Give some credit to Lance Briggs.
He had a chance to blame some of the Bears' problems, especially for the struggling defense, on the absence of teammate Brian Urlacher for all but two quarters this season, but he passed.
"Did we go to the playoffs last year?" Briggs said, pointing out that the Bears have not played well with and without the captain and former defensive player of the year.
Scouts say that Urlacher's absence has been most felt in pass defense. His athleticism and size create problems for quarterbacks when he drops in coverage. But Briggs isn't buying the idea that not having Urlacher is why the Bears are 5-8 heading into Sunday's game at Baltimore.
"I think that with Brian, here you do have a leader who has been a vocal leader for us, and I think with him here the accountability factor comes into play a lot more," Briggs said. "His voice is definitely missed in the locker room, actually more so on the field than in the locker room. His voice is definitely missed. And having him back next year is going to be a big boost for our team."
What does Briggs mean by the accountability factor?
"I just know that if I screw up and Brian is on the field, I know where the yelling and the cussing is going to come from first. You know?" Briggs said. "And then, you know, when we're on the sidelines and we sit down, he is going to say, 'I only say that because I love you.' That's the kind of guy he is, that is the kind of football player he is and we all expect that. "We even talked about that at the beginning of the year, when players screw up or we miss an assignment or we do something wrong, and we know it's us, and somebody asks who did it and we look around in that huddle and I'm like, 'Guys, it was me. That was me.' Brian is there and he is going to tell you about it and so there won't be any question, let's get back and let's play ball."
