees threw 17 while cut threw 18. His recievers lack skills and his oline sucks. If you ever watch a game and not just highlights you would know this. He also has 8deflected picks. 6 hit recievers hands first. The more the ball is thrown the more crazy things can happen. Ron turner has also complained about route running and taken some heat of cutler. Devin hester is fast, but not all there in the head. Cutler has been bad in the redZone but hopefully he improves.

Michael Griffin on December 9, 2009 1:35 PM

Waku Up,
Jay Cutler's high school team won state. Try studying facts before you comment. Furthermore, was Barry Sanders a crappy runningback? I mean, if we follow your logic he was terrible because his teams were terrible. Idiot.

Little Laura on December 9, 2009 1:25 PM

He knows how to use the tools. He needs the project to use them in. The Bears system is not giving him the job blueprint he needs to succeed. Especially if he's running for his life on every play. That shouldn't be happening. And other players shouldn't be bad-mouthing teammates - that's unprofessional and unsportsmanlike. The system has to change - starting with real support from coaches and confidence in their players.
