Bears likely to stay put at safety against Packers

The Bears changed up the secondary last Sunday against the Rams, with Kevin Payne starting at strong safety, Al Afalava at free safety and Danieal Manning exclusively at nickel back.

It appears the alignment will stay the same against the Packers, although quarterback Aaron Rodgers is sure to go down the field a lot more than Rams quarterback Kyle Boller did.

"We won, didn't we?" secondary coach Jon Hoke said of the Payne-Afalava experiment.

So that means the safeties will remain as is, right?

"Well, yeah," Hoke said. "Everybody gets reps back there, so everybody's going to have an opportunity to play. But (Payne and Afalava) did a good job. They communicated well and all those types of things."

Payne actually started at free safety and Afalava at strong in the season-opener at Green Bay. And Payne actually lost his starting job after Rodgers hit Greg Jennings for the game-winning, 50-yard touchdown in the Packers' 21-15 victory.
