Fire down to two finalists for coaching job

The Fire has narrowed its list of coaching candidates to succeed the fired Denis Hamlett to two: former D.C. United coach Tom Soehn and longtime Fire midfielder Jesse Marsch, Soccer America reports.

Both have strong ties to the Fire. Soehn and Marsch were players on the 1998 MLS Cup-winning team and Soehn began his coaching career as an assistant for the Fire under Bob Bradley. Marsch played 231 MLS games in midfield for the Fire before being traded to Chivas USA prior to the 2006 season for a first-round draft pick.
Despite a winning record in league play over the last three seasons (36-30-24), Soehn, 43, made the playoffs only once, crashing out to the Fire in 2007. United won a U.S. Open Cup trophy last season, but fell short in international competitions in all three seasons. His contract was not renewed by D.C.

Interviewing for the Fire job may signal an end to Marsch's playing career at age 36. He is one of four remaining MLS original players and has been among the league leaders in minutes played in most of his seasons. He reached 2 finals with the Fire and won three U.S. Open Cups. He appeared in 25 games for Chivas last season and was fifth in minutes-played for the team despite missing several games with a broken jaw.
