Tuesday is game-plan day in the NFL, and that means Bears coach Lovie Smith and his staff are considering the important decisions they have to make in preparation for their Sunday game against the Packers.
This week, Smith could have four interesting personnel decisions.
1. Should he move Chris Williams back to right tackle if Orlando Pace is ready to return from a groin injury?
He might believe doing so would give the Bears the best chance to beat the Packers, but there is no question keeping Williams on the left side is best for the long-term interests of the team. And at this point, the long-term interests of the team should take priority over the short term.
2. Should Jamar Williams stay on the field even if Lance Briggs returns from injury?
For Williams to continue to play, he would have to take away snaps from Nick Roach at strong-side linebacker. Roach has not done anything to lose playing time. This is a tough call. It might not be a bad idea to split reps and see how each player fares.
3. How should he align his safeties?
Last week he put Al Afalava at free safety and Kevin Payne at strong safety and got outstanding results. He could move Afalava back to strong and re-insert Danieal Manning at free.
Or he could keep Payne at strong and bench Manning. Given how Afalava and Payne played against the Rams, it makes sense to keep the status quo.
4. Should he make both Jarron Gilbert and Gaines Adams active?
It has been one or the other up to this point, and neither has gotten much playing time. Both could benefit from a more extensive look, and the Bears' offseason plan would benefit from getting both on the field as well.
