Biggs: Penalties a persistent plague for Bears

If there is a consistent theme to Ron Turner's news conferences -- on Wednesdays or after games -- it's that the Bears are perpetually serving as their own worst enemy, short-circuiting drives with a host of errors and mistakes.

Penalties are a big part of that. Six of the team's season-high 13 penalties in Sunday's loss to the Packers were on the offensive line. Four of them were false starts, a surprising figure for a home game.

The Bears have been called for 22 false starts this season, which ties for the second-most in the NFL. Offensive tackle Chris Williams leads the team with five of the false starts, and the right tackle-turned-left tackle has a team-high eight penalties.
The Bears have 91 penalties, sixth-most in the league, for 761 yards. Averaging seven penalties per game, they are on pace for 112, which would tie for the second-most in the Lovie Smith era. They are on pace to have 937 penalty yards, which also would be the second-most under Smith. The team had 124 penalties for 956 yards in 2004.

The offensive line is responsible for 27 of the 91 penalties (29.7 percent).

Here is a look at how the Bears' penalties break down through 13 games:

Penalties by players

Chris Williams, 8 penalties, 65 yards (5 false starts, 1 unnecessary roughness, 1 facemask, 1 illegal use of hands to the face)
