New Akron coach Rob Ianello officially imported one fellow ex-Notre Dame assistant to his new staff on Monday. And he won't stop there.
Former Irish great and NFL Pro Bowler Bryant Young is expected to join Akron's staff as defensive line coach, a source told the Tribune on Monday, departing Notre Dame after one season as a defensive graduate assistant.
Young had an offer from new Irish coach Brian Kelly to remain in that graduate assistant role, but also had the offer to join Ianello to mull. Apparently Young indeed will take the staff member job with Ianello, a move that likely will rankle Notre Dame fans who viewed Young as an up-and-coming coaching prospect.
This after Akron officially announced ex-Irish offensive line coach John Latina as offensive coordinator on Monday in a widely anticipated move. A source told the Tribune last week that Ianello also is eyeing ex-Irish quarterbacks coach Ron Powlus for a staff position.
Latina coached the Notre Dame line from 2005 to 2008.
"John is an excellent teacher and understands the big picture of offensive football," Ianello said in a statement. "The success he has had during his previous stops speaks for itself. He has a proven record of producing top-flight offense and developing players."
