USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has been elected chairman of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Board. The Hall said today that Colangelo, a Chicago Heights native, will begin serving a two-year term immediately, replacing Mannie Jackson.
John Doleva, president and CEO of the Hall, called Colangelo "a dominating figure in the history of the game as evidenced by his election to the Hall as a contributor in 2004."
Colangelo was the longtime owner of the Phoenix Suns and is a former chairman of the NBA's Board of Governors. He was chosen as managing director of USA Basketball in 2005, building the team that won the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics, and later became chairman.
