As the Bears' long snapper, Patrick Mannelly is supposed to leave the kicking to Robbie Gould and Brad Maynard. But Mannelly decided to put his foot to work against the Packers last Sunday.
The special teams captain was fined $10,000 for unnecessarily kicking an opponent, according to a league source. Mannelly was on the ground following an extra point that brought the Bears within 13-7 when his violation occurred, and he was flagged with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty.
Of the three Bears fined for their actions against the Packers, Mannelly got the stiffest penalty. Tommie Harris received a $5,000 fine for striking Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers near his knee, while left tackle Chris Williams was fined $7,500 for a major facemask against Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews.
Both Harris and Williams plan to appeal their fines. It's unclear if Mannelly will do the same.
Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly was fined $7,500 for a major facemask penalty against Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
Bears safety Al Afalava did not get fined for an unnecessary roughness penalty.
