Ex-Chicago players popular at winter meetings

INDIANAPOLIS -- News, notes and rumors on ex-Chicago players as baseball's annual winter meetings officially begin today:

*Baltimore GM Andy MacPhail has interest in Kevin Gregg and Rich Harden, which comes as no surprise to those who have been following the former Cub president since his departure. Baltimore took Sammy Sosa off Jim Hendry's hands before Mac Phail got there, then MacPhail took Felix Pie, Corey Patterson and Rich Hill from the Cubs.  But MacPhail won't do the same with Milton Bradley.

Harden likely will end up in Seattle, near his Canadian roots.

*Former White Sox reliever Mike MacDougal is arbitration eligible in Washington, so he might be let go on Saturday, which is the date for tendering contracts. MacDougal was the  Nationals closer but may not be worth the price.
*Former Cub Mark DeRosa is a hot property as teams fill in with extra pieces. But even the Cardinals are balking at bringing him back at the asking price: three years, $24 million. DeRosa must let the Cardinals know by Tuesday whether he will accept their offer of arbitration or become a complete free agent.

Teams also interested in DeRosa are the Braves, Yankees, Reds Sox and, perhaps, Orloles. He said he would like to play for a contender, and Boston makes plenty of sense if he doesn't return to St. Louis.

*Former Cubs and White Sox pitcher Jon Garland is drawing one-year interest from several teams, including the Brewers.

*The Dodgers believe they can trade Juan Pierre, despite his two years and $18.5 million. Ditto for the Angels and the three-year, $54 million left on Gary Matthews Jr.'s contract.

MacFail would be interested in Gregg and Harden because he's a moron..

$8 million annual for a 35 year old Mark DeRosa coming off a horrible injury plagued year????

For THREE YEARS!!!

Are they insane!!!!!

In fact, Matthews' entire contract was $55 million over 5 years. I know there are some bad contracts, but $18 million a season for Gary Matthews, Jr.? That should have caused anyone to pause while writing that! And it's been over an hour since it was pointed out, and still no change. Gotta love the Trib. From Dewey Defeats Truman, to this!

Matthews has two years and $23.8 million left.
