Briggs laying low at end of rough season

By Brad Biggs

Lance Briggs isn't picking up his cell phone all the time these days.

It can be hard talking about a 5-9 season, and as the losses have piled up, he's turned inward to a degree.

"Actually I haven't had a text in a long time,'' Briggs said. "I just had one that says, `Oh, you guys have got a lot of injuries. That sucks.' It was actually a pretty good comment. They could have asked what's going on with you, why are you guys so bad? You guys stink.

"I kind of don't answer my cell phones sometimes at this time of year, with this many losses. Yeah. That's where I stand on that. Next question.''

Briggs was asked about the struggles of the team in the first quarter this season. The Bears have been outscored 93-30 in the quarter--opponents have scored even more points in the second quarter (105)--and the defense has allowed seven opponents to score on their first drive.

"I think we have difficulty in a lot of quarters this year,'' Briggs said. "So you want to pick out the first quarter or which of the second quarters or the third quarters? Right now, I guess we could start with the first quarter, but let's put all four quarters together, and we have eight of them left, so we need to put eight good quarters of football together."

Briggs also addressed what are perceived to be recent struggles by Brett Favre in Minnesota this month.

"I think January is a much more important month than December, especially when you're sitting atop the division," he said. "I think the guy has proven himself in many years. It makes for good speculation, it makes for good conversation. But that's about it."
