El Salvador coach could be Fire candidate

The Fire's search for a new coach may be extending outside of the United States.

Published reports on a Mexican news site linked recent El Salvador coach Carlos de los Cobos to the Fire. He announced last week that he would step down after El Salvador failed to qualify for the World Cup.

De los Cobos, 51, has managed teams in the Mexican first and second divisions and led El Salvador, long a CONCACAF also-ran, back to the final round of World Cup qualifying for first time since 1997. After a shocking 2-1 home victory over Mexico in June gave the team hope of reaching South Africa, "La Selecta" lost five of its last six and slumped out of contention.
In leaving the El Salvador post, de los Cobos told the Record that he preferred club management, though he had also been approached by a Central American country. He declined to name either the club or country he had interviewed with.

"There is a lot of thoughtfulness in this negotiation and I want to respect the contact with them," he said. "The management has asked me out of respect, and because my contract with El Salvador is valid, that I not mention the name of the team yet. But all is going very well and next week we could have news and reach a good agreement."
